The Eagle Eye
Oak Hill United School Corporation - September 2026
Hardman's Happenings
Hello Oak Hill Families!
It is hard to believe we are already several weeks into the school year! September is always an exciting time at Oak Hill as our schools are fully back into the rhythm of learning, activities, athletics, and events. It has been wonderful to see our students connecting with their teachers and classmates, taking on new challenges, and making the most of the opportunities available to them. I continue to be grateful for the support of our families and community and for the many people who work together each day to make Oak Hill a great place for our students.
Families recently received information about how to view midterm grades through Skyward Family Access. I encourage you to take a few minutes to log in, select the Grading Tile, and review your child(ren)’s Midterm 1 (M1) grades. Midterm is a great opportunity to celebrate successes, identify areas where additional support may be needed, and make adjustments before the end of the first quarter grading period which will be October 2, 2026. Our students are off to a great start, and your continued involvement plays an important role in their success. Please continue to stay connected with your child’s teachers and reach out whenever you have questions or concerns.
Upcoming eLearning Days
Wednesday, September 30 – Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 12:00–8:00 p.m., and the day will also serve as an asynchronous eLearning day for students. There will be no in-person classes that day. Assignments will be posted in Google Classroom for students in grades 3–12 and SeeSaw for students in grades K–2 and must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on September 30. If your child does not have reliable internet access at home, please contact their teacher in advance so appropriate accommodations can be made. Additional information about parent-teacher conferences will be shared soon by your child’s school.
Homecoming Week
What a great week it has been celebrating Homecoming at Oak Hill! Our students and staff have had a lot of fun showing their Oak Hill spirit through dress-up days, competitions, activities, and celebrations throughout the week. It has been wonderful to see the energy and school pride across our buildings!
Tonight, we will wrap up Homecoming Week as the Golden Eagles take on the Alexandria Tigers, along with the crowning of our Homecoming King and Queen. We hope to see a great crowd come out to help us finish an exciting week and cheer on our Golden Eagles! You can look back at this week’s activities, competitions, and grade-level results in this week’s Homecoming itinerary.
As a reminder, Oak Hill Schools will host a Community Forum on Wednesday, September 23, at 6:00 p.m. in the Oak Hill High School Lecture Area to provide information about the operating referendum that will appear on the November 3 ballot.
The purpose of the meeting is to help families and community members better understand the financial challenges facing Oak Hill Schools, including the impact of recent changes to Indiana’s property-tax laws, why the district is pursuing an operating referendum, how referendum funding would be used, and the estimated impact on local taxpayers.
There will also be time during the meeting for community members to ask questions. If you are unable to attend but would like additional information, please feel free to contact me at sheriha@ohusc.k12.in.us or 765-395-3341, ext. 1101. I encourage our families and community members to attend and learn more about the referendum before the November election.
Thank you for your continued support and for the important role you play in making Oak Hill such a special place for our students. We have had a wonderful start to the school year, and I am excited about all that is still ahead. I hope your family enjoys the many activities, events, and opportunities that come with the fall season, and I look forward to seeing many of you throughout our schools and community in the weeks ahead!
Yours in Education,
Sheri Hardman

News from Converse Elementary
Kindergarten Nursery Rhyme Knowledge Unit- NURSERY RHYME OLYMPICS!
Our Kinders have been working on Nursery Rhymes to address the standards: K.RC.2 – Reading Comprehension: “With support, retell familiar stories, poems, and nursery rhymes, including key details.” as well as K.RF for Reading Foundations. This is an excellent way for our students to work on identifying and producing rhyming words, hearing beginning/ending sounds, syllables, and manipulating sounds! We are working hard in Kindergarten to build our READING FOUNDATIONS while we have a little fun!
Cubby Cuisine
Mrs. Runyan's Kindergarten Cubby Cuisine was up and running at the end of their Nursery Rhyme unit! They read the book "After the Fall," and then they were able to cook their own breakfast of waffles and eggs! They had so much fun mixing, cracking, scrambling, and eating!
2nd Grade Tall Tales Knowledge Unit- culminating activity day!
Our 2nd graders had a Knowledge Unit on Tall Tales, learning about Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry and Casey Jones. They had so much fun learning about these larger-than-life characters while they worked the skills of exaggeration, character/plot/setting, comparison, and comprehension. OH! And they also had PANCAKES WITH PAUL BUNYAN! No offense, moms and grandmas, but they said PAUL'S pancakes were the BEST pancakes they have EVER had!
They covered so many standards in this unit! Here are a few of the SEVERAL that were covered...
2.RC.1 Ask and answer questions about the main idea and key details to demonstrate comprehension.
2.RC.2 Recount the beginning, middle, and end of stories, including fables/folktales, and determine the central message, lesson, or moral.
2.RC.3 Describe how characters respond to major events and how characters affect the plot.

Swayzee News
🍂 School Fundraiser
We hope that your student is working hard at raising funds with our Monster Mash Dash fundraiser. As a reminder, our fundraiser is used to fund field trips, pay for inflatables for Field Day, purchase school shirts, and other fun activities for our students throughout the school year. The top fundraisers will earn cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50. There are also class prizes for the 5th and 6th grade classes that raise the most funds. Our goal is to raise $7,500.
We are also looking for people who would like to sponsor a trick or treat table or trunk at our Monster Mash Dash. If you would like to sign up, please contact the school office.
🦅 ATTENDANCE MATTERS — BE HERE!
Every school day matters! Regular attendance is one of the simplest and most important ways families can support student success.
At Swayzee, 7 class periods missed equals one full day of absence. Once a student reaches 70 periods of absence—excused or unexcused—it impacts our school attendance score on the state accountability system.
More importantly, missed days mean missed instruction, conversations, practice, activities, and connections that are difficult to recreate.
And remember… Underground Attendance Days can happen anytime! Students were treated to their first Underground Attendance Day this week. They all received mini cupcakes just for being present!
Want to know what the prize is?
BE HERE!
📱 CHILDREN & TECHNOLOGY
Technology can be an incredible tool, but our children need adults helping them learn to use it safely and responsibly.
For students this age, parents should regularly know what apps, games, websites, and messaging platforms their child is using—and who they are communicating with online.
A good family rule is simple:
If you wouldn't be comfortable with your child talking privately with that person in your home, they shouldn't be talking privately with them online either.
Continue talking with your child about protecting personal information, never sending inappropriate photos, recognizing suspicious online behavior, and telling a trusted adult immediately if someone online makes them uncomfortable.
❤️ SMALL SCHOOL — BIG HEART
Our theme this year is more than a slogan.
Being a school with a Big Heart means looking out for one another, including others, showing kindness, helping when someone needs it, and understanding that every person who walks through our doors contributes something important to our school.
Throughout the year, we will continue finding ways for our students to put those words into action.
Kindness is free. Sprinkle it everywhere.
🚗 ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL REMINDERS
Thank you for helping us keep arrival and dismissal safe and efficient.
Please continue to be patient in our parking and pickup areas, follow staff directions, and watch carefully for students and pedestrians.
A few extra minutes of patience can make a big difference when hundreds of students are entering or leaving the building at the same time.
Safety will always come before speed.
💧 QUICK REMINDERS
Students may bring a water bottle to school. Water only, please.
Please encourage your child to charge their Chromebook each evening and bring it to school ready for the day.
Students should continue to follow the school dress code and use technology appropriately.
If your child will be absent, please notify the school office.
And don't forget to check backpacks! Even in 5th and 6th grade, important papers have an amazing ability to live at the bottom of a backpack for several weeks. 😄
🦅 FROM MRS. COLLINS
One of my favorite things about September is watching Swayzee begin to feel like our school again. The nervousness of the first few days starts disappearing, personalities emerge, friendships grow, routines become familiar, and our students begin to realize just how much they are capable of accomplishing.
Thank you for trusting us with your children each day. We don't take that responsibility lightly.
We have a lot of learning—and a lot of fun—ahead of us.
Here's to a great September!
Mrs. Collins
Principal, Swayzee Elementary
💙 SMALL SCHOOL • BIG HEART 💛

Paisley Stewart is a wonderful friend and classmate who consistently shows kindness and consideration toward others. She makes a genuine effort to make sure everyone feels included, valued, and has someone to work or spend time with.
Several teachers have noticed Paisley quietly looking around the classroom to make sure no one is left without a partner or group. This simple but thoughtful action shows an incredible level of maturity, empathy, and awareness of those around her.
Paisley’s kindness often happens without seeking attention or recognition, which makes it even more meaningful. Her caring nature and willingness to include others help create a welcoming classroom and make Swayzee Elementary a better place for everyone. Greetings from Oak Hill Junior High
With all of the excitement and learning happening at our building, it’s hard to believe that we have already celebrated Labor Day weekend and have been in school for over one month! Everyone is now back in the routine and our teachers and staff have been working hard to get the new school year started off well. Before you know it, the leaves will begin to change color, students will be participating in homecoming activities, and fall break will be upon us.
As a reminder, Oak Hill Junior High School opens its doors to students at 7:35AM and classes begin at 8:10AM. Once the doors open, students may go to the cafeteria to grab breakfast or to the JH commons area. If you bring your son or daughter to school, please make sure you drop them off at door #23 at the back of the JH. Car riders should not be dropped off at the front of the building. This is for car riders to avoid bus traffic. School is dismissed at 3:10PM. Car riders also need to be picked up at door #23 by 3:20PM.
Once again, the staff at Oak Hill Junior High School will do its very best to make this the most successful year for your 7th or 8th grader. If you ever need anything, you may contact Junior High at 765-395-3341 and select option 5. You may also contact Mr. Shawn Means, Oak Hill Junior High School Principal, at extension 5001.
The end of the 1st Grading period is October 2nd, and fall break is from October 17 through October 25.
Attendance at Home Football Games
It is our goal at Oak Hill Junior High School for our students and families to be able to attend athletic events throughout the school year. With so many people in attendance at these events, especially varsity football and basketball, safety is a top priority for all of us. In order for these events to be enjoyable for all in attendance, we need the following expectations to be met:
1. All JH students need to be accompanied by an adult who stays for the entire contest. An older sibling who is in school is not considered an adult. These are not drop and go events, and parents/guardians must stay the entire time.
2. No balls will be allowed to be taken into the event by spectators. If balls are brought in, they will be confiscated and will need to be picked up at the end of the event.
3. Students are to stay with the adults that bring them to the athletic contest or seated in a specified “JH section”. Students should not be running around. If a student comes to an athletic event they are to come and cheer for Oak Hill.
4. Students will not be allowed to play on the practice fields or around the concession area and should keep off of other fields (softball, baseball, etc.)
Thank you for your help in ensuring that our home athletic events are enjoyable for all in attendance.
Medicine Policy at the JH
In order to provide additional safety for your child, all medicine must be hand delivered to the JH secretary or health aide. Also, any medicine that is to go home with a student must be picked up by the parent. This includes empty medicine bottles.
Oak Hill Junior High “Spirit Week” (September 14-September 18)
Even though our staff and students have worked hard to start the school year, we still take time to have fun and promote school spirit. During the high school homecoming week (September 14-September 18), the junior high will have its own “Spirit Week”. Each day of the week will consist of a “School Spirit Dress Up Day” theme. We will also have our own “School Spirit” games during the afternoon on Thursday, September 17. The junior high student council will help in the planning of “School Spirit” week. We look forward to excitement from our students and staff. It will be great to see everyone showing off their school pride! It will be an awesome week full of fun and activities. The only question is who will show the most spirit…….the 7th or 8th grade?
8th Grade Outsiders Day - September 25
On Friday, September 25th, your students will participate in “Outsiders Day” after finishing the novel The Outsiders. This day will consist of watching the movie at the Eagles Theater and having several contests: costume, time-period dance, podcast, muscle car, shoebox model, poem/rap, music, diorama, and best re-enactment. The students will also be completing a capstone project for the book. Those projects will be showcased that day in both the lecture area and the JH library. You can also check out these projects on Google Classroom.
Also, in the past we have had several family members showcase their classic cars. If you or someone else you know has a classic car that they would like to show the students, please email me and I’ll give you more information. (bethbo@ohusc.k12.in.us)
Thank you,

College Go Week is a national initiative whose primary aim is to encourage and prepare high school students for college and future career pathways. This year the Junior High will be participating with dress up days for College Go Week!
Parent Teacher Conferences/ELearning Day - Wednesday, September 30
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, September 30th. From 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm, we will hold conferences in an open house style, where parents are welcome to stop in on a walk-in basis to connect with teachers. This time is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, ask questions, and strengthen the partnership between home and school. Teachers may also reach out to parents of students who may be struggling academically or behaviorally and could benefit from more in-depth conversations. As always, parents may always reach out to their child’s teacher(s) if there is an academic or behavior concern.
We look forward to seeing you and working together to support your child’s success.
Thank you for your continued support!
September 30th will also be an asynchronous elearning day for students. Information about eLearning will be sent to parents/guardians via Skyward prior to September 30. Asynchronous eLearning means that students will have assignments posted to their google classroom. Assignments will be due by midnight on Friday, October 2nd. If you have any questions, please call the JH main office.
