Back-to-school
Welcome to the 2026–2027 School Year at AMSA!
Dear AMSA Students and Families,
It is with incredible excitement and pride that I write to you as the new Principal of Anoka Middle School for the Arts. Whether you are entering AMSA as a 6th grader taking your first big step into middle school, or returning as a 7th or 8th grader ready to lead, I am honored to welcome you to what promises to be a fantastic school year. Our teachers, support staff, and administrative team have been working hard all summer to prepare an exciting, supportive, and engaging environment, and we are all thrilled to have you back in our hallways.
Middle school is a pivotal time in a student’s academic journey. This year, we are focused on three major goals to support our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders:
Build High School Readiness: We prepare students for the future by strengthening critical thinking, study strategies, self-advocacy, and collaboration—giving them a solid foundation for high school and beyond.
Cultivate Self-Discipline: We help students establish strong habits by mastering time management, taking ownership of their daily choices, and developing the independence needed to thrive inside and outside the classroom.
Ensure Academic Preparedness: Before the school year begins, please check the official school supply list. A 2-inch binder is required for all students across both campuses to help our Cyclones stay organized and successful from day one.
We are honored to partner with you to make these middle school years meaningful and successful. Thank you for being an essential part of our community. Let’s make it a fantastic year!
Warmly,
Chris Nelson, Principal, on behalf of the entire AMSA Staff and Team.

Volunteers are a very important part of our school community, we will continue to work to support volunteer needs in our buildings and process volunteer applications in accordance with district risk management procedures. There will be volunteer opportunities on the first days of school.
Take a minute and complete Anoka MS for the Arts Volunteer Application for this school year and check out the Current Volunteer Opportunities at AMSA. (Keep checking this space). Filling out your forms does not commit you to volunteering, it only puts you on the list to receive event information.
Our immediate needs are:
- Open House on September 1st from 4:30 to 7:30 at both campuses.
- First day of school- both campuses, 8:00 am to 3:15 pm (various shifts). Help students in hallways finding classrooms, opening lockers, reading schedules, help with picture day lines, etc.
- First Week Help in cafeteria 11:15 am to 1:20 pm. Serve food or help students navigate the cafeteria procedure.
- First Month Collect tickets from students and hand out prizes for our fall fundraiser.
An email with the sign-ups for these events will be sent out to the people who have their volunteer forms filled out in late August. if you have general questions about volunteering or need assistance with the volunteer paperwork.
