Martinsburg Police Department Issues Safety Warning Regarding Orbeez and Airsoft Gun Incidents

The Martinsburg Police Department has recently responded to multiple incidents involving individuals using Orbeez-style toy guns and airsoft guns to target people and property throughout the community. While often marketed as toys, both types of guns are capable of causing severe bruising, painful injuries, and property damage when used irresponsibly.

Let us be clear: this is criminal behavior. Firing these guns at others or at property is not harmless — it is classified as a criminal offense. Also concerning is the risk of retaliatory violence by individuals who feel threatened or attacked. These situations can escalate quickly and dangerously.

We are asking parents, guardians, and teachers to speak with children and teens about the very real consequences of these actions. What may be intended as a prank can result in legal charges for both the child and the parent, as well as injuries and escalated confrontations.

The Martinsburg Police Department is committed to protecting our community. We will respond accordingly to any reports involving the misuse of these devices.

If you witness anyone using these types of guns inappropriately, please report the incident immediately.

Let’s work together to keep Martinsburg safe.
