The Howler
1/30
Welcome to Grant Watts!
First graders at Grant Watts are busy learning about nouns and building their very own "Noun Towns". This is one of our favorite projects of the year, which combines literacy, social studies, and art. Students get to show their knowledge through a creative, cooperative, and fun activity.

Conferences
Fall conferences are just around the corner, and we love the opportunity to connect with families to share their child's progress so far this year. It really does take a village, and we appreciate the strong partnerships we share with with families. Working together is the best way to set up our learners for success at school.
Teachers will be sending out conference sign-ups, so be on the look out, and we hope to see as many families as possible.
Monday, November 9 (no school)
8 am-8 pm Conferences will take place in person at Grant Watts
Tuesday, November 10 (no school)
8:00 am-8 pm Conferences held virtually (some teachers may choose to meet in-person)
Respectfully,
Principal Small

Birthdays
We love to celebrate students in a way that allows student learning to continue, and does not disrupt the academic environment. Please check with individual teachers for their classroom policies, and communicate with them if you are planning to bring in something to share with classmates, as there may be food allergies among students. Food needs to be store bought, and preferably small and easily distributed. We appreciate healthy treats, and will likely save any sugary snacks for the moments just prior to dismissal. Parties, excessive treats, and balloons are not allowed at school. Please note this is purely optional and NOT a requirement.
We will not distribute birthday party invitations unless each student in the class receives one.

Bus drivers rely on students to listen to and follow their directions when taking the bus to and from school. Doing so helps keep everyone safe, and makes the bus a more enjoyable experience. Families can help reinforce this expectation at home! Students benefit from consistent messages from school to home. Some things to talk with your child about and even practice together at home are:
- Listening the first time and not talking while an adult is talking.
- Knowing and following the bus rules.
- Entering and exiting the bus safely.
- Asking questions only when the bus is stopped and not arguing with the driver.
Thank you for supporting safe transportation for your student and their peers!
Let me know if you have questions or if I can help with bus concerns.

Lego Reading Room
Greetings! My name is Megan Moga, and I am the reading specialist here at Grant Watts Elementary. My primary role is to work with students who may need support in academic areas. Recently, my team and I have been assessing students and getting to know their strengths and areas of need. If you are curious about how your student performed, please email me at the address below.
We have also officially moved into the modular building and started reading groups. We are off to a great start!
Happy reading,
Megan Moga

Library News from Mrs. Migliorini
It’s that time, Grant Watts… the Book Fair begins on Monday! We’ll kick off the fair with Family Night on Monday from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Bring the whole family to shop the fair and participate in some special Family Night giveaways! Starting on Tuesday, the students will have the opportunity to shop during their class’ regular library visit and at recess each day. You can visit our Book Fair homepage now to preview the fair, shop online, or set up an ewallet for cash-free shopping. (Pro tip: share your student’s ewallet with faraway family & friends so they can share fair $$ with your student!) Remember, we need your help to make the Book Fair a success. You can sign up to volunteer* at bit.ly/GWEfairvol and earn $5 to shop the fair. You can also donate money to GWE’s Share the Fair campaign and help students in need to purchase a forever book. *Fair volunteers must have a completed background check with SSD.

Small Group Counseling Opportunities
We will begin reviewing our Social Emotional Screening Results and forming small groups. The classroom teachers at Grant Watts complete a screener for each of their students using SAEBRS (Social, Academic, Emotional Behavior Risk Scale). If your child is selected to participate in a small group, information slips and group descriptions will be sent home. If you feel your child has a need for additional support in the areas of social skills, self esteem, school skills, or worries-please feel free to send me an email or contact me with your concern.
PLEASE, feel free to reach out to us anytime; 971-200-8002-or email Tami McDonald tmcdonald@scappoose.k12.or.us or Rachelle Top rtop@scappoose.k12.or.us

New this year, we will be joined by Scappoose Rural Fire Department and Scappoose Police Department, who will have a few vehicles out front for a Trunk or Treat!
Volunteers Needed! We can only make this event happen with the help of our amazing volunteers who run the games and activities; It takes nearly 100 throughout the evening! Times are spaced out so that you are able to run a game and enjoy the event with your family. This is also a great opportunity for middle school students, high school students, grandparents, extended family, and community members! Please Sign Up here and pass it on!
