Halloween
Halloween Costuming
Halloween is approaching quickly! At Ann Arbor Open, we sometimes have students wear costumes during the school day. The same may be true in the remote world. Please observe these guidelines if you choose to allow your child to wear a costume to a school meeting OR to send a Halloween photo or video to school for any reason.
Remind students that some families do not observe Halloween at school or at home for a variety of reasons. Wearing a costume or sending a photo is voluntary.
All costumes (parent, staff, and student) should be
Rated G - nothing too scary, gory, creepy, or sexy - we have kindergartners!
Weaponless - not even flimsy plastic ones. Just leave the light sabers, bows & arrows, and other weapons - real or fantasy - at home.
Absent of face masks or other face covering that obscures identity. We need to be able to see student faces. Face paint or make up is okay.
Culturally sensitive. Dressing up with hair, hairstyles, clothing or makeup that depicts another's culture should be avoided. It is also good to avoid any costumes that mock body types, socio economic status, or religion.

Welcome Maggie
On November 2nd our new science teacher Maggie McGlothin will be joining Ann Arbor Open! Please see the infographic below.
Parking Reminder
Asking Again
This continues to be a small issue. We understand that families want to park and walk or wait with their student before the bell rings. We need to keep the majority of the parking lot open for staff to park. The slots next to the basketball court are good if you want to stay for a moment (see the attached picture). The street and the neighborhood are great places to park if you want to walk your child to their classroom. Thank you so much!
Morning Bus/Drop Off Information
Some Quick Notes
- At 8:03am students are allowed in for breakfast whether they are dropped off by the bus or car
- During any kind of inclement weather in the morning (cold temps, raining hard, etc), we bring students inside the main lobby area until the 8:10am bell rings.
- We have at least one staff member in the front by car drop off and out back by buses daily. Dr. B is in the front with the cars and Krista is out back with buses. We also have an additional staff members signed up for both areas in case either Krista or Dr. B need to attend to a student, family, or a meeting that goes past that first bell.
- Staff will be coming into the building at 8:15 to start the school day.

Some examples include: bracelets, slime, jewelry, crocheted stuffies, magnets, baked goods...the options are endless! It just needs to be made by you.Students (from any school, including homeschooled) and AAPS Staff: $5 for half a table; $10 for full. All others: $15 for half a table; $30 for full. Silent Auction - Save the Date
Get ready, get set, preparation for the Annual Silent Auction is underway. Room parents will be reaching out shortly to families to plan for classroom contributions. It is an AAO tradition that each class donates something to the auction...think themed gift baskets (movie night anyone?) or something the students make (a porch pot hand painted by the class?). The possibilities are endless! We are also seeking donations from local businesses. If you or your employer would be interested in donating an item or an experience email Nicole at fundraising@aaopencc.org to learn more!
Panda Players
Just Another Middle School
We're happy to announce that Just Another Middle* School Play will premiere at Forsythe Auditorium on November 7th, 2026. We will have 2 shows at 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
Just Another Middle* School Play Synopsis:
A group of actors, who have apparently been abandoned by their drama teacher, have to fend for themselves on opening night in front of a live audience. In this hilarious metatheatrical comedy, a desperate Stage Manager and an overly confident Assistant Director (who has "never actually seen a play but has great ideas") attempt to cobble together a production using whatever scripts they can find backstage. What follows is a rollicking show full of physical comedy, gags, and satirical re-writings of many classic works, from Shakespeare to Thornton Wilder.

See you there!
Theatrically yours,
Johnny and Kayleigh

Krista and I sent out emails last week. It is important that EVERY family to complete the Education Benefits Form. Why? Each household is asked to complete the Household Information Report. This report is critical in determining the amount of money our school receives from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs. No information is shared at the building level as ALL information is kept at the district level. Use this link to get more information. Paper copies will NOT be sent out this year.
Lastly, once on the website, please click <Apply for Benefits> Read the information and once you are able to, please click <Education Benefits Form> and follow the prompts. That’s it!
An Ann Arbor Open Parent created this so that you can subscribe and get automatic updates to your calendar with the latest lunch menus.

From the District
Exciting Opportunity
The District would like to share a free STEM opportunity for students in grades 4–8 that may be a great fit. The Michigan Youth Future Flight Challenge, hosted by the Women of the Aerospace Industry Association of Michigan (WAIAM), gives students the chance to apply classroom learning to a real-world aerospace problem.

Securly Parent Portal - How to Opt In
In the AAPS, we utilize a cloud-based web filter called Securly to keep students safe on their district-issued device. To help parents monitor their child's online activity at home, AAPS offers the free Securly Home app. This application allows web-based filtering and parental controls on district-issued devices at home. Parents may set rules to allow or disallow certain websites, pause the internet connection to the device as desired, and receive weekly usage reports. To OPT-IN to the Securly Parent Portal service, please encourage families to use the pathway as outlined below:
STEP #1: Read about the AAPS Securly - 25-26 Parent Portal Opt-In opportunity available to all families.
STEP #2: Sign-up on the Securly Parent Portal Program Form.
STEP #3: Look for an email from Securly when your account is ready to go (it can take up to 48 hours to receive).
STEP #4: Download the Securly Home App from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
STEP #5: Navigate the App to explore different views into your child's online safety and check out the AAPS Securly Parent Portal FAQs.
If families have any questions, they can always reach out to the Student & Family Help Desk at 734-997-1222.
Some Friendly Reminders
School Safety
A safe learning environment for all students is the top priority of the Ann Arbor Public Schools. A change in state law over the summer has led to a change in one of the terms used in our Crisis Response Protocol. We will now use the phrase Secure when there is a possible threat outside, but normal school activities can continue inside the building, for example if there is a bank robbery in the area. While the name has changed from Shelter to comply with state law, the reasons why it would be used and the actions taken by staff and students remain the same. If you want a reminder or don’t know the Standard Response Protocol now being used across Michigan, this video from the I Love U Guys Foundation highlights the actions students will take in each situation
