GSA Middle would like to announce that Mr. Dan Hlinak is our 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year! This is Mr. Hlinak's second year with GSA Middle and he has been making a difference through his outstanding efforts in and out of the classroom. In addition to teaching 7th Grade Ancient Civilizations, he is the 7th Grade Co-Chair and Student Council Co-Sponsor. He works very hard to build strong, positive relationships with his students and he creates engaging lessons that make history come alive. Mr. Hlinak's students love that he believes in them, encourages them, and genuinely wants them to succeed. They say that he makes history easy to understand and always does his best to help them learn. Families talk about how they appreciate his kindness, that he always greets everyone with a smile, and his excellent communication, even when he has to have those tough conversations. Mr. Hlinak's colleagues love that he is such a team player who is willing to support and help wherever he is needed. Mr. Hlinak makes our GSA Middle community stronger and we could not be more proud of him! Please join us in congratulating Mr. Hlinak!

On Monday, February 3rd, Concept Schools will kick off the annual Codeathon. This is a coding marathon that students from across the network participate in. GSA Middle will be represented by 5 teams that include 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Teams will have three weeks to code a product that will provide a solution to a goal selected from the United Nations Sustainability Goals. They will use coding sites like Scratch and Code.org to build their solutions. Teams will also log their progress along the way. This year’s theme is “Code for Justice”.

Many students from the middle school will be participating in the District Science Fair at the St. Louis Science Center on February 8. In the afternoon, friends and family can come, view the projects, listen to the demonstrations by students and watch the Robotics Competition as well. Students who score high enough will then be invited to the Science Fair in Chicago.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2025 theme, "From Classrooms to Careers: STEM in Action," who showcased outstanding creativity and vision.

On Saturday, January 25th, many of our district robotics teams traveled to Park Hills, Missouri, for the annual Central Rebel Bots VEX IQ Tournament. Our teams did really well! Kermit Krafters earned the Teamwork Champion Award for being part of the top alliance at the event. Melmetal earned the Design Award for their impressive design process and display. Both teams have previously qualified for the state competition taking place in Reeds Spring, Missouri, in February. The Nerd Cluster also earned a spot in states by being awarded the Innovate Award. This award is dedicated to a team who has an innovative idea that is utilized during the competition.

On Saturday, February 8th, our 6th grade teams will compete in Kirkwood. This will be their final opportunity to qualify for a state spot. We wish them the best of luck!! Go Gators!!
