DC CAPE Announcements DC CAPE Announcements

Next week is the start of DC CAPE, our annual district-wide assessment. DC CAPE is very important, so we ask that you please make sure that your student rests, eats breakfast, and spends time away from screens when they get home!

🥖 Snacks! 🥫

After taking CAPE, students are often hungry and cranky. To prevent this, the school has asked us to request donations of snacks so our students don't become hangry in our direction!

Here is the link to our amazon wishlist with food items - please donate and please make sure that your student eats breakfast every day!

📖 Books! 📚

When students finish DC CAPE early, they can draw with pencils or they can read a book. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD ARRIVES TO TESTING WITH A BOOK!! This is essential to make sure that your students do not become distractable and loud once finishing testing.

Schedule

During DC CAPE, students will spend their mornings testing. This means that we have to alternate the morning classes (1 and 2) with the after lunch classes (6 and 7). Periods 3, 4, and 5 happen every day, since they are the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade lunches, respectively.

If you are curious, please read the schedule below!

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

Today’s Vocabulary Quiz has been rescheduled to Monday, April 27th for 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 7th periods. I want to applaud 1st period for their eagerness and readiness to take the quiz today as scheduled.

The vocabulary words and definitions are listed below:

  • Abundance: a very large amount of something

  • Conservation: the protection of animals, plants, and forests from human activity

  • Debris: broken or torn pieces of something larger

  • Habitat: the natural home of a plant or animal

  • Legislate: to make a law

  • Marine: relating to the sea or the creatures that live there

  • Populate: to fill an area with living creatures or beings

  • Sustain: to keep something going for a long time

Next week, we will continue diving deeper into Unit 4: Our Changing Oceans by collecting additional evidence to answer our essential question: How are humans impacting the ocean, and what can we do to protect it? Students will explore texts such as “Sea Level Rise” and “Plenty of Fish” to examine how environmental changes and human actions affect marine ecosystems. We will also use related media to build background knowledge, strengthen comprehension, and support students in making connections across texts.

Families should also look out for a separate email from me with the subject “The Giver Film Study in ELA Class (Opt-Out Information Included)” for additional information about our upcoming comparative study of The Giver and its 2014 film adaptation. That message will include details about the DCPS-approved curriculum connection, the film’s PG-13 rating, and the opt-out process. The deadline to return the opt-out form is next Thursday, April 30th.

As always, please ensure your scholar is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. Regular independent reading is one of the best ways to strengthen comprehension, build vocabulary, and reinforce the skills students need to be successful on the ELA CAPE.

Math with Mx. Gomez

DC CAPE MATH Testing Begins Next Week

After a year of consistent effort and preparation, students will take the DC CAPE 6th Grade Math assessment beginning next Tuesday. To support their success, I am strongly encouraging students to get plenty of rest this weekend, each night of testing, come to school feeling focused, and eat a good breakfast each testing day! Being well-rested and fueled makes a huge difference!

We will have three days of DC CAPE testing in math next week. During and around testing, students will be working on a Statistics Project in class where they will collect data from other 6th graders. Although the daily schedules will look a little different, we will ensure that all students have ample opportunities to collect data and make steady progress on their projects.

Students will complete their statistics project using PowerPoint. Because all school-issued devices will be dedicated to testing during DC CAPE, students who do not have access to a computer at home are encouraged to:

  • Use one of the limited library devices available at school OR

  • Visit their local public library to create and refine their presentation.

We will transition to begin project presentations on Friday.

Students have worked incredibly hard all year, and this is their moment to show their learning, growth, and perseverance. Thank you for your continued support as we head into this important week!

No Paramaribo Tutoring During CAPE

Due to DC CAPE, Paramaribo Tutoring will be cancelled for the week of April 27th. The only students who may stay after school on Wednesday are those who do not have a device at home and need technical support for their statistics project.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

This week, students worked through our Economic Systems packet to build their understanding of key concepts and vocabulary. Any unfinished portions of the packet will be assigned as weekend homework, and we will review their answers together next week.

Next week, students will complete Formative Assessments for Criteria A and D, create a study guide, and participate in review activities to prepare for the unit test. Students will then take the unit assessment once we have completed our review.

Please note that CAPE standardized testing will impact our daily schedule. As a result, lessons and activities may shift slightly, and we will move through the week’s tasks in an order that best supports student learning and time availability.

Here is the new wishlist link if you would like to donate to the Geography classroom.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hi scientists,

I hope you had a restful and fun break! This past week we reviewed our Weather and Water content to prepare for end of unit summative which was held on Thursday and Friday. Students learned about water pollution for Earth Day and how humans can affect the water cycle.

Next week we begin CAPE testing! Students will be transitioning into our Climate and Human Impacts unit by learning about extreme weather and completing an engineering project. Students will be challenged to design and build a building that can withstand at least three different kinds of extreme weather. Buildings will be tested with wind, water, and more!

Donation Request: Clean Trash

For this project, we need your help with materials! We are asking for donations of CLEAN recycling that could be made into a building. This could include:

  • Cardboard

  • Egg cartons

  • Clean, empty plastic bottles

  • Clean, empty milk/juice cartons

  • Mesh bags from tangerines/cuties

  • Tinfoil

  • Other recyclables that could be useful!

Additionally, we could use:

  • Pipe cleaners

  • Tape

  • Glue

  • Popsicle sticks

Please DO NOT send

  • Glass-too breakable

  • Tin cans-too sharp/hard to work with

Thank you!!!

Roots!

Notes from MLL Support

Last week students read the short story, “Thank you, Ma’am” by Langston Hughs and completed their annotation sheet as well as the text dependent questions. Next week, we are starting CAPE testing on Tuesday. On Monday, students will practice using word-to-word dictionary in their home language as a part of the accommodation for CAPE. Students are encouraged to continue with READ 180 and iReady at home.
