Estimadas familias,

March entró como un león. Los estudiantes nos muestran sus grandes esfuerzos este mes a medida que se estiran y crecen para convertirse en lo mejor que pueden ser ahorita. Esta semana escuchamos del grupo de mindfulness a través del juego sobre el poder del fracaso y el esfuerzo repetido. Los estudiantes probaron sus habilidades en los Kendamas y rápidamente se dieron cuenta de que convertirse en un experto requiere tiempo y esfuerzo y, aun así, el éxito no es constante.

Guardamos un minuto de silencio por las negociaciones pacíficas. Los estudiantes tienen tantas preguntas; le pedimos que se comunique con su hijo, ya que muchos escuchan fragmentos de noticias e informes mundiales.

Dear Families,

March came in like a lion. Students are showing us their great efforts this month as they stretch and grow becoming the best they can be today. This week we heard from the mindfulness through play group about the power of failure and repeated effort. Students tested out their skills on the Kendamas and quickly realized becoming an expert takes time and effort and even then, success is not consistent.

We held a moment of silence for peaceful negotiations. Students have so many questions; we ask that you check in with your child as so many hear clips of news and world reports.

May you find joy this weekend creating time for mindful play.

At James John School, one of the many ways we support our students' Social and Emotional Learning is through Mindfulness Practice. Taking a mindful moment, a few deep intentional breaths, and other simple but effective strategies are tools we can all use when we need to reset our bodies and our brains. Earlier this year, I submitted an application for a special educational programming opportunity run by the Sweets Kendamas Foundation, and we were thrilled to learn that our school had been selected to receive our Mindfulness through Play P.E program for free! Due to grant funding of this program, we were one of ten schools selected in Portland Public Schools. Here is a brief write-up to learn more:

The Mindfulness through Play program incorporates SHAPE physical literacy standards and the benefits of mindfulness. The program coaches students on emotional awareness and growth mindset and then helps students put these concepts into practice through a fun series of progressively harder challenges. The challenges revolve around a skill toy called a kendama. Practicing kendama helps students develop balance and hand eye coordination, while also practicing perseverance, grit and overcoming frustration. Mindfulness through Play programs receive programming for each PE class over the course of two days, and a class set of 40 kendamas to keep. Ask your student what they learned about playing with Kendamas in their PE this week! And many thanks to Coach C for being such a flexible and positive leader in supporting this opportunity for all of our PE classes. Go Lions!
