Principal's Message Principal's Message

Greetings,

We are off to a great start at Berkmar Middle School! As we complete our first full week, students are settling into routines, building relationships, and engaging in learning. We appreciate the positive energy our students have brought to school each day and the support of our families in helping us begin the year successfully.

Next week, students will take the i Ready Math Diagnostic on Monday and Tuesday. This assessment helps teachers better understand each student’s strengths and areas for growth so we can provide the appropriate instruction and support throughout the year.

Please help your child prepare by encouraging them to:

  • Get a good night’s rest
  • Arrive at school on time
  • Bring their fully charged Chromebook
  • Take their time and do their best

As we Focus Forward, we remain committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and engaging learning environment where every student can grow and succeed. Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We look forward to a great year together!

Warm Regards,

Felecia C. Jones

Principal

Ways to Get Involved in Your Child's School

It's a known fact that children are more successful in school when their families get involved. Involved parents:

  • Improve their children's work habits and behavior at school.
  • Communicate with and help teachers.
  • Advocate for school improvements.

Here are some specific ways teachers recommend that parents engage:

  • Set firm standards for behavior, read to your child, and limit screen time.
  • Give teachers lots of information about your child's interests, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Give attention to communications from the school, and respond in a timely way.
  • Communicate regularly through parent conferences and informal discussions, in person or online.
  • Be aware of school education policies and opportunities to participate in their development.

One of the integral parts of creating a harmonious and distraction-free learning space is our "Power Down" electronic device (cell phones, airpods, headphones, etc.) policy. We understand the importance of technology and staying connected in our modern world. However, during school hours, the focus should be on learning, collaborating, and being present.

Should there be an emergency or an urgent concern to communicate with your child, please reach out to the school's main office, 770-638-2300. We will ensure your child receives the message promptly.

GCPS encourages families to follow these steps to resolve concerns:

1. Teacher - First, talk to your child’s teacher or a counselor at school for assistance. Most concerns are resolved at the classroom level.

2. Assistant Principal - If the concern is not resolved at the classroom level, please visit with your child’s assistant principal.

3. Principal - If working with the AP does not adequately address the issue, please meet with the school principal.

4. Cluster Superintendent - If the issue persists, please call 678-301-6000, and ask to speak to the cluster superintendent who is assigned to the school your child attends.

5. Chief of Schools - If, after following steps one through four, your concern has not been resolved to your satisfaction, please contact the Chief of Schools for School Improvement and Operations.

Other Resources
If you are experiencing an emergency, dial 9-1-1. The GCPS Hotline for anonymous reporting of potential violence is 770-822-6513. If you have a non-emergency criminal concern, please contact local law enforcement.
