Alder Weekly Update
June 04, 2023
Greetings,
Another great week here at Alder! What an awesome feeling! Teachers continue to have great learning experiences for our children!
On Tuesday, we were very busy! Ms. Wood arranged to have a number of antique cars on the property and their owners shared with our social studies classes information about their cars. This went along with the curriculum and students enjoyed learning about progress! Mr. LaSala brought back a special guest who hasn’t been here since before covid. This gentleman shared with our students stories from the Holocaust. Again, relating to the social studies curriculum. What a great experience!
Other news, we had seventh grader Bryan Martinez design a t shirt in Ms. Zompa’s Entrepreneurship class for the school store. He won the contest and his design will be on shirts for purchase in our school store!
Three of our 8th grade students were present at the academic excellence luncheon with other middle school and High School students from the county. Being recognized were, Destiny, Kaitlyn, and Priscilla.
Also on Tuesday, Ms. Cunningham (Soon to be New Principal) and Assistant Principal, Ms. Feld, welcomed our incoming 6th grade students and parents for a tour and information about our school. The turn out was wonderful! Our Junior NHS took students and parents on tour.
Our 8th grade had a bit of a disappointment on Thursday with their trip having to be canceled due to air quality. However it was rescheduled for Friday and what a great day! Pictures to come next week!
In the home stretch now. One more full week of school until summer break.
Until next week, have a wonderful weekend! Stay safe, be well, continue to dream of the possibilities ahead of us, be happy and smile at someone!
Ms. Connor
Congratulations Bryan!
In Mr. Zompa's Entrepreneurship Class, students learned how to design logos using Adobe Express. The students were tasked with designing a logo for the Alder School Store.
7th Grader Bryan Martinez won the contest!
The shirts will be going on sale at the Alder School Store.

Academic Excellence Recipients
Congratulations to all students who were invited to the Academic Luncheon at the Carriage House for their academic achievements. Special shout out to our three Alder students in attendance, Destiny, Kaitlyn, and Priscilla. We are so proud of you all!
Endangered Species Project
Mrs. DelGaizo's students let their creativity speak for itself
during their endangered species project!

Story of a Holocaust survivor
Students had the privilege of listening to the story of Jeff Zeigler's father, Shelley Zeigler, a Holocaust survivor, who lay in a hole that was 6 feet deep and 8 feet wide with his family for 18 months until the war was over. His story was informative and inspiring - our students' lives have been touched by his legacy.

Car Show
Alder Avenue held it's first car show since 2019 with the help of The Jersey Cape Region Antique Automobile Club of America! The students enjoyed seeing cars they learned about in the 20th century come to life. The students had to interact with the car owners and learn about it's safety features and modifications through the different decades. Thank you Mrs. Wood for coordinating this wonderful experience for our students!

Jazz Day
Alder joined Fernwood Middle School in our first annual Jazz Day, led by EHTHS Jazz Band director Dave Milnes. Our students were introduced to a new genre of music, jazz, and learned skills in order to put a piece of jazz together. Students were encouraged to improvise solos- and many kids from Alder took advantage of that, stepped out of their comfort zone, and were musical stars!

Sharing Knowledge
The Alder Orchestra was visited by professional cellist Dr. Leonard for
masterclasses and lessons this week!

Teacher Features
Mrs. Fager - ELL Teacher
What is your position at Alder? What brought you here? How long have you been here?
I am the ELL teacher at Alder, which means I teach English to speakers of other languages. I originally come from San Juan, Argentina. I graduated there as an ESL teacher. When I first came to the US, I worked as a substitute in other districts like Stafford and Lakewood while I waited for my certification. But when I saw the opportunity at Alder, I immediately took it. I had heard wonderful things about EHT. I started working here at the beginning of 2021, and have been here for two and a half years.
What is or has been one of your favorite things about Alder?
My favorite things at Alder are my students. I love seeing them grow and overcome the obstacles of learning a new language.
What do you think will be your greatest challenge this year?
My greatest challenge this year (and every year!) was working with students that had very different language proficiency in the same class.
Where did you go to school? What degree did you earn?
I went to the National University of San Juan, Argentina. I graduated with a master’s in Teaching English as a second language.
Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
Most people don’t know this about me: I am half German and half Lebanese. My grandparents emigrated from their countries to Argentina when they were young. So I grew up in a very multicultural family. Also, besides Spanish and English, I can speak German!
Mrs. Dirkes - 7th Grade Math Teacher
What is your position at Alder? What brought you here? How long have you been here?
I teach 7th Grade Math on the Purple Team and I’ve been here for 7 ½ years. I taught in another district for 7 years before I made my move here to Alder.
What is or has been one of your favorite things about Alder?
One favorite thing about Alder is being surrounded by so many wonderful and supportive colleagues that truly have become great friends. Another favorite thing is watching my students grow and thrive over the course of a school year.
What do you think will be your greatest challenge this year?
FRACTIONS, FRACTIONS, FRACTIONS!!!!!!!
I hope my students leave 7th grade not being so afraid of them.
Where did you go to school? What degree did you earn?
I actually have two degrees. I earned a BBA from Pace University in New York majoring in Public Accounting and a BA from Stockton University majoring in Education.
Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
Growing up, I spent the summers on Schroon Lake in a cabin my dad built in upstate New York. My parents, brothers and I would leave Brooklyn (where I grew up), to go there the day after school ended in June and come back the night before school started in September. I learned how to drive a boat, sail, waterski, and clean and cook fish I caught in the lake. To this day I go back every summer with my own family and enjoy watching my children do the same things I did. Schroon Lake is truly my favorite place to be.
