Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS

Good afternoon DCS families, I hope this newsletter finds you well and staying warm. It has been a lovely week at DCS. Music Teacher Jackie Neilssen returned from maternity leave and we have enjoyed having her in the building. Students and staff are working hard to get the mid-year assessments completed. Today we had a visit with Dublin School students who helped some of our students work on their cross country skiing skills. It is so wonderful to see the community connections continue to grow!

Next week, we are excited to have the first Game and Puzzle Night on Thursday at 5:30-7pm. We are looking froward to seeing students and their families enjoy some time playing. We had hoped to be taking a Field Trip to the Dublin School Nordic Center, but we with the frigid temperatures predicted, we are postponing.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend, and find some time to consider the meaning of the holiday. Take care, Nicole

Kindergarten studied low and high in music. Bigger instruments have lower sounds, and smaller instruments have higher sounds! Ask your child to sing "Grandma's Glasses"!

1st and 2nd grade began learning about different rhythms within a steady beat.

Grade 3 did a lot of rhythm review with eighth notes and quarter notes. They are preparing their music reading skills for recorder!

4th and 5th graders got their recorders this week and we did a quick review from last year - they remembered a lot!

Kindergarteners have been working hard learning the difference between addition and subtraction. They're using connecting cubes to build towers and then add their tower together with another peer's tower to see how many they have in all. They're also acting out story problems to show subtraction.

We've been spending time working on writing sentences and learning about what a sentence needs- a capital letter to start, spaces between words, and punctuation. That's a lot to remember on top of remembering how to write letters and where they sit on the line!

In social studies, kindergarteners learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy and likened his work to the last words of the Pledge of Allegiance- "AND JUSTICE FOR ALL"! Students made posters to encourage others to remember MLK and his contributions to our country's history.

First and Second Graders learned all about Martin Luther King this week. Did you know his name was Michael when he was born? The students came up with their own dreams such as seeing extra kindness at DCA, being extra polite to Mr. Russell, and helping others. Second-grade math has been busy adding numbers to 1,000 using an HTO chart and the algorithm. We are finishing up opinion writing in second grade telling about our favorite season of the year and are eager to get to informative writing. Both grades continue to work hard learning and applying new phonics rules each week. They are extra careful to watch for starting their sentences with capital letters and ending with punctuation. They like to earn a "happy cop" not a grouchy cop when they do this. You'll have to ask a first or second-grader what that's all about!

The Terrific Third Graders are excited to return to school, working and learning! For Social/Emotional Learning, we read Is a Book a Box for Words? and The Reflection in Me, discussing the stories and then writing their thoughts in their journals. With The Reflection of Me, the children drew themselves and wrote adjectives to describe themselves positively. Thank you to Pam Bator for contributing the books to our classroom as a holiday gift.

For Language Arts, as a class, the children read Owl Moon for a literature study. They thought about fact vs opinion using quotes about Great Horned Owls. They listened to quotes to decide the feeling behind the idea and played a comprehension game to review the book's story elements. This week, we started Because of Winn Dixie by learning the essential vocabulary words for the first chapters. For word work - we learned the different spellings for /air/. They practiced using connecting words in sentences with a fun Mystery Writing lesson. The children worked hard on their Winter NWEA testing. For our study of Dublin, Karen Madigan, from the DPL, came up to DCS for the third graders to interview her about the Dublin Library. They used the responses to write individual paragraphs about what they learned. We continue to monitor the birds visiting our birdfeeder. For our science lesson last week, “the students gathered evidence to explain how a change to the environment can cause a particular trait to become more common in a population over time through the process of natural selection.” - MysteryScience.

4th/5th ELA - The students are busy working on vocabulary, story elements such as point of view and cause and effect, and comprehension with their group novels. Mystery Writing taught them how to form compound sentences with connecting words and reviewed the most frequently used connecting words while building their own sentences. Their word study was the different ways to write the phoneme /air/, thinking about the meanings of different homophones such as fair and fare. The class worked hard on their NWEAs. Ask your child about The Fish in a Tree,

The 4th and 5th graders have returned from the winter break rejuvenated and ready to continue to make strides in our learning!

Both 4th and 5th grade are spending lots of time learning about fractions. With models and algorithms, we have been looking at how multiplication of fractions with whole numbers works. We will be moving into addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers.

In Social Studies, the 4th graders are learning about New Hampshire's state symbols. 5th graders are doing a book study of "George vs. George: The American Revolution as Seen from Both Sides" by Rosalyn Schanzer. Both groups are creating a book with the lessons learned from their study.

Our study and fostering of the turtles has continued. Our turtles which started out between 5 - 8 grams are now between 20 - 40 grams. They are eating a more varied diet that includes their pellets, dehydrated blood worms and shrimp as well as kale and carrot peels. Miss Jamie visited again with a variety of turtle shells so that we could see a little of their internal structure as well as make comparisons between different types of turtles.

The third grade math graders have been looking at reading and writing the place value of large numbers. The next step is to add and subtract large numbers with place value and the standard algorithms.

Scholastic Book Fair is here next week! Scholastic Book Fair is here next week!

Recently, there have been numerous student requests for cough drops. As cough drops are considered medication, I am asking for your help in following the ConVal policy on medication administration at the elementary level. To do this, any medication, including cough drops, must be delivered to the school by a parent/guardian or their designated responsible adult in the original container. A written permission form is also required which is available at DCS.

Please reach out to me at pmurphy@conval.edu if you have any questions.
