Why cite?

According to Minnesota State University at Mankato, citing resources is "an essential part of using information ethically and responsibly." Consider the following reasons why citing your resources is non-negotiable:

  • Give credit where credit is due - Avoid stealing or plagiarizing someone else's ideas, information, or words.
  • Build your credibility - Support your argument and sound more knowledgeable with reliable, relevant research.
  • Help others continue to learn - Encourage your audience to find out more information by telling them where to look.

3 Ways to Cite

There are 3 ways to cite a source:

  1. Summarize - brief description of an idea
  2. Paraphrase - restatement of an idea using your own words
  3. Quote - exact words enclosed by quotation marks; no more than 10% of your paper should include quotes

References/Works Cited Page

Most online citation makers will also help you create a References page (usually used with APA) or a Works Cited page (usually used with MLA). If you chose to create your References/Works Cited page manually, use the following guidelines:

  • Alphabetize your entire list of resources.
  • Every line after the first line of a citation should be indented 5 spaces.
  • Double-space between resources.
