PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Friday, November 21st
Its always fun to get some time together before we head off on break and our Trimester 1 assembly today was a great way to do that! We celebrated all the amazing things we have achieved since August and got excited for all the fun things we have coming up in Trimester 2. You can watch the photo slideshow HERE! We were also treated to a musical performance from our 5th Graders! They sang a medley of songs from their upcoming show, The Wizard of Oz!
I hope you are all looking forward to a relaxing Fall Break. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates, I hope you enjoy the time with your families and loved ones.
I am excited to see everyone on Monday, December 1st!

CELL PHONE AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN SCHOOL (NEW POST!)
As we approach the holiday season and wish lists and gifts are being discussed, we wanted to share an excerpt from the Parent Handbook for your reference.
If your child receives (or already has) a smart watch or cell phone, please discuss and establish expectations with them prior to sending them to school. All devices should be turned off and left in backpacks during the school day (see AHSD25 Parent Student Handbook, Page 39 also included below).
We have been made aware of students receiving or sending messages during the school day from their watches. Please explain to your child/ren that they should reach out to their teacher, the front office, or Mrs. Klancnik, our school nurse, if they need to reach you during the day. We care about all of our students and will support them as needed while they are here at school. We also hope that any parent or guardian who needs to communicate a message to their child during the school day will call the office. Please know that your message will be passed on to your child.
We know many of our students ride their bikes and/or walk to and from school and we completely understand that having a way to communicate with your child provides you with peace of mind during these times and helps you to connect with them. Please only reach out to your child outside of school hours and please do ensure that they know how to silence or turn their device off during the school day.
Each year, following the holiday season, we have students coming in with new devices uncertain of how to silence them when they ding with alerts, alarms, and other notifications. Thank you for partnering with us on this front - it really does help minimize disruptions and ensures that students stay focused and connected with their teachers and peers throughout the day.
Recently, in addition to students communicating with parents, watches have been used to assist in solving math problems, and to communicate with peers during the school day. We have been more lenient with watches and have allowed students to wear them as long as they are not a distraction. Moving forward, we will adhere to the expectations listed in the handbook below if students are using their watches inappropriately during the school day, as this is a disruption to the learning environment. Please have a conversation with your child to ensure they are clear about the expectations. If students are using them inappropriately, they will need to remain in their backpacks throughout the day. Students should be clear with their friends, because whether they are initiating a text or receiving a text, both are considered disruptions to the learning environment and will result in watches being stored in backpacks.
From District 25 Parent Student Handbook (Page 39
The possession and use of cell phones and other electronic devices, including wearables, are subject to the following rules:
• Middle school students are expected to turn off electronics and store devices in their middle school locker during the school day.
• Elementary students are expected to leave electronics in the “off” position and in their backpacks throughout the school day.
• A supervising teacher may grant permission for them to be used or if needed during an emergency.
• They may not be used in any manner that will cause disruption to the educational environment or will otherwise violate student conduct rules.
THINK IT THROUGH BEHAVIOR REFLECTION TOOL (NEW POST!)
Dear Parents,
We wanted to share more information with you about the Big 3 at Patton. Be Safe, Be Ready, and Be Mindful!
You may have heard your children say these words or seen them in different places, including our Commons. These 3 words, Safe, Ready, and Mindful, are the same across all District 25 schools. Each school created a Behavior Matrix for the various locations in the school and what it looks like to Be Safe, Ready, and Mindful in each location, and during the activities that take place there.
We review the Behavior Matrix as a whole school at the start of the school year, after winter break, and after spring break. When we do this, the school selects a morning, and each classroom rotates through different areas of the building where the behavior expectations are reviewed. Teachers may reinforce expectations whenever they feel it is needed for their class. Expectations for special events such as assemblies and field trips are reviewed at appropriate times during the year.
When needed, reminders of expectations for the whole school may be given during morning announcements, at lunch, to a grade level, a specific classroom, a group of students, or to individual students. This can be done by any staff member as the entire school follows the same matrix and participates in the all-school behavior rotations.
What happens when students aren't following expectations?
We have a system for our tier one behavior, which is having students fill out what we call a Think it through reflection. (Primary Example and Intermediate Example) This is strictly a tool to reflect on behaviors. It does not mean that a child is in trouble. It means that a child has received several verbal reminders from an adult staff member, and they continue to exhibit the behavior that is not expected.
If this occurs, a staff member will sit down with the child to complete the reflection. Together, they would think about the behavior that is being exhibited. How can we change that behavior? How are they feeling while that behavior is happening, and how might that behavior impact or affect those around them? We will send this home once it has been filled out. You will receive an email to inform you that your child is bringing home a Think it Through form.
This is typically sent to you by the staff member that completed the form with your child, so that if you have any questions, you can pose your questions to the person who worked with your child. However, it is important to know that when this comes home, our intention is for you to look at the form with your child and discuss what happened. Ask them to share what they discussed with the staff member regarding how they can change their behavior, and ensure they understand the expectations we would like them to follow. Following your conversation, please sign the form at the bottom, and send it back to school. This lets us know that you were able to have that conversation at home and reinforce school expectations. Then, we move on because every day is a new day.
We greatly appreciate your ongoing partnership and support to help Patton be a place where all Panthers can enjoy learning and growing.
MAP TESTING (NEW POST!)
MAP Testing will take place as soon as we return from Fall Break at Patton for all of our students in grades K-5. Classroom teachers will share specific testing schedules for both reading and math. We appreciate your cooperation in limiting appointments during identified testing times.
5th GRADE MIXER EVENT (NEW POST!)
AHC PTA is organizing a series of "mixers" for incoming Middle School students (current 5th graders) to provide the opportunity for them to meet and get to know their future classmates.
The first event will take place on Sunday, January 4th at South Middle School. Please see the flyer for more information!
PATTON SPREADS JOY (NEW POST!)
We are eagerly looking forward to this event on Friday, December 5th! This is always such a wonderful event and I hope many of you can attend!
This event is solely sponsored by the PTA. School staff might not be present and have no responsibility for the event. Please direct all inquiries or concerns to the sponsoring PTA. This is not a drop-off event.
LMC TRIMESTER 1 SLIDESHOW (NEW POST!)
HEAVENLY HATS UPDATE (NEW POST!)
We received a lovely letter, certificate and ribbon from the Heavenly Hats Foundation thanking us for our most recent donation of $469.14.
This is always such a wonderful cause to support and I am so grateful for the generosity of our community.
VETERAN'S DAY CELEBRATIONS (2nd POST!)
We were honored to have 11 Veterans and their families join us in honor of Veterans Day on Tuesday, November 11th. One of our current parents, Mr. John Healy, a 10 yr Veteran of the US Army and still serving in the Reserves, spoke to our Panthers about what it means to serve your country, be a veteran, and appreciating the things that make our country great. We were so grateful for his time and the insights he shared.
Our Patton Cub Scouts Pack 269 performed a flag ceremony, our 4th and 5th graders performed 2 meaningful patriotic songs, and we were introduced to our Veteran guests of honor by their Patton family members.
It was a wonderful assembly and we were so grateful to be able to honor those in our community who have served and show our appreciation to them. Please click HERE to view a slideshow of all our veteran community members.
COLD WEATHER RECESS (2nd POST!)
Please be mindful that students will go out for recess every day as long as the wind chill is above zero and it is not raining. Please ensure your Panthers come to school dressed for the weather. If there is snow on the ground, students will not be able to play on the field or the playground unless they are wearing snow pants, boots, a coat and gloves/mittens. They will need to remain on the blacktop only if they do not have appropriate snow gear. Gloves and hats are important when the weather is cold even if students choose not to bring boots and snow pants.
Students are encouraged to bring in a bag of snow gear each day "just in case" - this also helps minimize any classroom disruptions with items being dropped off after school has started. Please ensure all items are labeled clearly so we can reunite any lost gloves/hats/boots with their owners. You would be surprised how many stray items are found. Our lost and found is already overflowing again!
It is important to have students bring their snow gear bags home with them over the weekend so clothes can be washed and dried and "refreshed" for the following week! Snow gear does not fully dry when left in the bag.
When it comes to snow gear bags, please watch your child pack the bag at home. When a parent packs it, they are able to fold things nicely and fit everything in a compact bag. When kids try to put their snow gear back into the small bag, they often find it challenging. Sometimes, a slightly larger reusable shopping bag with a large opening helps kids keep track of all their gear.
Thank you so much for working with us on this front, it is hugely appreciated!
