Friction Lab

Friction Lab Short

Definitions

Static Friction

Force that opposes impending motion.

Kinetic Friction

Force that opposes relative motion.

Equations

Helpful Guidance

Purpose

Calculate the coefficient kinetic friction.

Materials

inclined plane apparatus, mass set, mass block and motion detector

Procedure

The incline must be positioned at 30°

Use different mass relationships for all 6 trials.

Record all acceleration as positive.

Limit acceleration values to less than 1.5 m/s^2.

Hanging Mass

Motion detector on the floor directly beneath the hanging mass.

Derivation

Derive expressions for the force of friction, normal force and coefficient of friction between the block and the inclined surface when the masses are accelerating:

  • up the incline
  • down the incline

NOTE - The pulley is massless and frictionless.
