Celebrating Women’s History Month: Honoring the Women Who Inspire Us
As we step into March, we proudly recognize Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the remarkable contributions of women throughout history and in our own community. This month provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the trailblazers who have shaped our world and to honor the women around us who continue to make a difference every day.
Two particularly significant dates this month stand out as we commemorate the courage, leadership, and resilience of women:
- March 8th – International Women’s Day: A global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward gender equality and the importance of uplifting the voices of women in every space.
- March 10th – Harriet Tubman Day: Honoring one of the most courageous leaders in American history, Harriet Tubman, whose bravery and determination helped guide enslaved individuals to freedom. Her legacy continues to inspire generations to stand for justice, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to doing what is right.
At Wilson Elementary School District, we are fortunate to have many outstanding women in our community who embody these values of leadership, service, and dedication. This month, I would like to take a moment to highlight one of our own – Mariana Melendrez.
Mariana’s hard work and dedication shine every day, not only through her exceptional customer service but also in her willingness to go above and beyond to support our students and staff. Her positive attitude and commitment to excellence are felt throughout our district, and her eagerness to volunteer at afterschool events truly exemplifies her dedication to the Wilson community. Mariana, we appreciate you and all that you do!
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I encourage everyone to take the time to recognize and appreciate the women who inspire us—whether they are historical icons, educators, colleagues, family members, or friends. Thank you to all the incredible women in our district who help make Wilson a place of learning, growth, and community.
With appreciation,
Ernest Rose

Happy March! Last month, we had an honor of having Ms. Polet Aguilar represent our school in Washing D.C. to speak about the Super Why Kindergarten Readiness Summer Program. We were fortunate enough to partner with ASU/PBS to provide the funding and resources to implement this program to our youngest learners for the last 3 years. Here are a few words from Ms. Aguilar herself regarding her experience in Washington D.C.:
My Washington D.C. Experience
From Phoenix to Washington D.C., I had the privilege of advocating for the resources our students deserve. I’m grateful to PBS for this opportunity and to our district for allowing me to represent our community. Meeting with the offices of Arizona’s representatives and senators in the halls of Capitol Hill was a powerful experience. One of the highlights was reconnecting with a former teacher from our College Prep Academy, who now works for one of our Arizona representatives. Seeing someone from our district in such an impactful role was truly inspiring. This experience reminded me of the importance of advocacy and the hope that one day, our students will have the chance to make their voices heard in these same halls.
Fun Fact: Senator Kelly, who as you know was a former astronaut, has his spacesuit displayed outside his office. After his election to the U.S. Senate, he arranged for his NASA spacesuit to be exhibited there, serving as a symbol of his unique and inspiring journey.
Thank you, Ms. Aguilar, for putting us on the map and sharing the great work that we are doing at Wilson! WE truly appreciate your commitment to our students and families.
We are gearing up for another summer of the Super Why Kinder Readiness Summer Program. Keep your eyes for an announcement this spring.

Wilson Elementary School
Spring is here, bringing a fresh wave of excitement and activities to our school community! At Wilson Elementary School, we are working on enhancing our school spirit and climate by providing opportunities for our students to demonstrate their skills and talents.
Our Student Council Officers have been doing a wonderful job leading spirit week, organizing assembly games, and serving as the voice of the student body. They have also participated in high school visits for our 8th graders, giving them a chance to explore future opportunities. By shadowing high school students in their classes, they have experienced firsthand what high school life will be like in just a few months.
In today’s digital world, technology literacy is more important than ever. Our school is committed to helping students develop essential skills in digital creativity, digital safety, and responsible technology use.
With support from the Community Center staff, our students now have access to several classes where they learn these skills both during and after school. Through collaboration and problem-solving, students are gaining valuable knowledge in technology literacy by creating innovative projects.
Recently, students in the AV and art classes took a trip to the Desert Botanical Garden, where they applied their digital skills by capturing photos and videos of desert life. They will use these experiences to create art pieces in their classes, showcasing their creativity and technical skills.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Wishing everyone a fantastic month ahead!

Spotlight on Women Activists: Malala Yousafzai
This month, we proudly honor Malala Yousafzai, a symbol of courage and resilience in the fight for girls’ education. Born in Mingora, Pakistan, Malala’s passion for learning was evident from a young age. When the Taliban took control of her hometown, they banned girls from attending school. Unwilling to accept this injustice, Malala began speaking out publicly, advocating for girls' right to education.
In 2009, at just 11 years old, Malala wrote an anonymous diary for the BBC, detailing life under the Taliban and the challenges faced by young girls yearning to learn. Her voice resonated globally, but this activism made her a target. In 2012, Malala survived a brutal assassination attempt by the Taliban, an attack meant to silence her advocacy. Instead, it amplified her voice worldwide.
After her recovery, Malala co-founded the Malala Fund to champion education for girls globally. The fund supports local educators and advocates policy changes to ensure every girl has access to 12 years of free, safe, and quality education. Her relentless dedication earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, making her the youngest laureate in history at just 17.
“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” – Malala Yousafzai
Today, Malala continues to inspire millions as a human rights advocate and author. Her story is a powerful reminder that no voice is too small to make a difference. Let her legacy inspire us to support education and equality in our own community.

Women have been making significant strides in the construction industry, a field traditionally dominated by men. As of 2023, women constitute approximately 10.8% of the construction workforce in the United States. This marks a notable increase over the past decade, with about 1.3 million women employed in various construction roles in 2022, reflecting a 53% rise during that period. Organizations like the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), established in 1953, have been instrumental in supporting and empowering women in the industry. NAWIC offers networking opportunities, professional education, and mentorship programs to help women advance in their construction careers. The increasing presence of women in construction not only enriches the industry with diverse perspectives but also helps address labor shortages by tapping into a broader talent pool. As the sector continues to evolve, the contributions of women are proving essential in building a more inclusive and robust construction workforce.
