What another busy week in first grade! Thank you so much for all the grocery items you sent in to help us for our economic Social Studies event. Please continue to have your child read out loud to you every night- and please keep practicing the rainbow words! Have a wonderful weekend enjoying the warm weather!

Ms. Hartness & Ms. Vicky

This week:

  • Math- We continued our chapter on measurement. Ask your child about the size of Jeison Orlando Rodriguez Hernandez’s foot and what objects were used to measure this record holder.

  • Reading/Phonics- In reading we studied the letter y and the different sounds it makes in words (yes, fly, happy). In phonics we practiced rhyme recognition, onset fluency, blending phonemes, isolating final or medial sounds, segmenting phonemes, deleting final phonemes or rimes, and substituting final phonemes.

  • Writing- We wrote opinions about Ms. Vicky’s duck collection.

  • Social Studies- We continued our study on economics: needs & wants and goods & services.

Next week:

  • Math- We continue Unit 6 on measurement. We will use centimeter cubes to measure the lengths of assorted animals. We will also solve story problems about measurement.

  • Reading/Phonics- We will continue reading and practicing the vowel teams, digraphs, and glued sounds we’ve learned. In phonics we will practice rhyme recognition, onset fluency, blending phonemes, isolating final or medial sounds, segmenting phonemes, deleting final phonemes or rimes, and substituting final phonemes.

  • Writing- We will begin to write reviews about our favorite restaurants.

  • Social Studies- We will continue our study on economics: needs & wants and goods & services. Our shopping event with Ms. Stowe will begin for one homeroom class a week from today and the other homeroom that following Monday.

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful week! Our students are eagerly learning about the life cycle of plants and what they need to grow. They also discover the functions of the different parts of a plant.

Have a nice weekend!

This week:

Reading: Students continued identifying words in a story that conveyed emotions or made them think, feel, or remember things. For example, "purple" might have reminded them of grapes, and "green" might have made them feel calm.

Writing: The students continued giving and receiving feedback from their peers to extend and add details to their writing.

Language: We continued asking and answering questions about books and stories.

Math: The students measured length by iterating the same-size length units without gaps or overlaps.

Science: The students learned the parts of a plant and their functions.

Next week:

Reading: Students will use pictures and details in a story to describe key story elements.

Writing: With guidance and support, students will focus on a topic, respond to peer and teacher feedback, and add details to strengthen their writing. They will also begin giving compliments to their peers.
Language: We will continue asking and answering questions about books and stories.
Math: Students will measure length and determine an efficient way to count the number of length units up to 120.
Science: The Students will learn about the life cycle of plants.
