An Eighth Grade Exchange - Edition #11

Nichols NewsAn Eighth Grade Exchange - Edition #11

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the final week before Winter Break, we have an exciting and busy schedule ahead! Our students will be participating in Spirit Week, bringing extra energy and fun to our hallways during this festive time. Please encourage your children to join in the daily themed celebrations.

We'll also be conducting MAP Testing make-up sessions for students who missed their initial testing dates. If your child needs to complete their testing, their teacher will communicate the specific time slot.

With just five days remaining until break, we can all feel the anticipation building. Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard up to this point, and we're looking forward to this well-deserved time for rest and family/friend connections. We also want to acknowledge that while winter break brings joy and celebration for many, we understand it can also be a challenging time for some families as well. Whether this season brings moments of celebration, reflection, or mixed emotions, please know that our school community holds each and every one of your families in our hearts. We're sending warm thoughts and positive energy to every family, and we hope you find moments of peace and connection during the break. We deeply appreciate your continued support and partnership in making our school community thrive as we enter into the New Year! The final day of school will be Friday, December 20th. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 7th, 2025.

Warmest regards,

Ms. Ernvall

πŸ“Œ Cold Weather Reminders

As we enter the winter season, please remember that our students will still be going outside for recess if the temperature β€œfeels like” 20Β°F or above. With this in mind, it’s essential that students come to school dressed warmly and in weather-appropriate clothing for both indoor and outdoor activities. Here’s a checklist of items your child should have each day:

  • A warm coat

  • Hat and gloves

  • Scarf

  • Weather-appropriate footwear to keep their feet warm and dry

Students have 40 minutes of recess and lunch, with 20 minutes spent outside. Proper attire will help ensure your child stays comfortable and healthy during this time.

πŸ“Œ TUESDAY TUESDAY TUESDAY

Tuesday morning we will be joined by Ms. Alicia Hart from ETHS! All 8th grade students will be engaged in a Elective Course Review Day! We will get the opportunity to walk students through certain course options and selections for their freshman year at ETHS. This process is significantly easier for students if they are registered prior to Tuesday's Review Day! See below on how to register your student if they are not already!

πŸ“Œ Listen and Learn

Thank you to the many staff, families and community members who have shared their input as we work towards developing the district’s Structural Deficit Reduction Plan. Over the past week we have hosted meetings with different stakeholder groups, including two public meetings open to the community. If you weren’t able to attend, there is still one more meeting!

  • December 16, 9:30-10:45 a.m. at Fleetwood-Jourdain Center - 1655 Foster St., Evanston

These sessions are intended to be a two-way discussion on the district’s budget and financial outlook and to gather input. This helps ensure that the plan currently being developed remains aligned with our collective values and provides all children in our community with a high-quality education. More details

πŸ“Œ Winter Break Resources

We hope that the upcoming winter break is a time of rest and relaxation! We also know that for some, this can be a stressful time of year. D65 strives to be a place of support for our staff and families. During winter break, consider these resources:

  • Access to meals: Evanston Care Network is a one-stop-shop approach to care, including resources for housing, legal aid, mental health care, and more. You’ll find details and information for more than 50 food pantries, including next steps for receiving meals and contact information.
  • Mental health care: It’s important to reach out for help when you need it. D65’s partnership with Care Solace provides complimentary and confidential help with finding treatment options for mental health and substance use. Call 888-515-0595 (multilingual support is available 24/7), or visit caresolace.com/district65. The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached by calling or texting 988.

This week, we will be conducting locker clean-out to ensure everything is in order before we head into winter break. Please remind your scholar to bring home all of the items they’ve collected over the past couple of months.

In addition to locker clean-out, we will also be clearing out the Lost & Found. Items will be displayed in the cafeteria, and we encourage scholars to check for any missing belongings. We have a wide variety of unclaimed items, including clothing, winter gear, books, tumblers, and more.

Any items not claimed by the end of the week will be donated. Thank you for your support in helping us start the new year fresh and organized!
