Towson High School Newsletter
October 10, 2025
Principal's Message
Dear Towson High School Community,
Last school year, we launched three new literacy tools with the aim of fostering strong reading, writing, and speaking/listening skills across all subjects: READ Like a 5-Star General, WRITE Like a 5-Star General, and COMMUNICATE Like a 5-Star General.
For this school year, we revised the WRITE Like a 5-Star General tool to include guiding thinking questions and/or sentence frames for each phase of the writing process. This enhancement, coupled with an emphasis on writing across all subjects, demonstrates that writing is not just a way to assess learning, but a way to deepen it. Research from the science of learning shows that when students write, they actively encode and retrieve information, thus strengthening their memory and comprehension.
Please take a moment to explore our new WRITE tool and other literacy tools found in your student’s Agenda Book. Together, let's embrace these resources as we continue to work towards the vision of all members of our THS learning community thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. Together we shine!
In partnership,
Dr. Kim Culbertson

Google Additional Services Opt-Out for Students
A recent change to Google’s License Agreement requires Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) to gain parent permission for students to access certain Google Additional Services, including YouTube, Google Earth, Google Maps, Google News, and Google Translate. The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) has created a parent-facing form in Focus to allow parents to opt out of these services. The form offers two opt outs, one for YouTube (this is only applicable for Grades 6-12 as YouTube is blocked at the elementary school) and the other for the remaining services as a group. If a parent opts out of one or all of these services, the student will lose access to them automatically. A student’s access to these tools will follow them through their school career. Please use the directions in the pdf linked below to opt out of Google Additional Services.

Student Supports & Resources
Students can receive extra support afterschool via Coach Class and Peer Tutoring. Coach Class is offered by each teacher, each week. Free Peer Tutoring is offered throughout the week by students and advisors of our national honor societies. All supports begin next week unless otherwise noted. BCPS also offers all high school students with free teen therapy through Talkspace.
Attendance Matters
Research has shown that attendance is a leading predictor of academic achievement and adult success. Students who find attending school important are more likely to attain goals like attending trade school, college, or getting a job. By showing up to school every day, students develop a positive work ethic and prepare for future success by developing healthy and productive habits.
Our attendance goals this year are for students to maintain at least a 94% attendance rate and to reduce chronic absenteeism. A student that misses 10% or more of school days in chronically absent. By missing just 2 days a month, a student will be chronically absent. Use the "Attendance Tracker" and "Parent Tips" below to support your student in maintaining satisfactory attendance. Additionally, we will send parents/guardians a "Weekly Attendance Report" each Friday afternoon so you can track your student's daily and period attendance.
Absent notes must be turned in within 5 days from the student returning to school. Please review the Towson High School 2025-2026 Operating Procedures document ("Attendance" section) for information on Absent notes, including how to submit them on FOCUS. Teachers are not required to provide makeup work for unexcused absences.
