Eagle NewsSME newsletter for families and the community

Dear SME Families,

I hope this message finds you well. I just want to remind you that assignments for the snow day are due. Please make sure to ask your student if they are turned in so they are not counted absent.

Because technology is a part of every classroom, questions often arise about screentime, digital literacy, and personalized learning on the computer.

At Six Mile Elementary, we are teaching students how to use technology to enhance their learning, communicate effectively, and access information. We are also focusing on building awareness of online safety, ethical behavior, and the importance of balancing screen time with other activities. These skills are crucial as they prepare our students for an increasingly digital future.

We encourage you to engage with your child about their digital experiences and model positive online behavior at home. Computers are great tools, but we want to also keep our students safe while they are using them. Together, we can ensure that they are equipped to thrive in the digital world while remaining safe and respectful online citizens.

Recently, iReady scores were sent home from Winter testing. With this assessment, students are able to access personalized pathways for learning in reading and math. When they log in the the iReady format on their computer, they are exposed to teaching and practice that is aligned with their personal strengths and weaknesses.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us nurture well-rounded, responsible learners. If you have any questions or would like resources on digital literacy, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,
Melissa Terry
Principal

Building Character at SME

Each month at Six Mile Elementary, we focus on different character traits and talk about ways to show those traits to others. We discuss the trait in morning meeting in our classrooms. We spotlight the trait on the school news show. Mrs. Orr, our guidance counselor, goes into classrooms and does special lessons with the trait. At the end of each month, we have a Best of the Nest party to honor those students who "shine" in that area.

In December, our core essential character trait is RESILIENCE.

RESILIENCE is getting back up when something gets you down.

Absence Notes

If your student is absent, you have three days to send a note stating the reason for their absence before it is counted unexcused. You can send a handwritten note or you can email Stephanie Merck at stephaniemerck@pickens.k12.sc.us. You can also email your child's teacher.

When students have accumulated 3 absences in a row without a note, Mrs. Plyler will have to schedule a meeting for an Attendance Conference. Please make sure to get your note in so that this does not happen.
