Attendance Matters
I want to share an update regarding student attendance. We are continuing to work on reducing chronic absenteeism across all grade levels, as lower percentages reflect stronger attendance.
Chronically Absent % As of March 26th
Kindergarten- 22.22% (-3.70%)
1st Grade- 19% (-3.00%)
2nd Grade- 20.39% (-1.94%)
3rd Grade- 18.27% (-2.88%)
4th Grade- 12.50% (-1.14%)
5th Grade- 16.49% (-2.06%)
As of today, 18.82% of our students are identified as Chronically Absent, which reflects a decrease of -2.35% compared to last year and -2.62% from last week!
SATISFACTORY: 9 or fewer absences during the school year.
Best chance to develop essential grade-level skills for success now and in the future.
CAUTION / WARNING: 10–17 days absent during the school year.
In danger of falling behind and not developing essential grade-level skills.
CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM: 18 or more days absent during the school year.
Missing critical instruction time and at the greatest risk of falling behind and/or dropping out of school.
Every day of school matters.

MCAP Testing
As we approach the end of the school year, our students will participate in the MCAP (Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program), which provides an important snapshot of what they know and are able to do and contributes to how our school is reflected on the Maryland School Report Card. To ensure students have access to all instruction before testing, the district has adjusted the schedule, and testing will now begin on April 28 and continue through May.
At Rock View, we are focused on making sure our students feel confident, prepared, and supported. One of the most important ways families can help is by ensuring students are at school every day and on time—consistent attendance truly makes a difference. At home, continuing strong routines (sleep, nutrition, and homework), encouraging a positive mindset, and having your child explain their thinking can go a long way in building readiness. Remind them to take their time, read carefully, and check their work—these small habits have a big impact.
Please take a moment to review Rock View’s testing calendar below, along with the MCPS resources provided to support learning at home. Thank you, as always, for your partnership and for helping us ensure every student is set up for success!

Many Voices, One Nation- Represent RVES!!
This year for the United States' 250th birthday MCPS is celebrating by creating an eBook with contributions from students across the district. The theme of the eBook is "Many Voices, One Nation," and each school will choose one piece of original work reflecting the theme to be included. If you are interested in applying for your work to be Rock View's contribution, check out the flyer below for more details!

It's time for the Spring Book Fair!
The Spring Book Fair is just around the corner and we need your help! As you know, this event would not be possible without the help of our amazing community volunteers. Next month, from April 20th - 24th we will be hosting our Spring Book fair in the Media Center from 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM each day, in addition to our Family Shopping Night on Wednesday, April 22nd.
We will need help setting up the book fair, assisting students with making their wish lists, processing student purchases and breaking down the book fair. If you are available to volunteer, we need all the help we can get!
For those that have never volunteered at the book fair, please consider signing up. We love having new faces and definitely need the help! The book fair is truly one of my favorite times to volunteer - the kids are always very excited to see what's available and it is a fun way to interact with the students and learn about the different things that they like. If you haven't done it before, I highly encourage you to sign up for a shift or two!
The PTA will be hosting a preview breakfast for the teachers to check out the book fair and create their wish lists before the book fair officially opens. If you do not have time to volunteer, please consider donating some breakfast items for the preview.

Volunteer Information
Volunteers Make a Difference
MCPS welcomes volunteers! Our schools are stronger because parents, caregivers, and community members step in to help. Whether it’s chaperoning a trip, coaching, or lending a hand in the classroom, volunteers make a real difference for kids. At the same time, nothing matters more than keeping every child safe. That’s why we require all volunteers to complete the required training—and some volunteers must also complete a fingerprinted background check, including:
Volunteer coaches
Grade 6 Outdoor Education
Overnight or extended day field trip chaperones (returning after 7:00 p.m. or out-of-area/state)
Volunteers working 1:1 with students unsupervised

Your Voice Matters! Share Your Feedback Today
We want to hear from you! Earlier this year, MCPS implemented significant operational changes and shifts — affecting topics including grading, safety (including police in schools), the Student Code of Conduct, open lunch and cell phones in schools. MCPS is distributing surveys on several of these issues important to families, students and school-based staff; we want to know how they are working for you in practice. The survey is available here.
