School Safety Drill Sept. 12

We will be doing our annual School Safety Drill on Friday, September 12th. A letter was sent home to families on Friday, September 5th, explaining more about this drill. Below, you can find additional information on our school safety procedures. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Barttelt.

  • School Safety Drills (Intruder drills)
    • Evacuation/Lockdown education and drills
    • We use a book by author Julie Cook to share this information in a child-friendly way
    • School personnel have been trained in A.L.I.C.E
    • SASD leadership has worked to learn and understand a reunification protocol that would support student, staff, and parent needs in the event of an evacuation.

Wisconsin ACT 20

What is Act 20?

Wisconsin’s Act 20 was designed to enhance reading proficiency among students in grades 4K-3. The goal is to ensure that all children are reading at or above grade level by the end of third grade. Recognizing the critical importance of early literacy, this act implements specific measures to support our students in achieving this goal.

Key Requirements of Act 20

1. Early Literacy Screening: Schools are required to conduct screenings for early literacy skills in the early elementary grades. This helps us identify students who may need additional support early in their educational journey. Fall screening will start September 8.

2. Personalized Reading Plans: For students who demonstrate reading difficulties, schools are required to develop a Personalized Reading Plan (PRP). This plan will include specific goals, strategies, and interventions tailored to meet each child's unique needs. It is a collaborative effort involving teachers, parents, and, of course, the students themselves.

3. Regular Progress Monitoring: The act mandates regular progress monitoring to track the effectiveness of interventions and adjust them as necessary. This ensures that each student receives the support they need to improve their reading skills.

4. Family Involvement: Act 20 emphasizes the importance of family engagement in a child’s literacy development. Schools will provide resources and strategies for parents to support reading at home, fostering a strong home-school connection.

5. Professional Development for Educators: To implement these requirements effectively, educators will receive training on best practices in literacy instruction and intervention strategies. This professional development ensures that our teachers are equipped with the latest tools and knowledge to support our students.

Parents will be notified via email if their child qualifies for a personalized reading plan. You will be able to access their assessment and progress monitoring data using NextPath. Click here to view the parent letter that was sent out on 9/5. If you have additional questions, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Use the Crosswalk

With a week under our belt, the biggest hiccup in the parking lot is families not using the crosswalk. It is essential, even if it means taking an extra step, that everyone uses the crosswalk. It is there for safety! When individuals cross the parking lot to the sidewalk at different areas, cars are not expecting you and may have to slam on their brakes, which could cause an accident. Let's set a good example for our students by consistently following the expectations.
