May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of emotional well-being for our students, families, and staff. As we approach the end of the school year, students may experience increased stress related to testing, grades, and transitions. This month, we’re focusing on ways to support student mental health, build strong habits, and finish the year successfully.

Why Mental Health Matters?

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Students who feel supported emotionally are better able to focus, learn, and engage in school.

Here are some characteristics to look for when your student/child has changes in their mental health.

What to look for:

  • Increased irritability or frustration
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty focusing or completing work
  • Withdrawal from friends or activities

How to support:

  • Create space for open conversations (“How are you feeling lately?”)
  • Validate emotions without immediately trying to “fix” them
  • Encourage breaks and balance between school and downtime
  • Maintain consistent routines at home

Stress & Test Anxiety Support Stress & Test Anxiety Support

With end-of-year testing approaching, some students may feel anxious. A little nervousness is normal, but there are ways to help:

Try this with your child:

  • Deep breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 4
  • Positive self-talk: “I can do this,” “I’ve prepared for this”
  • Preparation routines: Pack materials, get good sleep, eat breakfast

Executive Functioning Supports Executive Functioning Supports

As the school year wraps up, students are expected to manage multiple assignments, deadlines, and responsibilities. Executive functioning skills are key during this time.

Helpful strategies:

  • Use a planner or digital calendar to track assignments
  • Break or "chunk" large tasks into smaller, manageable steps
  • Use timers (ex., 20–30 minute work blocks with short breaks)
  • Establish a consistent homework routine and workspace

Parent tip: Instead of asking “Did you finish your homework?”, try reframing it as
“What’s your plan for getting your work done tonight?”
