Practicing the Nurtured Heart Approach

Many thanks to Andrew for sharing these excerpts and Nurturing Our Hearts!

The Work of All

We have no need of a separate self or a separate existence. In fact, nothing can exist by itself. We must inter-be with all things. Look at a flower. It cannot exist by itself. It can only inter-be with the whole cosmos. And that is true for you too. Think of the ocean. You see the water, but you also see the waves. The waves are made up of water, but the waves are part of the water. You cannot separate wave from water. Both are reliant upon each other. The flower is not just the flower, it is made up of the sun, the rain, the clouds, the air, the soil. This is the essence of the concept of "inter-be".

When you build a house, you must build from a solid foundation if you want your house to be strong, stable, and able to withstand time and the elements. A house built on unstable ground is more likely to fall under adverse conditions than a house built on a sure foundation. Humans are no different. Abraham Maslow stated that in order for humans to reach their fullest potential, certain basic needs must be met first. Without that stable foundation, humans can grow...but may fall under adverse conditions, like a house. How many of our students come in to school built on an unstable foundation? What are we doing to help that foundation become more solid?

Social Emotional Learning

Self-regulation skills are one of the biggest keys for success for students in the classroom. These are some of the skills that help students focus during lessons, wait their turn to share in group activities, transition to a new task when time is up, and start tasks right away. Self-regulation skills are extraordinarily important in the classroom, especially as we continue to place more and more demands on children and teens.

Over the next several weeks we will review one strategy at a time.

5. Providing an Emotion Check In

Managing emotions is a big part of self-regulation skills. When we understand our feelings and cope with them effectively, we free up emotional space for working through other challenges.

  • Support emotional self-regulation by providing a daily emotions check-in. Students can start with a daily emotions check-in worksheet to assess how they’re feeling and what they might need to feel their best for the rest of the day. Use this free emotions check-in to get started.
  • It’s also important to not just acknowledge these emotions, but validate them. Kids and teens need to know it is okay to feel however they feel.

PerformCare Support LIne

This is a good option if you just want to learn more about what PerformCare is and how it works. We frequently refer families to PerformCare which is a point of access for a variety of services for children who require behavioral health services. This support line is open every 2 weeks. A brief presentation is given explaining PerformCare and they participants are welcome to ask questions.
