Tidbits from the President Tidbits from the President

Yesterday, I worked in the garden while enjoying the beautiful weather. Today, it is cloudy, rainy, and cold so I am in my sewing room, working on a quilt. I really do like Texas Spring. The weather seems to give you everything in one week! I hope you get to enjoy the perfect weather for inside and outside pursuits.

I love to paper piece (the engineer in me) so I am looking forward to Deb Atchison as this month’s presenter (check out the program section). I am also hoping to have an NTQF 2025 T-shirt to show you at the meeting (check out the NTQF section). Remember to look over the entry rules & instructions (in the NTQF section). There are new categories and Molly can answer questions at the meeting.

BEES BEES

Embroidery Bee

We have moved our meeting time and place to 11 am on the last Thursday of the month at Hollis Threads. There will be a $5 per person room usage fee.

We had our first Meeting at Hollis Threads in February and enjoyed the store's hospitality and the opportunity to shop. The March meeting will be on March 27. We will be discussing Embrilliance software. Feel free to bring your laptop or tablet if you have Embrilliance installed.

Contact Wanda Edmunds or Sarah Tutt for more information. Or feel free to just drop in.

Frayed Knots

We had a baked potato bar in February and enjoyed seeing everyone's work. Our March meeting will be after the newsletter is published.

Tight Knots

March Bee Meeting

This month's meeting was hosted by Chris Tomich. We talked about our families and generally caught up with each other. Show and Tell started with Chris Tomich giving Grace Stroud hot pads for the quilt booth at the quilt show. Chris also made heart blocks and 9 patch squares for Hearts quilts. Chris has been very busy; she also had seven quilts for JPS. Some were wheelchair quilts and the rest were baby quilts. Margo Grunseich has already finished her NICU quilt for this year's November meeting. Cecilia Villa had finished quilting Grace Stroud's Quilt of Valor. Grace Stroud Showed a St. Patrick's wall hanging and a stained glass rose wall hanging. Judi Janes has finished her son's baseball quilt and showed the wonderful material she bought for the back (also baseball fabric). Cheri Bigham made a baby quilt and some fun items from men's silk ties. Cheri showed Mug organizers, market bags, scissor covers, skillet handle holders, glass cases, and checkbook covers. All of these items were made from men's ties, they were beautiful. After Show and Tell, Chris served cheesecake and chocolate. A fast game of LRC ended with Cheri taking home all our yellow fat quarters and her purple birthday fabric.

Start a BEE Start a BEE

One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!

General Guidelines

  • Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
  • A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
  • Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
  • Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
  • Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.

Retreat 2025 Retreat 2025

Retreat final payments are due at the March meeting. If you believe you signed up for retreat and have not received a balance due email from Shelley, please contact me by phone or at the March meeting.

Quilts of Valor Quilts of Valor

Please join us honoring three veterans who will receive their Quilts of Valor on Sunday, March 16th, at 3PM. The ceremony will be held at Hollis Threads Quilt Shop, 3980 Boat Club Rd. Lake Worth, TX 76135.

I’ve attached a picture of a quilt made from the log cabin blocks made by the members who attended the sew day at the Berry Patch. Great job ladies!

More kits and information will be available for members to pick up at the March meeting. If you are a new member and have any questions about Quilts of Valor, how to nominate a service member or veteran, please see me at the meeting or give me a call and I’ll be happy to help.

Lovies Lovies

Lovies are used for preemie babies and their mother's so they can become familiar with each other's scent.

If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.

Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Harris Downtown for their NICU unit.

JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items) JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)

We encourage each member to read the information below just to refresh your memory about all the items you can make for JPS. It’s not just NICU quilts. They love to get baby quilts of all sizes. The NICU quilts can’t contain flannel, but other quilts can. A new item added to the list is a wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Our donations are really appreciated by JPS, the moms, and any other patients who receive them.

NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts

One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts -NO Flannel. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.

JPS has also requested other items for their patients:

Baby Items:

Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes

Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”

Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long

9 inches – circumference for small

11 inches – circumference for large

CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com

Adult Items:

These items are mainly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy at the JPS cancer center and geriatric patients.

Adult quilts or blankets (quilted or fleece)

Wheelchair quilt (approximately 36 x 48).

Ostomy bag covers

Small heart-shaped pillows for breast cancer patients to place under their arms after surgery

More information on these is on the following website:

After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text, JPG or JPEG pictures. We can attach PDF, Word, and XL documents to the newsletter, but they will appear as links and the reader must download them to their device to read them (easier if done from a laptop/desktop). DOC files that contain text only will be copied into the newsletter, but some of the formatting may be lost.

I would like to share pictures of show-and-tell items, but we must have someone willing to take pictures and email them to the guild email address.
