Great First Couple of Days! Great First Couple of Days!

Dear BES Families,

Last week was great! It was so fun meeting all the new Wildcats and welcoming our students back to BES! Thank you for helping make drop-off and pick-up so smooth. I have included that information below as a reminder!

I encourage you to check-out our student handbook which is located on our website or in your child's agenda book. Here are a few things I want to highlight for you!

Lunch: We love having you come eat lunch with your children. We have our TeamMates Cafe that parents can eat in with their kids, but we cannot allow friends to go eat along with you and your child. We also have outdoor picnic tables in our Prairie Garden area. If you bring in outside food from restaurants, we do ask that you follow our meal competitor policy and have the food taken out of fast food type of wrapping/packaging.

Birthdays: We know how special birthdays are and each child is recognized for their birthday in our morning assembly in the gym. If your child's birthday is in June or July, we celebrate their half-birthday in December and January. This week we celebrated all August birthdays that came before our first day of school. We do not allow for birthday treats, snacks, or treat bags to be handed out at school. Each teacher makes your child's birthday special for them on their special day!

Volunteers: If you are interested in volunteering at school, we would LOVE to have you! Please look in the newsletters for upcoming Volunteer Training opportunities. These are very quick. If you are ever to be with a small group of students, either on a field trip or working in the school, you will need to attend a session.

Glow Bash

Each year we have a fun event that helps us raise money for all of our fun at BES! This includes special activities like our Super Bowl party, field trip expenses, incentives, our end-of-year field day, prizes for our students, and more! On Back-to-School night, received information and a packet for donations. We ask that students ask for donations and return the envelope to school before or on the evening of our event, September 6th. That night, we will take over the Wildcat Stadium with music, games, and dancing! We will have food trucks available for you and tons of awesome Glow Bash Gear! It's a really fun night!

Have a great week,

Cindy Apple, Principal

5th Grade Band activities start this week!

Over the course of the next three weeks, every 5th grade student will get the opportunity to make a sound on parts of the flute, clarinet, trumpet, & trombone. You can see the rotation of classes in the picture. We hope to have every 5th grader try to learn how to play an instrument this year! The official band signing day is during class on Thursday, September 4th.

Meyer Music will be available for instrument rentals this year. The official rental night is on Thursday, September 4th from 5:00-6:30 PM. You can just drop by and pick it up if you rent your instrument in advance through their website. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Mr. Tiedeman if you need help getting an instrument this year! (tiedemanz@usd416.org)

The official first day of band class will be on Friday, September 5th!

Mornings

Our doors open to the foyer at 7am. Students can get into the commons at 7:30am. If you drop off before 7:30am, we do not have supervision available. However, they can sit inside the foyer. If your student is eating breakfast, we advise you have them here at 7:30am. The first bell rings at 7:55 and the teachers will be picking them up from the gym and getting the day started. We have fun mornings, so you do not want them to miss out!

Also, if you arrive at 8am or later, you will have to come inside with your student to sign them in. If a student arrives late, we will call parents to return to the school to sign them in.

Being late to school is like being late to work - it's not good!

Please let us know how we can help you to be on time each and every day!

Drop-Off and Pick-Up

The first week or so it is extremely busy and everyone is worried - don't be! We will be out there guiding you through our parking lot. Please just watch for little ones, stay off your phones, and be patient. If you are picking up at one of the other buildings, do no worry if you are running behind. We will hold onto your little ones until you arrive. It is more important that you arrive safely than on time!

If you need to make changes to after-school plans, please call the OFFICE. Do not only let the teacher know. Often teachers may be absent or not see their emails and miss the notice. You must call 837.1900 or email: broadmoor@usd416.org to let us know in the office.

Students cannot ride home with friends on the bus unless they are riders on the same route. Our buses are full and we cannot allow extra riders without transportation applications and information to ride on routes.

Drop-Off

Drop-off of all students will still take place along the east side of BES. Students should exit their parents’ vehicle along the front sidewalks, from the BES front door all the way to the playground. Once your child has exited, please check for traffic and pull out to exit the lot. You do not need to wait in the line. We have adults out there to make sure kids get into school safely! At the corner of the drop-off line, on the SE corner, be sure that both lines of traffic come to a stop as a new crosswalk will be at the stop sign going east and west. You may then exit to South 5th Street or to Metcalf.

Pick-Up for 3rd/4th

  • All 3rd and 4th grade students will exit the south doors.

  • We encourage you to not park and walk up to meet your child. If you do, we ask that you model safe pedestrian practices and cross at a crosswalk. Do not walk with your children in between vehicles.

  • It is easy to stay in your vehicle and go through the line. Once everyone gets the hang of it, the pick-up takes about 10 minutes!

Vehicles need to line up at the very front of the drive-thru lane at the SW side of BES. This line will wrap around to the east side of the building. When your child is safely in your vehicle, please check for traffic and then pull around the line to exit the lot. You do not need to wait in line. You may then exit to South 5th Street or to Metcalf.

Pick-Up for 5th

  • All 5th grade students and walkers/bike riders will exit the front doors of BES.

  • 5th grade vehicles are asked to pull into the lot east of BES. Please try to park along the sidewalk so that students do not have to walk through the parking lot. Students will be brought over to you. You may then exit at the south end of the lot, near the soccer fields.

  • If you have a 3rd/4th grader AND a 5th grader: The 3rd/4th grader will walk from the south end to meet the 5th grader at the flag pole area and then cross with other 5th graders to your vehicle.

Walkers/Bike Riders

Due to traffic and safety concerns, all walkers or bike riders are encouraged to only cross at the marked crosswalks that have crossing guards. This is at the corner of 5th and Metcalf, at the west end exit of the BES lot, at the 5th street entrance to BES, and at the south end of the BES parking lot. Please walk the route with your students prior to the first day of school so that they understand the safest route to take each day.

Reminders:

1. Please do not ask your child to walk up to 5th street to get into your vehicle. This is not permitted.

2. Please park or line-up in the areas we have asked you to and do not try to cut in front of others.

3. If you ask your children to wait for you at the playground, understand we will not be supervising that area after school.

4. Please share procedures and policies with anyone picking up your children.

Attendance and School Calendar Attendance and School Calendar

Please take note of our school calendars when planning your family's vacations.

Attendance is a focus at BES and we want your children at school! It can be very difficult for students to get caught up sometimes when they miss for extended periods of time. For example, when a student misses a week of school, that is up to 450 minutes of math instruction they are missing!

If your family does have a trip planned, we do not provide lessons or materials ahead of those trips. Teachers will work with you to schedule times when your student can be given that instruction and guided work time to ensure mastery of skills. This may have to happen before or after school, but we will also try to work during the school day as well.

GREAT school habits now help prepare students for future success!
