Starkey Bear Necessities
October 2026
Hi Starkey Families,
As we approach the end of the first quarter of the school year, we have SO much to celebrate at Starkey!
Mrs. Stevens is our Teacher of the Year nominee and Mrs. McGarvey is our Support Staff of the Year nominee! Both of these amazing women are more than deserving of this honor and they are a great representation of our wonderful Starkey staff.
Thank you to Beach Pizza for supporting Starkey and to all of the families who joined us for this fun night of dining together.
When the quarter concludes, we will not only be sending out report cards, but we will also be celebrating students who earn Honor Roll and Principal's List in grades 3-5 and Perfect Attendance in grades Pre K - 5. Our friendly Attendance is Poppin' competition winners (one class per grade) will also be announced and celebrated during lunches.
Please make sure that your students attend school each day, arriving on time and staying for the full day (of course, unless they are sick). We truly miss them when they are not here and there is no substitute for learning in the classroom with their peers.
Sincerely,
Ms. Kranzel

Volunteer Information
A big thank-you to everyone who joined us for our first Spirit Night at Beach Pizza! We loved seeing so many Starkey families and appreciate your support of our school community. We can’t wait for more fun Spirit Nights together throughout the year!
A friendly reminder to our families: volunteers are an important part of making Starkey Elementary such a wonderful place to learn and grow. If you haven’t already, please consider completing the process to become a Level 2 volunteer so you’ll be ready to volunteer at school and participate in opportunities throughout the year.
We’re also looking ahead to our Great American Teach-In! If you have a career, hobby, talent, passion, or special experience you’d like to share with our students, we’d love to have you join us as a presenter. This is a wonderful opportunity to inspire our students and give them a glimpse into the many possibilities that await them beyond the classroom.
Thank you for being such an important part of our Starkey family. We look forward to seeing you at school, at our upcoming Spirit Nights, and throughout the year!
Go, Starkey! 💙🐾

Our little mathematicians are learning through hands-on exploration! Working together, students practiced sorting objects by a single attribute, such as color or shape, and strengthened their counting skills using one-to-one correspondence. They had fun sorting, counting, sharing ideas, and learning from one another!

Kindergarten
This past month in Kindergarten we have been learning to work with our numbers 0-10. This included determining greater than and less than, one more or one less than a number and subitizing. In ELA we have been working hard on determining the characters, setting and events in a story. We have started to read and write CVC words as well. In science we learned all about our 5 senses and how we use them to observe the natural world around us every single day.
1st Grade
First grade working on adding, finding the missing addend, modeling math, and looking for patterns while sharing ideas with each other.
2nd Grade
Weather Patterns in Science
3rd Grade
In 3rd grade, we've been exploring some exciting topics! In science, we learned that stars come in many different types, and we discovered that our Sun is actually a star—and it's the closest one to us! We learned how the Sun sends energy all the way to Earth. In math, we've been building our addition and subtraction skills using different strategies to solve problems quickly and accurately. We also practiced tackling one- and two-step word problems that involve adding and subtracting. In ELA we are studying animals as we learn the components of informational texts. We are becoming experts on topics through writing essays in response to various prompts.
4th Grade
4th Grade students have had an incredibly busy month packed with exciting, hands-on learning. Here is a look at what we have been up to across our subjects:
- 🔬 Science: Young scientists have been exploring Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time. Through active, hands-on experiments, students mastered the differences between rotation vs. revolution and how they affect our world.
- 🔢 Math: We are bringing math to life! Students are sharpening their critical thinking by tackling real-world word problems using multiplication and division.
📚 ELA:
- Module A Wrap-Up: Students finished our first module with a blast! They participated in a Team Wayground Activity to collaboratively review our class book, "Save Me a Seat."
Module B Kickoff: We are officially diving into informational texts! Over the next few weeks, students will build strong reading skills by focusing on central ideas, authors' perspective, text structures, and summarizing informational texts. While answering the Essential Question: How are animals in Florida impacted by changes in their environment?
Writing: Students began writing their first Expository Essay to answer the
Prompt: What affects do animals and humans have on each other when they live in the same area?
5th Grade
Our 5th graders have been busy putting their math and science skills to work! In math, students are learning how to add fractions and use their problem-solving skills to find sums. In science, our young scientists are testing and identifying minerals by investigating their properties and characteristics.
Counselor's Corner
PE
Students did fitness testing (Push-Ups, Pull-Ups) and worked on Loco motor skills like skipping, hopping, galloping and balancing on one foot. We then went into our Jump Rope Unit. Students learn how to use a short and long jump rope and get a opportunity to test into the Jump Rope Club. One minute or longer for students in grades 2nd-5th. Students also worked together with partner jumps and skills. In October we will begin a throwing and catching unit as well as punting and kicking a ball off a tee. In grades 3rd-5th we teach the students flag football and cheerleading culminating in a super bowl at the end of the month.
Art
Kindergarten students are creating a landscape with their own Wild Robot. They are using the classroom ipads to build a landscape scene complete with a robot on the Faces iMake apps.
First grade is creating cityscapes using printmaking techniques. They are building skyscrapers using types of lines and shapes stamped on paper.
Second grade students are using types of angles and lines to create cathedrals. They use a paper towel roll to create the rose window. They are using printmaking techniques to stamp out their architectural pieces.
Third grade students are creating habitats complete with an amphibian. They are using a variety of mediums to create their artwork; watercolor, oil pastels, glue to line out the drawings.
Fourth grade is creating an analogous octopus. Analogous colors are colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. They are creating a habitat for their octopus to reside in.
Fifth grade students are finishing up their Tag Art vanity license plate designs that will sell online and generate proceeds for the arts in Pinellas County schools. They are also beginning to plan out their next project- sculptures!
Music
Mrs. Mullins’ class explored different kinds of tempo in an ocean-themed music class. They were moving “Largo” (slow) like jellyfish, “Presto” (fast) like dolphins, and freezing when the shark showed up!
Library
Digital Responsibility has been the theme of our lessons in the library this month.
Our first lessons in the series are:
Kindergarten - How do you go places safely while online?
First grade- How do we balance our time online to stay healthy?
Second grade - What should you do if someone is mean to you online?
Third grade - How does what I do online affect myself, my community, and possibly the world?
Fourth grade - Does AI think like a human? Why or why not?
Fifth grade - How do we identify clues in digital images to determine whether content may be AI-generated or human-created, using evidence to support our reasoning?
We continue to strive to be the best Digital Citizens that we can be!
Gifted
In gifted, we are learning about how biotic and abiotic things react in an environment. Thanks to the Siegler family and Willow Tree Nursery, each child now has their own plumeria plant which they are cultivating.
They're really starting to grow on us 😉
