Dear Adventure Families,

In less than a week, all of our students will participate in the annual Adventure Fun Run! Families are invited to join and run/walk with their child or to cheer students on! We are looking for volunteers to help, too; sign up if you're able! Remember, you can still donate here; all funds raised will go towards student field trips, guest speakers, special presentations, and student awards, allowing us to to provide these enrichment opportunities to all students without charging families. As of Thursday morning, our total raised was about $2,800 so we have a long way to go in order to afford all the field trips and special assemblies that we have planned for the year! Ms. Schriever's 1st grade is in the lead, congratulations! Shout out to Axel in 1st grade for leading the individual donations raised!

There has been lots of excitement in our classrooms as students and teachers imagine the new possibilities of having the marmot as our mascot! Ms. Nonies and students in the upper grades in general music have been hard at work adjusting and learning the revised school song; they will teach the students the new version at an upcoming assembly. Also, drawing on the criteria of being symbolic and bilingual, we’ve received many name suggestions! Students, staff, and community members can visit the booth at our Fun Run next week to cast their vote for one of the following:

  • Chispa – “Spark” or “sparkle”
A chispa is the spark that lights the way to discovery. It connects to Colorado’s gold-mining past while also symbolizing the joy and curiosity our students bring to learning. Just as a spark grows into a flame, our students’ ideas grow through rigorous exploration in two languages, shining brightly in an inclusive community.
  • Pepita – “Nugget”
This name honors Colorado’s golden history while representing the treasures found in every learner. Each pepita holds value—just as every student contributes unique strengths to our school. With joy, rigor, and biliteracy, we help uncover and polish those gifts so they can shine within an inclusive learning community.
  • Amigo – “Friend”
Amigo highlights the heart of our school: belonging, connection, and care. It reflects our belief that learning happens best in community, where joy and inclusion guide us every day. As a Spanish word for “friend,” Amigo also celebrates our biliteracy mission, reminding us that friendship and rigorous learning cross languages and bring us together.

As we prepare to have new items for sale in our school spirit store, we are having a sale on T-shirts with the Miner logo! Instead of $15, you can buy them for $10 from the front office. Limited sizes and quantities are available, and when they're gone, they're gone!

Saludos,

Sarah and Marisa

Our Dual Language Enrichment classrooms are off to a great start! Our kindergarteners are learning to read and write in their dominant language while our first graders continue to strengthen their literacy skills in their dominant language. Our second graders are starting their first year of 50-50 literacy instruction, which means they are learning how to read and write explicitly in both English and Spanish for the first time. Our third graders have started their second year of 50-50 literacy instruction, and they are thriving.

All around the school, students are interacting with each other and their environment in both English and Spanish. Please interact with your student at home in any language that you are able to!

Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual observance from September 15 to October 15 that recognizes the histories, cultures, and significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to U.S. society. It celebrates people with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The timing is significant, as the month begins with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15.

As a dual language school, Adventure is proud to celebrate in several ways. One way is by inviting our students to dress in the traditional clothing of their family on September 26. During our school assembly on this day, we will invite participating students to stand and be recognized.

September is Attendance Awareness Month September is Attendance Awareness Month

Watch this brief video for a message regarding the importance of being present, being proud, and being you.

Each month, students have the chance to earn awards for strong attendance. In August, students with 0–3 excused absences, tardies, or early dismissals enjoyed a bonus recess—and congratulations to 3rd grade for having the highest percentage of students at school every day!

Our school-wide goal is a 96% attendance rate, and for September, the grade level with the highest attendance will win a pizza party! 🍕

We truly appreciate your partnership and support in valuing attendance. By making sure your child comes to school on time every day, you are helping them build strong habits, stay on track with learning, and thrive at Adventure.

Over the past three years, Adventure has made great progress with attendance! Our chronic absenteeism rate has dropped from 47.1% to 28.8%—a big step forward and stronger than the state’s overall trend reported by CDE.

The first three months of school (August–October) are the most powerful time to build strong attendance habits that last all year. Together, we can keep this positive momentum going. By partnering closely, staying proactive, and supporting students every step of the way, we can ensure more of our children are present each day—learning, building confidence, succeeding academically, and grow at Adventure.

Mapleton Homecoming Mapleton Homecoming

As a small school district, Mapleton Homecoming is a longstanding tradition for all PK-12 students. This year, Mapleton's Homecoming celebrations will take place on Friday, September 26. All schools will dismiss 2 hours early (1:10 for Adventure). There is a parade that starts at the Skyview campus at 3:45, followed by a Tailgate party (4:30-6pm), and the football game (7pm kick-off). Volunteer to make a contribution or help during the event.

Adventure will have a float and we invite students and families to join us in walking in the parade! Meet in the Skyview main parking lot at 3:30 with a permission slip to join us; students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Adventure's VIVA group is also sponsoring a carnival games booth during the Tailgate Party, so please stop by and play with us!

School Safety Reminders School Safety Reminders

As required by law to assure we are familiar with the safety protocol, all schools must hold a Lockdown drill within the first month of school. So, our staff will be talking with students about this protol in the next couple of weeks to prepare them for one very soon. As I shared in a previous newsletter, the Lockdown protocol includes closing and locking all interior doors, turning lights off, and moving out of sight.

In the world today, school safety is not a responsibility we take lightly. The tragedy at Evergreen High School is sad and scary. .So, when we practice safety drills at Adventure, we do so with age appropriate language, sensitivity, and compassion. If you have questions about school safety, please reach out to your child's teacher or school administration.

Get to know Ms. Lerma!

Originally from Pueblo, Ms. Lerma is married and has two daughters. Both of them attend Mapleton Public Schools! Her family really enjoys travel. They love going to the beach, the mountains, and any theme park.

Ms. Lerma has spent her entire teaching career at Adventure. In her 13th year of teaching, Ms. Lerma holds a few different leadership positions within our school and at the district level. She is a member of Adventure's Instructional Leadership Team and she is in her second year as a Mapleton Literacy Lead Teacher. Teaching phonics is one of her passion areas! Ms. Lerma also really loves seeing her students grow up by developing relationships with families over years as a result of working with siblings.

While Ms. Lerma is not bilingual, many of her family members are including her husband so she has witnessed first hand the benefits that bilingualism brings to someone's life. She believes bilingualism is a superpower and she wants this for her own children.
