City Announcements
New School Needed: Input Needed!
Why are we building a new school?
- A new PK-8 school building will address the needs of the Winter Hill Community Innovation School (WHCIS) and potentially the Brown School.
- The WHCIS building on Sycamore Street had to close in 2023 due to a structural issue. Somervilleβs oldest school building the Brown School (built in 1900) also will need major renovation in the future.
- Since 2023, the City has been working to secure state funding through the MSBA to help pay for the needs of both schools. The MSBA declined to fund two separate schools, but they did offer the City two options for this project: build a new school for WHCIS only, or build a larger single school to address the needs of both the WHCIS and Brown School at one location.
Why we want to hear from you
- We want you input on the location of the new school, if it should also serve the Brown School, and what your other related priorities are for a new school and other new projects in Somerville. So, we hope everyone in the SPS community takes the survey.
Who is asking for your opinion?
- The CAG and the Mayor want to hear from you. Mayor Katjana Ballantyne convened the School Construction Advisory Group (CAG) made up of SPS parents, residents, and elected officials to make a recommendation to her on the location and whether the project will also address the needs of the Brown School. The CAG developed the survey with the City and an outside team.
All SPS community members invited to take the survey
- The CAG hopes to hear from all SPS community members and the general community. Big decisions like this have benefits and choices that affect the full community, so everyoneβs voice matters.
Whatβs the latest news about the new school?
- In December 2024, the Cityβs funding proposal to the state passed a critical milestone: Somerville received approval to hire the project team. This team will work with City staff to design and build the new school. In May, the City hired an Ownerβs Project Manager and is now working to choose an architecture firm to design the project.
When will the new school open?
- Building a school is a multi-year planning and design process, followed by approximately 3 years of construction. It took X years, for example, to plan and build the new high school. Additionally, the MSBA has a set timeline and steps the City must follow to be eligible for state funding. At this stage, we anticipate construction of the new school could be completed by late 2031 barring unforeseen circumstances.
