BHMS Weekly Update

April 16, 2026
From "Dust Bowl" to Student Sanctuary: The New BHMS Courtyard is Open!
Say goodbye to the "Dust Bowl" and hello to a vibrant new space for our Bulldogs! We officially celebrated and opened the space this week with a ribbon-cutting of the renovated courtyard at Beacon Hill Middle School. This transformation is more than just a physical upgrade; it provides a dedicated environment for vital student "brain breaks"—a key component of our commitment to ensuring every student feels Seen, Supported, and Successful.
This project was a true community effort, highlighting student voice and leadership. BHMS PACK students Michael Philipsborn and Lydia Robillard played a pivotal role, assisting in the selection of the synthetic turf and providing direct feedback to the Advanced Sports Group (ASG) throughout construction.
The ceremony was attended by BHMS staff, including Principal Alexis Glenn, Superintendent Dr. Gyimah Whitaker, and Board leadership, alongside the teams from ASG and Breedlove Land Planning. We are thrilled to provide our students with this safe, enjoyable space to unwind, recharge, and return to their studies with renewed energy!
GMAS Begins Monday!
As we look ahead to Monday, we are entering an important season of reflection and growth. The Georgia Milestones (GMAS) and our End-of-Year Universal Screeners are not just tests; they are opportunities for our students to showcase the incredible hard work they have put in all year. Our goal is to ensure every Bulldog feels Seen, Supported, and Successful throughout this window.
To help our students perform their best, we’ve compiled a few essential tips for a smooth and confident testing week.
1. Tech Readiness: The "Charge & Refresh" Routine Your student’s Chromebook is an important tool this week. Please help them with the following each night:
Plug It In: Ensure the device is charged to 100% overnight.
The "Fresh Start": Have your student clear their browser cache and cookies. This prevents technical glitches during the login process.
2. Rest & Fuel A focused mind starts with a rested body. Encourage a consistent bedtime this weekend and throughout the week. A nutritious breakfast will also provide the sustained energy needed for long periods of concentration.
3. Timely Arrivals Punctuality is key to reducing testing anxiety. Please ensure students arrive at school by 8:30 AM. This allows them to participate in morning entry procedures calmly and settle into their testing environment without feeling rushed.
We know our students are ready. We encourage them to take a deep breath, read each question carefully, and simply do their best. We are already so proud of their progress!

Highlights & Horizons
BHMS Ambassadors Welcome Future Bulldogs
Our Student Ambassadors have been hard at work ensuring a warm and seamless transition for our newest community members. Recently, the team has been busy welcoming parents and students from FAVE and Talley who will be joining the Bulldog family as 6th graders next year.
Under the leadership of our counselors Ms. Hudson and Mr. Muse, these student leaders did an outstanding job providing authentic insight into life at BHMS. From leading campus tours to sharing firsthand experiences about our school culture, the Ambassadors ensure that every incoming family feels Seen, Supported, and Successful from day one.
This commitment to leadership was also recently featured on Beacon Hill News, where the Ambassadors were recognized for their role in bridging the gap between staff and students while fostering a culture of inclusion. Whether they are welcoming new faces or representing BHMS in the community, our Ambassadors continue to exemplify excellence and service. Thank you Ms. Hudson and Mr. Muse for providing this opportunity for students to lead!

Creative Excellence: A Shout-Out to Our BHMS Art Team!
A massive congratulations to our incredible art educators—Ms. Crockett, Ms. Nathaniel, and Ms. Boswell—for their instrumental leadership in this year’s CSD Art Show. Their dedication and vision helped transform the exhibit into a vibrant celebration of student creativity.
The event was a resounding success, not only as a gallery of talent but as a fundraiser for the Decatur Education Foundation’s (DEF) "Zara’s Fund." While the community marveled at the diverse K-12 talent on display, we must admit—we are a little partial to our BHMS Bulldogs’ masterpieces!
Celebrating BHMS Debate Team
We are so proud of our students for their outstanding performance at the Atlanta Urban Debate League (AUDL) Middle School Championship, held at Hopewell Middle School!
Throughout the season, our debaters partnered with Emory University and engaged in thoughtful, high-level discussions on this year’s topic: Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), specifically exploring the benefits and challenges of implementing this technology in the Arctic Circle.
Students debated both sides of this complex issue, sharpening their critical thinking, research, and public speaking skills all season long, and their hard work truly paid off!

HONOR OUR WORLD-CLASS STAFF
The PTA is preparing to celebrate National Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week (May 4 through May 8) and is seeking donations to provide every BHMS staff member a gift card in the amount of $100. We recognize that the current financial climate is challenging for many of our families, so we ask that you consider donating any amount that fits your budget. All donations help us reach our goal and to celebrate the amazing teachers and staff who make BHMS such a special place. Thank you for your continued generosity and support. We couldn’t do this without you!
