KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
This first week of February has been fantastic! We’ve been busy from kindergarten through fifth grade.
On Wednesday the Northwood SGC met and reviewed a number of topics: Strategic Action Plan update, upcoming candidate declarations and elections, and the budget for next school year. We also had a visit from our Media Specialist, Mrs. Bauer who shared with the group some of the media resources available to all students via Classlink. She shared a graphic which we’ve attached below to show additional ways our students can be connected to texts and foster a love of reading. Also on Wednesday, I was able to share the story, The Yellow Bus, with the whole school for World Read Aloud Day.
We celebrated our students who participated in the PTA Reflections Contest. This year's theme is "I Belong." Each participant received a certificate and an art journal to use as they continue their artistic pursuits. Please read below for a note from PTA.
This week we highlighted our amazing school counselor, Mrs. Weeks. Her kindness, expertise, and unwavering support help every student feel valued, supported, and capable of success. We thank her for guiding our Explorers with care. Her impact is endless!
Parent Survey Update – we’ve only reached 14% of the required survey participation rate, so we still need more respondents. Please help our amazing school reach the goal! Northwood Elementary Family CCRPI Survey
Fondly,
Heather Rucker, principal
KINDERGARTEN EXPLORERS
Kindergarten has been working hard on their opinion writing. The students are given a topic, and they form their opinion. Then, we use the AVID strategy, Philosophical Chairs, to practice coming up with arguments to support our opinion. Students must listen to each other’s opinions and arguments. Throughout the Philosophical Chairs activity, students can change sides (their opinion) if they are convinced otherwise. After students have formed opinions, and discussed supporting reasons, students then go back to their seats to write their opinion and at least one reason to support their opinion. Our students are ROCKING opinion writing. We are so proud of the kindergarteners. Their writing blows us away every day!
FIRST GRADE EXPLORERS
First grade had so much fun learning about severe weather - especially with the recent extreme cold weather. Timing was great for the students to do a snowstorm in a jar experiment to see what happens when there is a blizzard. We love doing hands-on learning with science!
JANUARY PBIS CELEBRATION: COSMIC BOWLING FUN!
To kick off the new year, students in grades K–5 enjoyed an out-of-this-world PBIS celebration with Cosmic Bowling in the gym! Each grade level had their own special time to bowl with friends under glowing lights and upbeat, fun music. Students didn’t just bowl—they danced, sang, cheered each other on, and celebrated the positive choices they’ve been making each day. It was a bright and joyful way to recognize their hard work in demonstrating our school expectations!
PTA REFLECTIONS
We are thrilled to celebrate the creative works of this year’s Reflection Explorers. This year’s theme, "I Belong," brought out some amazing works from our students. Artwork will be on display for the month of February.

NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK
We would like to send our love and appreciation to Northwood's amazing school counselor, Mrs. Jennifer Weeks. Her dedication to our students, families, staff and the entire Northwood community is evident in all that she does. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Weeks at Northwood and celebrate her today and all throughout the year!
VALENTINE'S DAY MESSAGE FROM FCS
Dear Parents or Guardians,
As we approach Valentine’s Day, it is important to ensure that all homemade candy, desserts, baked goods, or other edible items are not to be sold or distributed during school hours, and that appropriate store-bought items are delivered to the administration. Please know that taking this measure will help us maintain a safe environment for all students with allergies, etc. You can help us protect your student(s) by requesting that they not eat anything given to them by another person, anything that they have not brought from your home or anything not in its original sealed package. Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping all of our students safe at school!

CLINIC NEWS AND NEEDS
DISTRICT HEALTH SERVICES: INFLUENZA UPDATE
According to the most recent Department of Public Health Statement regarding influenza:
"Flu activity is widespread and severe in Georgia, and cases are likely to increase following the holidays and as Georgians return to work and school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also projects a severe flu season. If you have not gotten a flu shot yet and have no medical conditions preventing you from doing so, the Department of Public Health strongly urges you to take advantage of the health benefits the flu vaccine provides as soon as possible."
We are seeing an increase in confirmed flu cases throughout out building, consistent with what we are seeing across the state. Please read through the attached document. Our teachers will continue to prioritize hand washing and classroom cleaning. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
CLOTHING DONATIONS
Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes. We appreciate donations of all clothing sizes, and are currently in need of girls bottoms - all sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk. Thank you!
AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week's AVID goal is: to answer all written questions with a complete sentence.
CAFETERIA NEWS
NEW CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
This year, with the new lunch system, our school community has the capability to create a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account would be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!
Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Ms. Cristhal Austin, our cafeteria manager in training, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Ms. Austin, austinc4@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.

COMMUNITY AND CLUSTER NEWS
BATTLE OF THE BRIDGES: HAYNES VS HOLCOMB
We are excited to start a new tradition for our community, "Battle of the Bridges." Haynes Bridge and Holcomb Bridge will play their final basketball game at Centennial HS on Wednesday, February 11th, at 6:30 pm (new time). The Girls Team will begin at 6:30 pm and the Boys Team will play after. Each game typically lasts an hour.
Guests may park by the stadium and enter at the gym lobby doors. Entrance for guests will begin at 6:15 pm. There will be a donation box for admission (pay what you choose/can-cash only) that will be split between Haynes and Holcomb to support the athletic programs for each school. There will be concessions sold--please bring cash.
Both schools will have a pep/cheer squad, and a pep band present and performing. We are looking forward to a successful community event. All families are welcome and we hope to see you there.
Centennial has been gracious in hosting this for us. We ask for everyone to be their best, to supervise the students that you bring (there are no drop-offs), and to clean up your area before you leave.
