District Newsletter- March 2026 District Newsletter- March 2026

A Message From Superintendent Dr. Joseph Hoelzle A Message From Superintendent Dr. Joseph Hoelzle

It’s hard to believe we’re already in the final nine weeks of the school year. March certainly lived up to its reputation, coming in like a lion and, at times, sticking around that way. Here’s hoping April brings us some much-needed sunshine and a chance to enjoy the spring season a bit more.

Spring is always one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the year in our schools. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a great turnout at events across the district, and it has been encouraging to watch our students and families stay engaged. The weeks ahead are full of opportunities, classroom learning, performances, competitions, celebrations, and, of course, major milestones like graduation for our seniors. It’s an exciting time, and there’s a lot to look forward to.

As we navigate the final few weeks of school, staying focused is key. Warmer weather and the anticipation of summer can make it easy to lose momentum, but these last weeks matter. There is still important learning ahead, and it’s a chance for students to finish strong and reflect on how much they’ve grown this year. Encouragement at home goes a long way, helping students stay motivated and reminding them of the progress they’ve made can make a real difference.

I also want to take a moment to recognize our teachers and staff. The time, effort, and care you put into preparing students, especially during state testing season, do not go unnoticed. While testing is only one measure, the daily work you do to support, guide, and challenge our students is what truly makes an impact. Thank you for your professionalism, dedication, and consistency you bring each day.

Spring sports are now underway, and it’s great to see our student-athletes back in action. Whether competing on the field or track, they continue to represent our schools with pride. We wish all of our teams a successful season. The lessons learned through athletics, teamwork, perseverance, and accountability are invaluable and carry far beyond the game.

As we approach spring break, I hope everyone has the chance to rest and recharge. Whether you’re traveling or simply enjoying time at home, this is an opportunity to step away from the daily routine and reset for the final weeks ahead. We’re proud of the work our students have done so far and look forward to finishing the year strong, together.

Enjoy your break, and we’ll see you soon for the home stretch.

Encourage your child to take the time to read directions carefully, look back into the selection/question for answers or data, and always review the test to make sure every item is answered (proofread). Ask that your child try to do his/her best! Encourage your child to maintain a positive attitude.

Please make sure your child is at school on time. Try not to schedule any doctor, dentist, or any other appointments on test mornings. It is especially important for your child to have a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast the morning of the test. We are very proud of the hard work that is done by our students and staff. With the continued efforts of the students, staff, and support of the parents, this school year should be just as successful as those in the past!

The Middle School & High School will operate on a two hour delay schedule on testing days for grades 6-12. Students who are testing will report at normal time to start testing at 8:10am. Students without a state test, may arrive two hours later. Bus routes continue to operate at normal times. Those MS & HS students who do not have a transportation option to arrive later may arrive at normal time and they will be supervised while other students are testing. Graduation is right around the corner, and we are excited to celebrate the Class of 2026 as they prepare to take the next step in their journey!

Commencement will be held on Sunday, May 24, from 2:00–3:00 PM at Hobart Arena, and we are proud to announce this year’s commencement speaker—Covington High School alumnus, William “Bill” Miller.

A 1987 graduate of CHS, Bill was a standout student-athlete, participating in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He continued his academic journey at Wright State and Asbury University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a double major in chemistry and biology, along with a math minor.

Driven by a desire to help others, Bill pursued a career in medicine, graduating from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and completing specialized training in orthopedic surgery and spine care. Since 2002, he has served as an orthopedic spine surgeon in western North Carolina, where his leadership helped establish a nationally recognized spine program, recently named among the top ten in the country.

Throughout his career, Bill has authored numerous publications and held several leadership roles, including Chief of Surgery and Chairman of the Board.

Bill and his wife, Maureen (Covington Class of 1988), have built a life together rooted in family and faith. They now enjoy time with their three children and three granddaughters at their home, Selah Farm, in the mountains of western North Carolina.

We are honored to welcome Bill back to Covington to inspire our graduates as they celebrate this important milestone. Go Buccs!

Covington Elementary’s Family Reading Night was a tremendous success, drawing a remarkable turnout of students and families for an evening filled with fun, laughter, and a shared love of reading.

In a perfect twist, Mother Nature joined in on the theme by delivering a light drizzle outside—setting the scene for our “It’s Raining Books!” celebration. Inside the building, however, the atmosphere was nothing but warm and bright, filled with smiling faces and the excitement of families learning and reading together.

Throughout the evening, families enjoyed a variety of creative, rainy-day themed activities. Students tried their luck at Hooks in the Rain fishing, played Drizzle Down Bingo Town, created Gratitude Cloud crafts, and cozied up for Flashlight Reading. A festive photo booth and Sprinkle Kindness crafts added even more opportunities for fun and connection.

Each student also received a free book to take home, encouraging the joy of reading to continue long after the event—and cupcakes provided a sweet ending to a wonderful night.

Events like Family Reading Night highlight the importance of literacy while strengthening the connection between school and home. They also showcase the heart of the Covington community, where families, staff, and students come together to support one another and celebrate their learning.

Thank you to our staff, dedicated volunteers, and supportive families who helped make this evening so special. It was definitely a night made for the books!
