Take a look at our online calendars to stay up to date with what's going on at Science Hill:
Club Hub
One of Science Hill's largest clubs, Appreciation for Women in STEM (AWSTEM), is only a year old, but has doubled in size since its founding. Co-presidents Lauren Yobst and Lacy Leita said they recognized the need for the group when they noticed gender discrepancies in their science classes, where there were often more boys than girls.
Lauren and Lacy said the club is a place where women can explore their interests in science. At a recent meeting in September, guest speaker Andi Heimer, a piping engineer working at Eastman, spoke to club members about the work she does and how her path in life led her to her career. The club's Instagram account features a video takeover each month by a woman working in a science-based job who shares info about her work.
On October 2, the club will host a STEM night for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at Cherokee and South Side elementary schools from 5 to 7 pm in Grand Topper Hall. The event, in partnership with A/V Production, HOSA, Robotics and TAPS, will include hands-on science experiments, an organ tour, talks with engineers, prizes and food!
Students can join any of the dozens of active clubs at Science Hill. Participation in an extracurricular activity can help a student's well-being, improve academic performance and create relationships that last a lifetime! Find the right club for you on the list of clubs on Science Hill's website and get involved.
AWSTEM co-president Lacy Leita says she wants the club to be a place where students are encouraged to explore science.
Homecoming 2024
Homecoming Week was a hit! Students and faculty dressed for success all Spirit Week, a new Homecoming Court was crowned, the Toppers won their game against Union High School 31-7, and then students strutted their stuff at the Homecoming Dance!

FYI
Tutoring
Is a hypotenuse part of a triangle or a brain? Maybe that's a hypothalamus? Are you hypothesizing about ways to boost your grades? Come to tutoring and you can unlock the secrets to academic success. And that's no hyperbole.
Geometry Tutoring is available every morning from 7:15 to 7:35 in Room A215 or A219. In the afternoon, you can attend tutoring sessions from 2:45 to 4 in Room A218 on Monday, Room A215 on Tuesday, Room A208 on Thursday or Room A221 on Friday. Please show up by 3 for afternoon tutoring.
Biology Tutoring is available Tuesday and Thursday at 7 each morning and from 3 to 4 each afternoon in Room 413.
Take the ASVAB
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a career assessment that will be administered at SHHS on September 26. There is no cost for this exam and is available to any junior or senior. It is one of the best career assessments on the market, and it is not just for students planning to enlist in the Armed Forces. It is intended for any student that would like to explore career options that are best suited for them.
Students can register for the ASVAB with this online form. For more information, watch this video or contact Josh Jarnigan in the CTE Main Office and at jarniganj@jcschools.org.
PTSA Corner
During the September Board of Education meeting, board members passed a resolution proclaiming September and October as PTA Membership Enrollment Months in Johnson City. With this resolution, the board encourages all concerned and interested citizens to join a local PTA unit.
Science Hill's Parent Teacher Student Association organizes several events each year, most recently, the Homecoming Dance. You can support Science Hill's PTSA by visiting https://sciencehill.givebacks.com/store and clicking "Memberships" in the navigation menu.
