Shift Your Paradigms

What do you see when you look at the picture to the right?

The black dot? Most people notice the black dot, not the white space around it. That is exactly how negativity works. Negativity, whether on a team, individually, or in a system, jumps out at us and overshadows all the positive things. We become comfortable and accustomed to the positives in our lives and often grow numb to them. But the moment negativity appears, it immediately captures our attention. Negativity can take many forms, but when it shows up, our brains tend to exaggerate it and make it seem worse than it really is. When we allow that negativity to linger or grow, we start to believe that there's nothing positive left in the situation. In reality, there's always something good, something positive, in every situation and within ourselves, whether we recognize it right away or not.

If you want to see the power of negativity, imagine you're about to undergo serious surgery and the head surgeon says, "Well, I suppose let's get to it, not that any of us want to be here or that it'll help this poor sap anyway." Imagine how you'd feel in that moment. The nurses' and doctors' confidence would plummet, and the surgeon's own performance would likely suffer because he's already decided there's no point. That's what negativity does, it spreads, weakens confidence, and limits effectiveness. It's a habit that we either feed or we cut out and replace it with positivity. This is a constant internal battle.

As individuals, when we focus on our shortcomings, we invite self-doubt and insecurity to take over instead of confidence and grit. When we dwell on the negatives in life, we lose sight of the blessings and positives around us. We begin to feel self-pity and envy rather than joy and gratitude. Practice, jobs, family obligations, these aren't burdens we HAVE to do, they're blessings we GET to do. As a team, when we allow one negative attitude to take root, it drains the energy and confidence of everyone. When we focus on negatives, whether it's a bad play, tough opponent, or poor conditions, we lose effectiveness and start pointing fingers instead of executing solutions.

So, how do we cut out negativity? We build effective habits- like the 7 Habits of Leader in Me. We practice gratitude, which not only reminds us of our blessings but also spreads positivity to others. When challenges arise, we see them as opportunities for growth rather than failures. What our culture tolerates is what will grow. Choose positivity and teamwork over toxicity and negativity. Don't allow "Energy vampires" (The Energy Bus) to drain the good things your team is doing. Finally, stop voicing complaints and excuses, spreak encouragement instead and face each challenge with confidence and determination.

Football- Hanging the Cleats

The football team finished the season last Friday after a crushing defeat at Mediapolis. The last two weeks of the season, the Hawks competed against the 2nd team in the district (Wilton) and the third ranked (Mediapolis). Each game, the Hawks competed very well in the first quarter, only down a touchdown each game heading into the second. Against Wilton, the Hawks fought hard into the fourth quarter, holding a one score deficit against the 8th ranked team in 2A, until the Beavers' physicality took over and allowed the Beavers to win 28-7. Last week, the Bulldogs were able to take advantage of multiple turnovers by the Hawks to lead to their 35-0 defeat, ending the Hawks' season.

It was a sad scene on the turf of Mediapolis as parents, family, and friends embraced the seniors on their final time wearing the Central Lee football uniform. I can say with confidence, that this group of senior young men competed well over their four years in the football program, defining the idea of developing from small, inexperienced freshmen to strong, physical seniors who did everything right. As they hang up the cleats, they can do so with high heads, knowing they left the jersey in a better place, an important goal from the AD/coach perspective. Though the record does not show it, this football team played at a high level, competing against some of the more talented teams in 2A, just not quite executing to the point of victory. This group of young men and coaches will look to growth over the offseason, starting as early as I type this.

All-District selections will be covered in a future AD Update once announced. Peter Seyb finished in the top 5 in district with 510 rushing yards. Seyb also finished 4th in tackles (55) while teammate Brett Cook finished 2nd with 65.5 tackles. Will Hayes finished 3rd in sacks on the season with 3.5. Cook also was 3rd in interceptions and 2nd in combined interceptions and fumbles recovered.

Volleyball- Bulldogs in the Way of Regionals

Volleyball heads to Mediapolis tomorrow night (10/21) to compete against the Mediapolis Bulldogs for a chance to advance in the regionals tournament. If the Hawks would win, they would face off with the winner of Camanche or Davenport Assumption.

The Lady Hawks finished the regular season 13-15, placing 6th in the SEISC and in the top 50 in class 3A. Taylor Jones, Kenna Sandoval, and Jayden Mueller all achieved a milestone of 1,000 in kills, assists, and digs respectively. Jayden Mueller continues to extend her school record of digs in a career. She is also top 5 in all the state in digs and led the conference. Taylor Jones and Chloee Haigh were top 5 in the conference in blocks, and Brylee Cook led the conference in Aces served while also being one of the more efficient servers.

Cross Country- Head to IC in Hopes of Heading to State

Our cross country team only had the SEISC meet last week. The girls team placed 4th overall with Aubree Bunnell and Macy Anderson having top 12 finishes. Bunnell ran a sub-22 minute time to earn her medal. On the boys side, Austin Fogarty ran a sub-19 minute time, one of his better runs of the season. Teammates Caden Crozier, Caedon Newton, and Orion St. Clair were not far behind, getting close to the sub-19 times.

A special shoutout to the middle school cross country teams! The boys team were conference champs, with Drake Newton being the individual champion with teammate Joseph Kruse being 2nd. The girls' team placed runner-up with Addalie Daly winning 2nd place with Adella Adkins earning 5th place. The future is bright for our running hawks!

The varsity teams travel to Iowa City for the State Qualifying Meet on Thursday (10/23) for a chance to head to the state meet.

Marching Band High Performances

Our marching Hawks competed at the IHSMA State Festival in Davenport where they earned a Division 1 superior rating. To top things off, that evening they traveled (did not march surprisingly) down to Quincy to the Octoberfest Field Show to eventually earn "Outstanding Color Guard," placing 3rd in 3A, and earning the Outstanding Iowa School Award. Previously, the Marching Hawks at Clark County earned 1st place finishes in the Parade Division and the Field Show while being recognized for Outstanding Drum Major.

The Middle School Marching Hawks also brought some hardware (besides instruments) home after winning 1st place in the Parade Division at Clark County.

Chain of Communication

This is just a friendly reminder that when issues occur in athletics, it is important to follow the "Chain of Communication." The best way to understand a coach and/or a situation is to hear it from the source. We must be willing to have productive conversations. As the AD, I have an overview perspective over each program and I may be unable to give specific answers or insight. Though I always have an open door policy for discussion, it is important to discuss solutions internally in a program.
