Dear FES Families and Community,

It was a wonderful end to the week with ghouls, goblins and more parading down the street today for our Halloween parade! Thank you to all the community and family members that could come and support the students. They all worked hard on costumes and everyone seemed to enjoy the event. A BIG thank you to the Francestown Police Department! They had two cars watching over the students and it made it such an exciting (and safe!) parade! Even the PD's mascot, Feona, was happy to visit school and wear her costume for the students to enjoy. Our day began with a treat, not a trick...The beautiful rainbow that hung over FES! Enjoy and have a safe and Happy HALLOWEEN!

A Bootiful Gift from our PTO!

Our amazing PTO had donated a pumpkin for each student to carve this Halloween Day. This morning the children arrived and went to a specific spot in the multi-purpose room where they could carve a pumpkin into a Jack-O-Lantern with the help of many volunteers. All the students had a wonderful time and seemed very successful, making cats, faces and even silly jokes into their pumpkins! The PTO was graciously taking them after they were completed to the town center, where they would be enjoyed by the whole Francestown community this Halloween Eve.

K-1 Class with Ms. Flanagan

This week we started learning about number stories. On Thursday students created their own number stories based on the picture they were given. Then they shared them with the class.

Mrs. Carbonneau's Grade 1-2 Classroom

Mrs. Carbonneau's Grade 1-2 students were busy this week talking about, "Silver Dollar" words. Building up our vocabulary was an important goal this week and students dove into the work and the deep thinking necessary to extend and enrich their language. They each painted watercolor pictures on the topic of nature after our experience with O.L.L.! As a class, they brainstormed words that described each painting, then we discussed in partners the other words we could use to really hone in on the feeling the picture represented. Thanks to our amazing former art teacher and substitute, Mrs. Mack, we had so much fun learning new words and extending our abilities together!

Library/Media with Mrs. Donovan

This week we’ve read many of the picture books for this year’s Ladybug Picture Book Awards, a program of the NH State Library. When we’ve read them all, FES students will help choose the statewide winning book by voting on a special picture ballot.

The big excitement of the week was OLL on Wednesday. To get ready, we shared nonfiction books about leaves. Kara from the Harris Center and Mrs. Donovan helped students notice the parts of a book that would help us learn about leaves and other nonfiction topics.

Our OLL activity was finding an interesting leaf and trying to match it to the right kind of tree. We carefully did a crayon rubbing of the tree, and came back inside to do a leaf rubbing. These will be part of the FES Field Guide that all the students will be creating this year during OLL days.

We also looked closely at the shapes of leaves and their veins. We chose line drawings of different leaves, and used crayons and watercolor to make them look lifelike. We are planning to add this artwork to our Field Guide.

Winter Weather REMINDER

Please remember to send your child in with appropriate warm clothing. We want your child to be warm and cozy at recess and coats, hats and mittens/gloves are important for them to stay healthy. We play outside in the early morning at recess and it is very cold in the back of the school. Any reminders for your children to bring them would be very helpful!
