Course Selection Kick-Off

Course Selection Kick-Off

We met with all of the students, grades 9-11, to talk about course selection today and gave the following presentation, Course Selection 2025-2026, which includes references to the 2025-2026 Enrollment Guide. Please take a look at either and/or both to help select courses for next year.

For students considering upper level/AP courses, please take a look at "Upper Level Courses Hours of Homework Per Week". This will also help you when you're thinking about school/life balance.

Mrs. Waggoner and I will begin meeting with students this week through the month of February individually to discuss course selection, to make sure students are on track for graduation/Hathaway, and to talk about plans for post-high school. There is a section in the enrollment guide called "COLLEGE AND CAREER READY, A FOUR YEAR PROCESS ", which will help you map out post-high school planning throughout high school.

We will have the students map out their four-year plan and assess where they are in their post-high school planning process. We'll give them the Quick Sheet of Post High School Planning Resources to help them understand different aspects of the process.

Fair Opportunity Project "The Guide" is also an excellent resource to read when planning for life after high school. Fair Opportunity Project also has many other useful tools.

You can check your student's course selection on Parent Portal by clicking on "Academic Plan" on the left-hand side.

National School Counseling Week is Feb. 3-7

This week is National School Counseling Week! To celebrate, our small but mighty group of 10 counselors across the school district are promoting self care. Self-care is a powerful way to create a positive and supportive school environment. Practicing self-care enhances mental and physical well-being, helping all of us manage stress, build resilience, improve focus and develop positive relationships. Every day this week, we would like for you to take “Self-Care Selfies” specific to the daily theme then email your pictures to Mrs. Leafgreen. We’ll post our favorites on Mrs. Leafgreen’s t.v. announcements and to social media.

Monday – Walking in a Winter Wonderland: Take a selfie while going for a winter walk.

Tuesday – Hydrate for Health: Take a selfie with your favorite water bottle.

Wednesday – Have a Mindful Moment: Take a selfie practicing mindfulness or doing something that helps you relax.

Thursday – Therapy Dog Thursday: Take a selfie with Carl!

Friday – Acts of Kindness – Take a selfie doing something kind for others.

Making the Most of Spring Break: A Guide to Campus Visits for Families

Making the Most of Spring Break: A Guide to Campus Visits for Families

I know it's just the beginning of February, but this is a great time for families to huddle together and start planning which colleges they'd like to visit over spring break. I tell families that Spring break is the best time to visit if a school is in session - it's important to check to see if your high school calendar overlaps with college calendars.

College Account Logins

Seniors and Senior Parents:

As your student makes their college selection, I encourage you to sit with them and log in to their college accounts. For the University of Wyoming, for example, this is their "WyoWeb" account. This is where students:

  • see their financial aid,
  • apply for institutional scholarships,
  • see if they have been selected for FAFSA verification (along with the paperwork you will need to fill out)
  • fill out housing paperwork
  • pay enrollment fees
  • access their University email
  • see any deadlines
  • sign up for orientation

When a student is accepted to a college, she/he will receive an email with directions about logging into her/his account and next steps.

It's critical that students start checking this to keep up with enrollment requirements. I know many students are still making college decisions, but please sit with them to look through this as they do.

If your student needs any help with this process, please have them stop by my office so that we can look together.
