We had another great week in first grade! We are actively checking students on the rainbow words so please be certain you are helping them at home. Several have already finished the pot of gold! We want that for every student. Also, please keep reading with your child every night. It truly makes a positive difference in their educational journey. We hope you all have a nice weekend.
Ms. Hartness & Ms. Vicky
This week:
Math- We added tens or ones to two-digit numbers and wrote equations to show our work.
Reading/Phonics- In reading we are starting a new unit, Learning About the World. We will be looking at books, and the world, with a sense of wonder and curiosity. This is a nonfiction unit study. In phonics we practiced rhyme recognition, onset fluency, blending phonemes, isolating final or medial sounds, segmenting phonemes, deleting final phoneme or rime, and substituting final phonemes
Writing- We continue writing books getting inspiration from other books. We looked at things we can expertly write about: soccer, baseball, dancing, drawing, etc.
Social Studies- Our historic figures study ended: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagawea (exploration), Theodore Roosevelt (National Parks and the environment), George Washington Carver, and Ruby Bridges.
Next week:
Math- We will add a one-digit and a two-digit number and recognize when a new ten will be composed. We will also add 2 two-digit numbers within 100, with composing a ten, in a way that makes sense to them.
Reading/Phonics- In reading we will study students who ask questions (Who? What? Where?
When? Why? How?) can help nonfiction readers learn even more. In phonics we will practice rhyme recognition, onset fluency, blending phonemes, isolating final or medial sounds, segmenting phonemes, deleting final phoneme or rime, and substituting final phonemes
Writing- We will continue writing books based on our expertise.
Social Studies- We will begin our study on goods and services.

Dear Parents,
We are already practicing how to access and navigate the STAMP test. The students will take the test during the last week of March and will be assessed in two skills: speaking and listening. I will send a separate email with detailed information on how to access a practice test from home, along with resources available on our class website.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
This week:
Reading: The students read sentences and drew what the sentence described to enhance their decoding skills and comprehension.
Writing: The students worked on vocabulary by reading words, defining them, drawing them, and using them in a sentence.
Language: The students classified items into four categories: people, animals, objects, and places.
Math: The students added two two-digit numbers without composing a ten, using methods based on place value. They made sense of equations that represented addition methods.
Science: The students explored the concepts of shadow and light, learning how shadows were formed and how light interacted with objects.
Next week:
Reading: The students will be introduced to story elements.
Writing: The students will practice extending sentences and ensuring proper capitalization at the beginning and a period at the end.
Language: The students will continue classifying items into four categories: people, animals, objects, and places.
Math: The students will add a one-digit and a two-digit number, composing a ten, using place value understanding and the properties of operations.
Science: The students will explore the concepts of shadows and light, learning how shadows are formed and how light interacts with objects.
