Car Rider and Walker News

Families,

We are off to a great start to the school year! As a reminder, every family needs car rider/walker tags this year. You need them in the case your child needs to become a car rider or walker for a particular situation. Please check your child's bookbag if you have not already received them. Beginning Wednesday, August 13, anyone who comes to pick up a student in car rider or as a walker and does not have a school issued tag will be directed to the office for pick up. Sometimes we have other people calling names or dismissing walkers who are not familiar with you, so it is imperative that you present these tags. If you require additional tags, you may purchase them for $1. Also, we encourage you to keep the tags in the protective covering they were sent home in so that they will last the school year.

Also, we are noticing that families are parking on Oriole Drive in order to pick your child up as a walker. Please refer to Parent Handbook pg. 30 that was sent to you and is included at the bottom of this newsletter and review that this is not an allowed drop off or pick up place. Walkers should either be crossing with the crossing guard located on Highway 34 or to the neighborhoods surrounding us.

Thank you for helping us keep all of our students safe!

Technology Fees

Families,

In keeping with KCSD School Board policy, all students in grades 1st - 5th need to pay a $10 technology fee before they can bring a device home. This and other fees can be paid online. To pay, you can go to www.myschoolbucks.com and create an account or log in to an existing one. Payments can be made by visiting the "School Store." Myschoolbucks.com charges a processing fee for online payments. You may also send $10 (cash or check made payable to LES) to your child's teacher, or you may drop it off at the front office. This fee must be paid each year and covers charges for Chromebook damages. The KCSD insurance plan covers the cost of one (1) accidental repair per school year; however, any damages or repair costs beyond the first incident will be the responsibility of the student/parent/guardian. Please refer to pages 73 and 74 of the Parent Handbook below for additional information.

News From Our Nurse

Welcome to a new school year! I’m Annah Deal, your school nurse, and my primary goal is to keep our students healthy, safe, and ready to learn. To help us maintain a safe environment for all children, please review the following South Carolina Department of Public Health (SC DPH) guidelines regarding school illness exclusions and required immunizations for Pre-K through 5th grade provided in the links below.

SC DPH Exclusion Guidelines: When to Stay Home, When to Return- Please review:

School Exclusion | South Carolina Department of Public Health

A brief overview of the most common symptoms and conditions are listed below. Please keep your child at home if they are experiencing any of the following:

Fever: A temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher. Students must remain home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Unexplained vomiting: 2 or more times in a 24 hour period. Students may return when well enough to participate in school activities.
Diarrhea: 3 or more loose stools in a 24 hour period. Students may return when they have no more than 2 stools above their normal habit.

Please practice good hand washing at home with your child to prevent the spread of illnesses.

Immunization Requirements (Pre-K through 5th Grade)

South Carolina state law requires every student to have a valid South Carolina Certificate of Immunization (or an official state medical/religious exemption form) on file at the school prior to attendance.

Vaccine Requirements & Info | South Carolina Department of Public Health

Pre-K (4K): Children enrolled in 4K programs must meet SC DPH Childcare Requirements, which include age-appropriate doses of DTaP, Polio, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hib, and Pneumococcal (PCV) vaccines.

Important Health Room Reminders

Medication Administration: All medications administered at school require a completed KCSD Medication Administration Form. Prescription medications must be signed by a licensed health care provider, parent/guardian, and brought to the health room by an adult in the original, prescription labeled container. Over the counter medications require a parent/guardian signature and must be supplied in an unopened container. Never send medication with your child to school.
Updated Records: Whenever your child receives updated vaccinations or has changes to their health history, please submit an updated SC Certificate of Immunization to the health room and inform me of new health related issues.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school community healthy! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or health concerns regarding your child.

Door Dash

While we understand how wonderful it can be to have Chick-fil-A or other take-out delivered, during the school day, we are not able to coordinate DoorDash or other 3rd party deliveries for students. Our priorities focus on school safety and our students' learning environment. Both of these could be compromised when managing deliveries. In addition, our front office is not an area that can manage "safe food handling" needs. Of course, if you are coming to eat with your child, feel free to bring in outside food!

Annual Title 1 Meeting

Welcome to a brand new school year! As a Title 1 school, we are required to host an annual meeting so that you can learn about your child's participation in Title 1, explain Title 1 requirements, and let you know your rights as a parent. Please join us at 5:30 PM in the gym for a 15 minute meeting prior to Open House for grades 2 - 5. We look forward to seeing you!

Lugoff Elementary Is A Title I School. What Does That Mean?

Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides financial assistance to states and school districts to meet the needs of academically at-risk students. The goal of Title I is to provide extra instructional services and activities which support students identified as failing or most at risk of failing the state’s challenging performance standards in mathematics, reading, and writing.

What will Title I do for my child?

The Title I program will provide your student with extra educational assistance.

Which students does Title I Serve?

The program serves students who have demonstrated that extra assistance is needed.

How does our school receive Title I money?

First, the federal government provides funding to each state. Then, each State Educational Agency sends money to its school districts. The amount of money each school receives is determined by the number of low-income students attending that school. Finally, Title I schools:

Identify the students at their school who need the most educational assistance based on the criteria that school has chosen. Students do NOT have to be from low-income families to receive Title I services.
Set goals for improving the skills of academically at-risk students at their school.
Measure student progress to determine the success of the Title I program for each student.
Develop programs for each individual student in order to support/supplement regular classroom instruction.

What do Title I programs offer?

Title I programs generally offer:

Additional teachers and/or paraprofessionals
Opportunities for professional development for school staff
Extra time for teaching Title I students the skills they need
A variety of supplementary teaching methods
An individualized program for students
Additional teaching materials which supplement a student’s regular instruction
A variety of opportunities for parents to stay informed and be involved with their child’s educational experience
Parent Resource Centers with educational materials and resources for families to check out and use at home
