Kindergarten News for October
September's Highlights
Kindergarten students enjoyed Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Day, Teddy Bear Day, and Superhero Day. They started science, took a nature walk, and learned about living versus nonliving. We began Social-Emotional lessons with the counselor and checked out books at the library.
Counselor News
In September, Ms. Andersen started her weekly counselor lessons in each class, that will continue all year!
Music
In Mrs. Luna's music classes we will be working on singing new songs beautifully, keeping the steady beat, and learning about slow and fast tempi!
Media
Kindergarten has now been to the library and are checking out two books. We provided a bag for the library books to stay in the child's backpack to help keep them safe.
STEM Identities
Classrooms shared one activity that they did this month that showed they were STEM students.
Mrs. Barnes: We were STEM students during our living vs. nonliving sorting activity when we discussed if each object could eat, grow, and breathe; then classified it as nonliving or living.
Mrs. Garcia: We were STEM students during our nature walk by learning how scientists observe and record the information they find.
Ms. Jechorek: We were STEM students on our nature walk when we used our science toolkits (sense of sight, smell, hearing, touch) to identify living and nonliving things that we observed.
Mrs. Lewis: We were STEM students during our nature hike when we observed nature and recorded what we saw just like a scientist does!

STEM at Home
One of the big ideas that kindergartners will be working on in their STEM unit is looking closely at plants and animals to notice how different kinds live in different places.
So here are some things you can do at home...
Compare two spots:
- Look at the grass in the yard and then by the flowers. Do you see the same or different organisms?
- Which spot has more things living in it? Why do you think so?
Inside vs. outside:
- Ask: We see spiders or ants inside sometimes—what do they need that makes them come inside? What do you notice is different about the living things inside our house and outside in the garden?
Use Pictures or Books
Show pictures of a desert, forest, and ocean. Ask:
-
“Which animals could live in each place?”
-
“What do you see that helps them live there?
-
