Welcome toFAST!Family Academic Support Team

What is the Purpose of FAST?

To assist students and families with active engagement at TXVA, a Family Academic Support Team (FAST) will be utilized to provide support to families. While a child’s education should always come first, at times life circumstances can get in the way. FAST empowers students and families to overcome challenges they may be facing so that they can experience success in school and beyond. This holistic approach includes early intervention, support services, and linking families to school and community-based resources. FAST members and teachers work with families to provide the extra help needed to enable students to remain motivated and on track.

There are 4 main components that make up FAST and each provide unique and valuable resources to families and students. See each below.

Roles in the Family Academic Support Team: Roles in the Family Academic Support Team:

Family Compliance Liaison

My name is Shelby Martin. I have been with K12 for over 4 years now. I have worked my way up from being a contractor to Truancy Supervisor/Compliance Manager. I manage the team that works on attendance and helping students who withdraw from our school continue their education. After being hired by K12, from contractor to Registrar, I found that I specialized in helping students who want to drop out of school. I loved listening to students’ stories and doing everything I can to help them find alternate education routes. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for almost 9 years now. We have 3 wonderful boys ages 6, 8, and 9. I enjoy helping families and always ensure they get the help they need. Staying in touch and quick responses are principles that I keep at all times.

Family Resource Coordinator

Hello there! I am Sara Perez, and this is my 2nd year with the FAST team as the Family Resource Coordinator (FRC). As the FRC I offer extra support to the students and families during the school year. I assist with locating resources in regards to: financial hardship, homelessness, major medical concerns, mental health services and much more. I also hold groups throughout the year for the students. Some of the popular topics have included grief, bullying, self-esteem, motivation, teen pregnancy and teen parenting. I am a licensed social worker and have worked with many different populations and communities over the last 13 years. I started my career working with the homeless and this is where I discovered my passion for working with families! I am an eternal optimist and believe every family has the potential to succeed here at TXVA!

This is my 6th year working for K12. I began as a 3rd-5th grade social studies teacher, then moved into HS advising. For the past 3 years I have worked as our family engagement coordinator, planning our outreach opportunities for our hard working families. I also have 2 boys ages 18 and 11; and a 6 year old daughter. I LOVE my job! I have spent the past 15 years working in various avenues of education but my K12 job by far is my very favorite of all. I have the joy of working with our amazing teachers and administration in planning outreach for the state of Texas. I am humbled each day by the stories of our families that have triumphed over adversity due to their learning coaches relentless efforts and dedication of our determined staff.

First of all, thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself and position here at Texas Virtual.

My name is Nidia Ampadu, I live in Brownsville, Texas. I have been married to my husband for almost 15 years, with 2 lovely children a 13-year-old son and a happy 6-year-old daughter. Their happiness and education mean the world to me. I enjoy the beach and being involved in my children’s day to day extra activities.

In 2015, I had the privilege to work with the wonderful FAST Team. I first started as an Attendance Specialist and allowed me to work closely with the TXVA families. When given the opportunity I join the Family Academic Support Liaison team. I am very proud of working in a team where I have learned the value of teamwork and the commitment the FASLs have in putting our Student First.

I look forward to getting know and in working side by side with you this year while having one goal in mind “our student’s success.”

High School Lead Family Academic Support Lisiason

I am a Family Academic Support Liaison Lead for the HS team.

I've chosen to work with HS students because you have the power! You are innovative, knowledgeable, capable, skilled, and you go after your dreams. I learn from you.

Also, I've chosen to become a part of the FAST team, specifically, because I like working one-on-one with students to help them achieve academically. Because I know that sometimes, with just a little guidance, you can push through and get it done. I hope that if you ever have to work with the FAST team you feel encouraged because now you have another person in your corner; cheering for you to succeed. And because we are the best team in the HS, HEEHEEHEE! (Okay, fine, we're ALL awesome!) If you ever feel overwhelmed and you feel like you have a mountain in front of you. Ask yourself this- How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Stay positive, stay focused, and when it gets hard remember to take one day at a time, and you will be successful. You can do it!

High School Family Academic Support Liaison

My name is Misti Hernandez and I am a FASL for TXVA. FASL stands for Family Academic Support Liaison and I am here to provide non-academic support to our students and Learning Coaches while schooling virtually. My goal as a FASL is to fully engage each child to ensure student achievement and success. I currently reside in Euless, TX with my 2 beautiful Daughters Miranda - 19 and Hayli – 16; my two dogs and one cat.

My career started in the Healthcare field in 2004 as a Nurse Tech. In 2008 I decided to go back to school not knowing a year later I would be changing my career path once again. If I am not at work, I enjoy being outside, whether I am Kayaking, fishing or spending time with both of my daughters.

In 2011, I started working for K12 at Texas Virtual Academy for 2 years. In 2014, I was given the opportunity to open another school in the State of Texas for k12 which was very challenging, but I accomplished it. In 2015, I was offered a position on the FAST Team. And here I am ...I am HERE to help you become Engaged, keep you Encouraged, and Empower you to become a Successful Student with TXVA!

Referral Process Tier System Referral Process Tier System

Everything you need to know about being referred:

If Assigned to a FCL:

FCL will contact you and assist you with any attendance concerns or issues you have.

If Assigned to a FRC:

FRC will reach out to you via phone and email to learn how our team can be of support to you.

If Assigned to a FASL:

  • Student is placed into Tier II
  • Student, learning coach (LC), & FASL will meet online to create a Back on Track plan
  • Student, LC & FASL will meet weekly online to review progress/tackle any issues
  • Lasts minimum of three weeks
  • If family does not participate in this process, case will be escalated to Tier III and/or IV

Everything you need to know about Tier II-

When a teacher refers a student to the FAST Team, the student is assigned to a Family Academic Support Liaison (FASL), Family Compliance Liaison (FCL), and/or the Family Resource Coordinator (FRC). Students may be referred to multiple people simultaneously. Whomever is assigned will listen to the needs of the student/family and create an individualized plan to address their unique situation and help the student be successful at TXVA.

Everything you need to know about Tier III:

Most things stay the same in Tier III. You’ll continue to have weekly meetings if you’ve been assigned to a FASL and will have ongoing support from any other FAST team member(s) assigned to you. The main difference is that students now meet with their FASL 2 times a week instead of just 1 time. Our hope is always that we can work together to help every student be actively engaged in school consistently.

Everything you need to know about Tier IV:

At Tier IV, the student and learning coach have received all available resources and interventions. Unfortunately, the family has continued to be non-compliant and disengaged and the possibility of withdrawal has been communicated. A meeting with the family and school administration will be held to determine an alternative course of action for the student / learning coach’s success. During the meeting with school administration the following may occur:

  • Due to continued lack of engagement in our school a conversation about if this virtual environment is the best learning place for the student.
  • School administration may give student another chance to show they are truly ready to be engaged fully.

How to Be Successful:

Let us hear from you, attend meetings, and share your concerns/struggles/successes with us. We’re so glad you’re at TXVA and that we have the opportunity to work together and get to know one another!

Remember, TXVA students do not use the Online School (OLS) Plan Tab or the Lesson Short Cuts on their home page.

Instead all lessons a student needs to complete each week are located in the Course Content Calendar emailed to you each month. It is a PDF document that you must open and use.

Checking Grades and Missing Assignments Checking Grades and Missing Assignments

zoom_out_map

Checking Grades in Engrade

You can access your gradebook via the "Gradebook" link in the Quick Links menu in the OLS. The Engrade gradebook will open in a new window. (Note: you must have pop-ups enabled to view the gradebook.) When the gradebook window opens you will see the list of your classes including the following information: class name, teacher name, letter grade to date and percentage grade to date. Clicking on that class name will display all of your grades for that class in the score column (e.g. 5.0/5, 80/100, E, M). Typically OLS assignments will be listed first followed. As you scroll down the page you will then see Work Samples, and when applicable interim assessments.

A "-" in the score column means that the lesson has not been assigned yet and no score is available. If an "E" is entered, that assignment has been excused by the teacher. The "E" is treated as if the assignment didn't exist for the student and does not help or hurt an overall grade. If a "0" is entered the student attempted the assignment, but earned no points for that assignment. The "0" will be averaged into their overall grade.

As mentioned above, Work Samples (Exit Tickets) are found below all of the OLS assignments. You may see the same "M", "E", "-", or "0" values entered in this section and each has the same meaning as in the OLS Assignments section of the gradebook. It important to understand that an "M" in the Work Sample section can only be made up for two weeks following the live class. Students need to watch the class recording as soon as possible after missing a class and then complete the Exit Ticket. You should be able to have the most updated grades by Friday evening after 5pm CST.
zoom_out_map

Checking Missing Assignments

The gradebook can be used to check which assigned lessons have not been completed yet. Access the gradebook from the Quick Links menu in the OLS. Once the gradebook opens click on a class to get more information for each assignment in that class. If an "M" is entered in the "Score" column rather than a number, that means that the student is missing that assignment. It was assigned on the Course Calendar, but the student has not attempted (or started but did not complete) it. An "M" is calculated into the student's average as a "0" for that assignment. Students are encourage to check their gradebook each week to look for any assignments with "M"s to work on prevent them from getting further behind and to improve their overall grade average.

How to Access Study Island

Throughout the year, students will participate in Study Island (online test preparation program). The results of these assignments and all other assessments will allow parents and teachers to work as partners in developing the best academic path for students. Students can use this program in order to both strengthen and build skills. Teachers will often use the Study Island program during Class Connect and tutoring sessions. If your student has an testing accommodations from a 504 or IEP, please be sure to use those while working in Study Island.

Learning coaches, please make sure to log time spent in Study Island as attendance time each week. Students may log into Study Island at www.studyisland.com or by clicking on the Study Island link from the Quick Links section in the OLS.

Usernames are the student's ID number@txva. Passwords are defaulted to txva. Example username: 12345@txva ; Example password: txva

Blackboard Collaborate Resource Links

Blackboard Collaborate (BbC) is a real-time video conferencing software program that allows TXVA staff to present live information on a virtual whiteboard, share applications and files with students and their families.

Before your student will be able to enter a class connect session in BbC the "Launcher" utility tool must first be installed on your computer. The following website will provide you with instructions on how to install the Launcher.
https://www.help.k12.com/s/article/Blackboard-Collaborate-Launcher-for-Class-Connect

It is a good idea for all BbC users to run the Audio Setup Wizard each time they enter the BbC classroom. Click on the following website for Class Connect sound and display troubleshooting steps, including how to run the Audio Setup Wizard.
https://www.help.k12.com/s/article/Class-Connect-Sound-and-Display-Troubleshooting

One feature the students will want to take advantage of is the ability to save the Whiteboard pages from the class connect session to review at a later time. The link below will give instructions on how to save Class Connect slides.
