A Message from Our Principal

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! We hope this newsletter finds you well and ready for an exciting start to 2024. Here are some important updates and reminders for the upcoming month:

End of Second Quarter: The end of the second quarter is approaching on January 11th. It's a great time to reflect on the progress made so far and set goals for the remainder of the school year.

No School on January 12th: Please note that there will be no school on January 12th. Staff will be provided time to complete report cards.

Report Cards: Report cards for the second quarter will be sent home on January 19th. Take time to review your child's progress, celebrate their achievements, and discuss any areas that may need attention.

Hearing Testing: Hearing testing will take place on January 9th-11th for select students. If your child is involved in this testing, additional information will be provided.

Professional Development: "Science of Reading": Throughout January, our teachers will be engaging in professional development focused on the "Science of Reading." This initiative aims to enhance our teaching practices in reading instruction, ensuring that we provide the best possible support for our students.

Outdoor Activities: As winter continues, please ensure that your child comes to school dressed warmly. We will go outside for recess if the temperature is above 15 degrees, so it's essential for students to be prepared for outdoor activities.

Home Activities: Here are some suggested activities for students to do at home:

Encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes each night.

Work on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills.

For kindergarten students, focus on mastering letter sounds to build a strong foundation for reading.

We appreciate your ongoing support in your child's education. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or the school office. Wishing you a wonderful January filled with growth and learning!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Voegeli

Be Smart About Social Media

In the social world we live, many kids use some form of social media. While social media can help kids connect with friends and family, explore new interests and areas of the world, and enhance their creativity, it can also lead to risks and added responsibility. Social media can be harmful if it is not used appropriately.

Without meaning to, kids can easily share more online than they should. Kids often post photos of themselves online or use their real names, birthdates, location, or school name. This information can make them easy targets for online predators or others with bad intentions.

Additionally, kids sometimes forget that photos, videos, and comments made online can’t be taken back after they have been sent or posted. It’s impossible to completely erase something once it’s been posted online. This may not cause problems for a child now but can lead to issues years later as they apply for college or a job. It is common for a college admissions office or recruiter to scour the internet for information on an applicant, ultimately discovering something a child may not want them to find. If a child would be embarrassed for a family member or future boss to see a photo or video, they shouldn’t post it.

Studies have shown that social media can negatively impact a child’s mental health. The pressure to get “likes” or keep up with other peers online can lead to depression and anxiety as well as unrealistic expectations.

What can families do?

  • Limit the time kids spend on social media.
  • “Friend” or “follow” your kids’ social profiles and remind them never to “friend” strangers.
  • Encourage kids to use privacy settings.
  • Remind kids that mean behavior is never okay, including online.

Check out the District’s website for additional social media tips.

Box Tops for Education

We are collecting Box Tops! Traditional Box Tops clips are being phased out of production, but may continue to be found on many products throughout a store. You can still clip and send them to school.

Every valid Box Tops clip is worth 10¢ for Loess Hills. Make sure each one has a clearly visible product acronym and expiration date.

Box Tops - New Scanning Feature

Eventually the Box Tops program will become digital-only. Participating brands are starting to change their packaging from a traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Top label.

If you see this label, use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth 10¢ each for Loess Hills. The app will find participating products purchased at any store and instantly add cash to our school's earnings online.
