Kiesha Carroll- Moreland Elementary

Even the Youngest Students Can Learn Using G Suite Tools

“Google Suite is revolutionizing the way I teach,” according to Kiesha Carroll, a fourth grade teacher a Moreland Elementary. When she first started teaching seven years ago, her students loved using the educational apps on iPads to reinforce skills. “Now, fast-forward to today, and every student in my classroom has a Chromebook in hand,” she said.

Carroll taught first grade for the first time last year. “I taught my ‘firsties’ to use their Chromebooks and navigate through parts of the Google Suite,” she explained. “That was an adventure! Being more tech-savvy than me, they were up to the challenge.”

“I was amazed at how fast my 6- and 7-year-old students were able to move about in our Google Classroom. They quickly learned to navigate the assignment stream where I posted assignments, shared educational games, and linked instructional videos and research sites,” she said.

Using Chromebooks, her first graders learned how to research animals, and then word processed informational paragraphs in Google Docs. Carroll also taught them how to insert images of their animals into their documents. “Finally, the students emailed their final writing projects to me through Gmail,” she stated. “The process required patience and direct instruction in the first few weeks of the school year, but investing that time up front set our class up for success for the remainder of the school year.”

This year, Carroll is teaching fourth grade and continues to use the Google Suite to make learning engaging and accessible. “Using Google Classroom, my fourth graders conduct research using the electronic classroom materials and links to research sites,” she said.

“Another feature I love is creating assessments in Google Forms and adding them to my Google Classroom. Using these two technology tools, not only am I able to grade over 40 papers at once, but students are also able to receive immediate feedback.”

Carroll likes the way Google Forms helps her with data-driven instruction. “Google Forms also gives me instant data analysis on each item, so I can easily see where I need to offer small group or one-to-one remediation, revise my large group instruction, or improve the assessment question,” she said.

Student collaboration is the next aspect of Google Apps for Education that Carroll plans to implement in her classroom. “As I look ahead, I am excited to teach my students how to share and edit projects using Google Slides,” she stated, “then they can create presentations together later this year. Google is making it all possible, and I'm excited for what the future holds for our students!”
