Student ID Badges (Secondary ONLY)

Student safety is a priority in McKinney ISD. In an effort to increase the safety and security of McKinney ISD secondary campuses, and to effectively identify individuals on campus, McKinney ISD requires all middle and high school students to possess a school issued student ID badge while on any District property or attending District events. Student ID badges can provide immediate identification of authorized individuals, and help district staff to quickly identify our own students.

Student ID badge checks will occur each morning as students enter the building and randomly throughout the school day.

Badges are not to be altered or edited in any way; this includes, but is not limited to:

Drawing on the badge itself (front or back)
Drawing or intentionally damaging the plastic badge holder (if applicable)
Putting stickers on the badge or plastic holder

Absolutely no sharing or giving away badges.

Any student who forgets their ID badge must get a replacement badge for a $5 fee.

For safety and security, students must present their school-issued ID badge for all after-school activities, including but not limited to athletic and fine arts events.

Each campus will provide additional information regarding the student ID badge distribution process.

McKinney ISD Secondary Devices (6-12th grades)

Secondary Device Framework

Students in grades 6-12 are assigned a MacBook Air. The device travels from home to school. Students should bring the laptop fully charged to school each day and follow the guidelines in the One to the World Student/Parent Handbook.

Annual Device Protection Plan

McKinney ISD offers an annual Device Protection Plan for $50 or $25 if the student is receiving free/reduced lunch. A deductible of $50 will be charged upon the first incident to cover accidental damage, theft, fire, water damage or vandalism. Additional incidents will be charged a deductible of $125. The Device Protection Plan does not cover deliberate damage or neglect. Students that have not paid for the Device Protection Plan will pay full price for any damage.

The Device Protection Plan can be paid online through My School Bucks via debit or credit card or to the campus bookkeeper in the form of cash or check.

Incident Fee Notification

Parents are notified through the help ticket system if their student has an incident and they owe a fee. Details about the damage are in the ticket. Parents can communicate with the technican through the ticket. Fees can be paid online through My School Bucks or by bringing a check or cash payment to the campus bookkeeper.

Student Help Desk

If a student has an issue with their laptop and they need technology assistance, they should enter a ticket via the Student Help Desk located in the SSO portal.

Lost or Stolen Devices

Lost devices should be reported to campus staff immediately. If a device is stolen, a police report will be required within 24 hours of reporting a theft of a device.

Internet Safety

All district issued devices are filtered on and off campus in compliance with federal and state law. If a student attempts to access an inappropriate site, the filtering software blocks viewing of that site.

Texas State University- Texas School Safety Center

The Texas School Safety Center is inviting parents and guardians to participate in a brief statewide survey about safe firearms storage campaigns in Texas. The information from this study will help improve future safety resources for schools and families. This project is funded by the National Institute of Justice and it is being led by the Texas School Safety Center and WestEd.

Please help the Texas School Safety Center learn more about parent perspectives on firearms storage. All responses are greatly appreciated!

Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. This information will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms.

In 2021, 4,613 Texans experienced gun-related deaths. The Texas Department of State Health Services (SHS) reports that 55% of Texas firearms deaths in 2020 were suicides and that 59% of all suicides in Texas were by firearms. Suicide attempts involving firearms have a 90% fatality rate. Restricting access to guns is critical in reducing acts of violence, whether as self-harm or towards others. Acts of mass violence and interpersonal violence often end in suicide.

It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:

● Failed to secure the firearm; or

● Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access

The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two).

Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax. Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com.

Safe gun storage is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies.

McKinney ISD

McKinney ISD Public Relations, Communications, and Support Services

Founded in 1848 to educate the children of local farmers and small business owners, McKinney schools have been a focal point of our community for over 150 years. Although the world has changed dramatically since McKinney saw its first settlers, the importance of a strong educational system that provides children with skills to be productive citizens in our society is still a priority for our community.

The McKinney Independent School District has a long-standing reputation for educational excellence, and our district is continually recognized at both the state and national levels.

McKinney ISD’s success can be attributed to the leadership of our elected Board of Trustees, the professional educators who work diligently to give every child the best education possible, and the support of our parents and community who value and set high standards for the children of MISD.
