KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
We lucked out with the weather for the Fun Run on Monday to kick off our week! It was a lot of fun watching our students and families come together to enjoy the sunshine, fresh air, and celebrate the successful fundraising! Since the overall school goal was met, the grade levels EACH got to paint a staff member! The Wednesday painting time during recess was enjoyed by the students - and the staff enjoyed being their canvasses.
Next week is another fun one on our campus! Please make sure to click the form in the section below to RSVP for the Thanksgiving Feasts. Payments will be collected ONLY via MySchoolBucks accounts so it’s important that you make sure those accounts are loaded with proper funds for each meal. Adult/guest meals are $6 and Northwood student meals are $2.85. It is vital that we capture your RSVPs by this evening so the cafeteria staff can properly prepare the right amount of food for the event days.
It is also time for the Northwood Book Fair! The Fair will be open during the feasts, and classrooms will also get time to visit/shop with their homerooms. Stop by the Media Center to check out all the fun selections!
If the weather arrives as predicted, next Monday and Tuesday will be chilly! Make sure to send students with jackets/layers.
With Tuesday being Veterans Day, please plan to wear red, white, and blue to honor all those that have and currently serve our country!
With gratitude,
Heather Q. Rucker, principal
SECOND GRADE EXPLORERS
October was an outstanding month in Second Grade! The highlight of the month was definitely Pumpkin Math. Students measured the height, weight, and circumference of the pumpkins; counted the seeds; and carved them. The children had so much fun working together and having parent volunteers come in. We are looking forward to seeing how long it takes the deer to eat the pumpkins we threw over the fence. Everyone had a great time at the Fun Run as well. We are so proud of all the donations students collected to help support our school!
THIRD GRADE EXPLORERS
October 31 was not only the Book Character Parade ... it was also Cranium Challenge Day! The students completed various brain-boosting puzzles, challenges, and art crafts throughout the day, such as building a broom out of candies and designing a costume for the Bad Seed character. Cranium Challenge Day is a fun and engaging event designed to spark creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking among students.
BOOSTERTHON FUN RUN WRAP UP
Thank you for your support in making this year's Boosterthon Fun Run a huge success! We appreciate everyone's flexibility in moving the event to our rain date. This year Northwood Elementary School exceeded our goal, raising more than $50,500 to go towards School Wide Enhancements! We are always excited when registrations and donations remain at a high level; and appreciate that so many students are engaged and involved.
A special thank you to all our volunteers and to our Northwood Foundation Members - Faisal Siddiqui, Loren Akin, Sue Ellen Brown, Regan Russo, Katherine Heyen, Megan Larkins, Nicole Elstad and Principal Rucker. We appreciate all of your hard work!
PBIS CELEBRATION - OCTOBER
PBIS Glow Party Celebration! Our PBIS celebration for the month of October was one to remember! Students in grades K–5 who met PBIS expectations were invited to a glowing good time in the gym. The lights were dimmed, black lights were shining, and the room came alive with glowing bracelets, twirling glow sticks, and games that lit up the dark — from Gaga Ball and Connect Four to Tetris and more!
As a special bonus, the celebration took place on October 31st, so students were also dressed in their favorite book character costumes, making the event extra fun and festive. The gym truly felt like another world, and our students enjoyed every minute of this bright and joyful celebration of positive behavior!
THANKSGIVING FEAST: SECURE YOUR SEAT

HERE TODAY, READY FOR TOMORROW: ATTENDANCE PRIORITIES AT NORTHWOOD
Our attendance focus this school year is “Strive for 95!” We want our Explorers to be present for 95% of our school days. Excellent attendance ensures the best delivery of excellent instruction. Through the end of October, 76.2% of our Explorers have achieved that standard!
We understand that some absences are unavoidable. If your Explorer is absent from school, please email northwoodattendance@fultonschools.org to notify the proper staff.
Did you know that students can request up to 5 Participate Remote Learning Days per semester and receive attendance credit by completing academic work remotely? Parents can submit this form to their child’s teacher prior to an expected absence.
Your involvement as parents and guardians is an essential factor in creating a positive and engaging school environment. Together, we can foster an atmosphere where students are excited to come to school, engage in learning, and build a foundation for a successful future.
Click here to learn more at Northwood’s Attendance Webpage. In addition, FCS attendance policy information can be found at FCS Attendance Matters Website or by contacting our school social worker, Patrick Hartigan, MSW at hartigan@fultonschools.org

AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week’s AVID goal is: My goal is to be positive and have a growth mindset.
CAFETERIA NEWS
FROM FCS: SNAP FAMILIES MAY QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCED-PRICE SCHOOL MEALS
If a household is experiencing food insecurity due to the government shutdown or changes to SNAP benefits, please remember that families may qualify for Free or Reduced-Price School Meals. Families may qualify in several ways:
- If you receive SNAP or TANF, your child automatically qualifies for free meals, but you must apply.
- You may also qualify based on household income, check the eligibility chart online, but you must apply.
- Applications are quick, confidential, and most are processed within just a few days.
NEW CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
This year, with the new lunch system, our school community has the capability to create a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account would be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!
Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Ms. Juana Moore, our regional supervisor and interim cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Ms. Moore, moorejr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
