Your Connection to Facilities News and Updates in the Avon Lake City Schools
Approximately 700,000 square feet of academic facilities. 200 acres of land. One goal: Support an "ALite" education for each student in the Avon Lake City School District, and help students prepare for an evolving world.
What's going on in our schools from a facilities and support staff standpoint? What projects are we working on in the Operations Department? We publish this quarterly newsletter to celebrate success, share challenges, and help our community stay informed about the facilities of the Avon Lake City Schools.
Building ALegacy
Avon Lake Middle School Construction is Underway
Following the June groundbreaking, site work began for the brand new, 128,000 square foot, grades 5-8 Avon Lake Middle School, which will be located directly behind the current Learwood Middle School building. This is a very exciting time for the District and for the community.
Here are just a few of the activities taking place during the sitework phase:
- Weekly progress meetings between the District, the architects, the construction firm, and the City of Avon Lake.
- Site clearing, grading, and earthwork, including proof rolls and any applicable soil remediation work (so far, everything looks good!)
- Site utility prep, which has required coordination with the City, FirstEnergy, Columbia Gas, and Avon Lake Regional Water. Their expertise has been invaluable.
- Preparing to secure the site (e.g. entrances/exits, fencing, etc.) - site fencing is scheduled to go up on August 4th.
- Continuing design conversations for the new building; environmental studies to start preparing to abate and demolish the old building.
Pardon Our Dust: We're Renovating!
Top to Bottom, We're Securing Another Generation for Our Elementary Schools
Following this first round of roof renovations, it is anticipated that the scope for the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) upgrades will be completed this fall, with the work being completed as feasible over the next few years. Renovating older buildings with major mechanical work, especially buildings from different eras, is tricky, and the architects and engineers are working hard to develop the plan.
The roofing work is progressing on schedule (Westview is pictured at right), and most of the work is slated to be completed by the first day of school. Some finish work/metals is likely during the first weeks of school, but is scheduled to wrap up by Labor Day.
Heavy Traffic
Plan Ahead - City and District Projects/Events will Impact Travel Patterns this Fall
City Project: Electric Boulevard
The City of Avon Lake is completing a major culvert project on Electric Boulevard, just west of Rt. 83 (Avon-Belden Rd.). The work is scheduled to be completed by early to mid-September, so "The Game" between Avon Lake and Avon (Week 9 - October 16th) shouldn't be affected, but high school traffic will be, for a few weeks. Please leave extra time when traveling to or from the high school, and please be extra mindful of school zones and young drivers/bike riders/pedestrians, etc. during this time.Avon Lake v. South (10/16/26)
Speaking of "The Game" between your Shoremen football team and those birds to the south, we will be hosting this year! We ask that attendees walk, ride bikes, or carpool to the game, if possible. If driving, please observe all signage and do not park in the traffic circles on the north or south sides of the campus, in case there is an emergency. Overflow parking lots have been traditionally available near the high school campus, and will be published as we get closer to a historically well-attended contest between fierce, but respectful, rivals.
Learwood Construction
At Learwood, parent drop-off traffic may need to follow a slightly adjusted route at the MPR entrance - the building will be in touch with families closer to the start of the school year. All are encouraged to exercise caution on the campus, especially when driving, as it will be an active construction site for the next two years.
The Learwood Stadium and NW soccer fields will be accessible during construction, but all attendees must use the path to the north of the construction trailer(s). The only stadium access for the next two years will be through the gate on the north end of the stadium/track.
THANK YOU!
Patience and flexibility are the watchwords this fall and throughout the various construction projects. It will not always be easy or convenient, but we'll get through this together! Thank you in advance for planning ahead and slowing down for everyone's safety.
