There really is something special about high school sports because they go beyond just competition — they help shape personal growth, community, and school spirit. The IHSAA promotes this in everything they do ... but as fans, we just love cheering on our Brickies ... and of course eating the best - I SAY THE BEST - hot dogs in Northwest Indiana!! :)
Our kids and coaches have put in a lot of WORK WORK WORK over the summer to be successful, which means they brought ENERGY & worked hard every day ... they made SACRIFICES to become their best and help others do the same ... and always had mission, purpose & DIRECTION to help take them from where they were to where they want to go!
This past week alone we saw EVERY FALL SPORT compete! If you didn't make it out to a contest yet, GO and CHEER our kids to VICTORY!! You won't regret it :)
What time is it? It's time for BricksCenter!

HOBART MOOSE BINGO TO SUPPORT BRICKIE ATHLETICS!!
Girls Volleyball
After an encouraging showing at the pre-season scrimmage against Morgan Township, this past week was the REAL THING as Hobart raced full-speed-ahead into the season with back-to-back contests against Duneland Athletic Conference opponents and then hosted the 47th Annual Hobart Invite on Saturday! LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO!!
On Monday, Hobart traveled to square off with area powerhouse Valparaiso. One of NWI's top teams, the Lady Vikes return some outstanding outside hitters that were firing lasers over the net all night. Hobart also begins this season with a lot of returning experience and our girls BATTLED Valpo HARD!! Our girls scored the first point of the match, but the hosts rattled off 8 straight before the Brickies scored again to make it 2-8. The two squads played relatively even volleyball the rest of the first set that the Vikings won 15-25. In the 2nd set, the score was tied 5-5 early on, but once again, the Vikings were able to put together a run to seize control and ultimately win 12-25. In the 3rd and final set, Valpo had too much firepower and won 9-25. Juniors Cadence Costello & Alissa Hope each recorded 4 kills ... senior Kalli Butcher finished with a team-high 7 assists ... and classmate Maddie Lams had 9 digs and returned a team-high 26 serves in the loss.
Tuesday, the Lady Brickies were on the road again ... this time just across county line to face Portage. Every time these two teams get together, it's close - and Tuesday was no different. In an exciting first game, the Indians held off the Bricks 25-22 to take an early 1-0 lead. Hobart battled back in the 2nd game and tied things up at 1-1 with a 25-17 victory! In the pivotal 3rd game, Portage got up 21-14, but our girls rallied all the way back to 23-22 before the hosts scored the final two points to win 25-22. Set #4 was close early on with the Indians clinging to a 6-5 advantage, but then they rattled off 15 consecutive points to close the door on any more Brickie comebacks ...winning the final game 25-11 to secure a 3-1 win. Hope finished with 8 kills to go along with her 5 total blocks ... Costello and senior Lena Raygoza added 5 & 4 kills each ... Butcher tallied 13 assists ... Lams recorded a team-high 12 digs and senior Riley Weber had 10 in the loss.
On Saturday, Hobart finished off the 1st week of competition for the 2025 season by hosting the 47th Annual Hobart Volleyball Invitational ...a tournament won by the Brickies each of the last two years! The Invite consisted of 8 schools divided into two divisions for pool play. The teams with the best records from each pool went at it for the 'Ship!
Well, our Brickies looked GOOD through the opening rounds ... going 3-0 in pool play with straight set victories over Lake Station, Hammond Morton and Calumet!!
For the 'Ship, Hobart matched up with our Porter County neighbor Wheeler for the 2nd concecutive year. The visiting Bearcats took the first set 25-22, but our girls ROARED BACK to WIN the 2nd set 26-24 and set up a WINNER-TAKE-ALL 3rd & final set to determine the overall champion! Just like the previous two, the final set went back-and-forth with each team making plays!! With the score knotted at 14-14, Wheeler was able to score the final two points to win the title. Believe it or not, a year ago, the score was knotted at 13-13 and it was the Brickies who scored the final two points. That's how it goes sometimes. It was a tough end to a long day of competition, but our girls FOUGHT HARD and made us PROUD!
The Bricks are an even 3-3 on the season and showing signs of improvement! They will host Munster & River Forest on Tuesday & Wednesday before traveling to Lowell on Thursday this week - GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

Friday night on Don Howell Field @ The Brickyard, the preseason #5-ranked Brickies squared off against the #6-ranked Chesterton Trojans in a BATTLE between the NCC and the DAC!
After trading punts to open the contest, the Brickies methodically drove the ball down field on their second possession ... converting on 3rd & 4th downs to keep the drive going ... and punched it across the goal line when junior quarterback Alex Tatum powered in from 1-yard out!! A failed 2-point conversion by the Bricks left the score at 6-0. The visiting Trojans got a long return on the ensuing kickoff, which put them in field goal range. When their drive stalled inside Hobart territory, their 25-yard FG attempt sailed through the uprights to make a 6-3 ballgame early in the 2nd quarter.
Over the next few minutes, the Brickie offense once again marched down the field and SCORED on a pass from Tatum to classmate Bryce Tolliver, who danced into the endzone from 15-yards out!! When junior kicker Peter Janda sent the point after over the crossbar, it was 13-3 Brickies!!
Hobart's D-D-D-DEFENSE was TOUGH and backed the Trojans near the goal line. When Chesterton tried to punt it away on 4th down late in the first half, senior Logan Peters buried the punter and recovered the fumble in the endzone for another BRICKIE TOUCHDOWN!!! As the two teams headed into the locker rooms, the scoreboard showed a commanding 20-3 lead for Hobart!
Over the final 24 minutes of play, our boys really clamped down on D-D-D-DEFENSE to limit an hopes for a Trojan comeback ... completely shutting down the visitors and not allowing a score! The Brickie offense was able to move the ball, but could not add another score before the clock struck zero - fortunately none were needed as our boys earned a hard fought 20-3 VICTORY!!!
Tatum completed 13 of 19 passes for 165 yards and a TD to go along with 9 carries for another 65 yds and a score. Senior tailback Max Pickett tallied 18 rushes for a team-best 68 yards ... Tolliver hauled in 7 passes for 68 yards and a TD and junior Nathan Sobczynski finished with 3 catches for 80 yards in the win!
For the Brickie D, junior Vontrell Jones and sophomore Terry Earvin each recorded 10 total tackles ... junior Stephen Miller added 7 and senior Josh Diaz finished with 6! In addition to Logan Peters causing a fumble and recovering it for the score, sophomore Miles White also caused a Trojan fumble and recovered it!
Hobart is now 1-0 on the year and will travel across County Line Rd on Friday to face the Portage Indians for the first time since 2004! GO GET 'EM GUYS!!!

Girls Golf
FOOOOOORRRRE!
The Lady Brickies were the first Hobart sport to compete this fall when they hosted the 19th Annual Hobart Invite at River Pointe Country Club on August 5th. Against the 7-team field, our girls collectively shot a 38 ... 5 strokes better than a year ago ... and tied for FIRST PLACE in the 9-hole scramble! Unfortunately, Bishop Noll won the tie-breaker based on comparable scores on the most difficult hole played, so the Warriors took home the championship plaque. Still, this was the BEST (... I say THE BEST) showing for the Bricks in the last decade!! Competing for the Brickies were seniors Lily Ullrich, Alexis Rachau & Olivia Postma, junior Makenzie Johnston, and sophomore Belle Zabrecky.
Bishop Noll has now won back-to-back Hobart Invite titles.
After nearly a week of practice where our girls got some WORK WORK WORK done, Hobart was back at it on Monday, August 11th, with a non-conference opener against the Portage Indians. A year ago, Portage bested our girls 226-260. This year, it was ALL BRICKIES!!!! Hobart dropped 30 STROKES from last Fall to shoot a team score of 230 and defeat the Indians by 7 strokes (230-237)!! WOW!!! Ullrich led the way with a team-best score of 50 with Johnston (54), Zabrecky (56) and Postma (70) rounding out the varsity scores!!
On Friday, August 15th, the Brickies were at River Pointe for the Northwest Crossroads Conference opener against powerhouse Kankakee Valley. After picking up the "W" against Portage with a terrific team score of 230, our girls were even better against the Kougars! Hobart traversed the course in just 218 strokes (...only 2 shy of their team goal of 216) - HOLY COW THAT'S A GREAT SCORE!! Freshman newcomer Corrine Oswald earned medalist honors for the Bricks with a 48 in her first ever varsity match - including a par on hole #1! Backing her up were Ullrich (52), Johnston (56) and junior Marisa Salamanca (62)! Unfortunately, KV was also firing on all cylinders and needed just 195 strokes to earn the win.
For some perspective, our Brickies closed the gap on KV by 53 strokes compared to last year! UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Three more meets dotted the golfing landscape this past week! :)
On Monday, the Brickies traveled to Valparaiso to face both the host Vikings and the Highland Trojans in a double-dual match @ Forest Park Golf Course. Valparaiso looked strong on their home course in firing a team score of 184 to pick up the victory. Hobart was next into the clubhouse with another fantastic score of 222 ... defeating Highland by 32 strokes (222-254)!! YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOOOOOAAARRD ... YESSS!!! The top scorers for the Bricks were Oswald (50), Ullrich & Zabrecky (56) and Johnston (60)!
On Wednesday, the destination was Wicker Park to face the Highland Trojans for the 2nd time in 3 days. The host Trojans improved their score from Monday by 17 strokes to sign their card with a team total of 237. Fortunately, our Brickies hit just enough fairways and made just enough puts to hold them off and earn a close 231-237 CONFERENCE VICTORY!!! Ullrich showed her senior experience with a team-best 50 and had Oswald, Salamanca & Johnston backing her up in the win!
Friday afternoon featured another key NCC matchup ... this time against the Andrean 59ers. Our girls showed consistency once again with a team score of 230! Lily Ullrich, Makenzie Johnston and junior Sidney Kemp all made pars with Ullrich once again earning medalist honors with a team-best 51 ... and Johnston even scored a birdie!! Once the scorecards were turned it, they added up to ANOTHER BRICKIE VICTORY!!! Our girls outdistanced Andrean 230-247 and earned our first W over the '9ers since 2019!! WOW!!
Unfortunately, the '9ers navigated the 9-hole course with a 208 and left town with a victory. Ullrich led the way for Hobart with a team-best 59 in the loss.
Hobart is currently 4-2 on the year and off to a 2-1 start in NCC play!! Our girls will be back in action three times over the next 5 days. LET'S GOOOOOOOO! YOU CAN DO THIS LADIES!!

GOOOOAAAAAAAAALL for the Brickies!
Girls
On Tuesday, the wheels on the Brickie bus went 'round & 'round to Munster for a critical Northwest Crossroads Conference game! Play went back-and-forth ... literally ... for the entire first half as each team worked hard to gain control. The host Mustangs scored first, but Hobart countered with a GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALL by junior Kurah Krucina and the halftime scoreboard showed a 1-1 tie. In spite of a tremendous effort given by our girls over the final 40 minutes, Munster netted 3 more scores and held the Bricks scoreless for a 4-1 win.
On Saturday, the Brickies were on the road at Boone Grove for an afternoon contest against the Wolves in non-conference action. Krucina got the Bricks on the board with a free kick GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAALLL in the first half!! After the halftime break, junior Addy Hendricks (assisted by sophomore Val Rodriguez) and freshman Brooklyn Reichert (assisted by Krucina) each sent shots that hit NOTHING but the back of the net to give Hobart a 3-0 advantage that our girls held until the final buzzer sounded!!!
The Brickies are an even 1-1 so far and FUN to watch! Our girls will host Michigan City on Wednesday and then travel to battle Illiana Christian on Saturday. GO GET 'EM GIRLS!!
Boys
Hobart opened up the 2025 campaign right here at The Brickyard against NCC favorite Munster. Play throughout the contest between these two rivals was INTENSE!! The 'Stangs got on the board first with a goal 15 minutes into the game, but the Brickies responded when senior Cooper Evans served up an assist to junior Spencer Provins for a GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALL and a 1-1 tie ballgame!! Munster was able to regain the lead with about 6 minutes left in the first half and took a 2-1 advantage into the break. In the second 40 minutes of play, Hobart got a GOOOOOOOOOAAAALL from junior Lincoln Miller (assisted by senior Daniel Taiwo), but it wasn't enough as the visitors put 4 in the back of the net to leave town with a 6-2 win. This one was much closer than the final score might indicate and our boys know they can compete with anyone around. Sophomore Michael Klaich finished with 6 saves protecting the goal.
On Saturday, the Brickies hosted future ('26-27) NCC foe Illiana Christian, the second straight top 10 foe to start the season. In another intense contest, some outstanding D-D-D-DEFENSE was on display as both teams protected the net extremely well!! After 40 minutes, the scoreboard remained 0-0. In the 2nd half, the Vikings were finally able to break through the TOUGH Brickie D and find the back of the net ...scoring 3 goals over the first 15 minutes of the half. Hobart responded well with a GOOOOOOOOOOAAALL from junior Cam Guess (assisted by classmate Gio Alvarado) to cut the deficit to 3-1! Unfortunately, that's as close as our boys would get as each team would add another score before the final horn sounded and Illiana left town with a 4-2 win. Senior Cooper Evans netted the other Hobart goal on a penalty kick and Klaich finished the day in goal with 10 saves.
The Bricks are 0-2 so far on the young season, but getting better each time out. These kids can play ... and the GOAL is to always keep improving! Hobart will host Hammond Central on Tuesday @ The Brickyard before traveling to Morgan Township on Saturday. DON'T STOP NOW BOYS - YOU'VE GOT THIS!

THANK YOU Barb Tinoco for these GREAT PHOTOS of our girls!

Anyone for tennis?
The Brickies have been WORK WORK WORKing hard to prepare for the Fall season! Our boys return as seasoned group of players that contributed to our 2024 IHSAA Sectional title! Could the Bricks run it back in 2025?
Hobart opened the 2025 season at home vs. Portage on Tuesday ... and our boys SHINED! The Brickies BATTLED HARD throughout and ... get your brooms out because they earned a 5-0 SWEEP of the Indians!! Senior Gabe Gutierrez & classmate Cash Salunga each won in straight sets at #1 and #2 singles!! Sophomore Mav Becerra matched them with a straight set win @ #3 singles and the team of senior Jayden Standish & junior Teddy Ho did the same @ #2 doubles to put the Brickies in front 4-0! Juniors Angel Gomez & Mason Mitchell WORK WORK WORKed HARD @ #1 doubles after dropping the first set 5-7 to rally and win the next two 6-1, 11-9 to seal the deal!! WHAT AN OPENER FOR THE BRICKIES!!!
On Wednesday, our boys were scheduled to host River Forest, but due to a special request from the Ingots ... this one was postponed until September 10th.
The Brickies are currently UNDEFEATED at 1-0 on the young season and will have 3 matches over the next 4 days ... @ Lake Station, vs. Griffith and @ Kankakee Valley! GOOD LUCK BOYS!!

The Brickie harriers traveled to a destination this past Tuesday that can only be described as Pure Michigan :). In fact, both the boys & girls teams were competitors in the St. Joe Invite held at Riverview Park in St. Joseph, MI! On a that Coach A described as "Ideal Conditions", our kids SHINED BRIGHT!!
For the Girls, senior Cassie Cohen & sophomore Lilliana Lopez each placed in the top 20 with seniors Audrey Turley & Millie Massey ...along with another sophomore, Sydney Reyes ... rounding out the top 5 finishers for Hobart! With over 100 competitors traversing the course that runs along the St. Joseph River, the Bricks ran really well and saw PERSONAL BEST performances from a strong sophomore contingent composed of Lilliana Lopez, Sydney Reyes, Khloe Reyes and Krystiana Montejano as well as freshman Corabella Wesley!!
On the Boys side, Hobart's top 5 finishers were seniors Lu Cohen, Durgon Click & newcomer Mason Thorpe as well as juniors Nolan Shaginaw & Jerry Theodorakos! Against a field including 93 competitors, the Brickie Boyz also saw some PRs from Jerry, Mason and sophomore Landon Neace!
On Saturday morning, Hobart competed in the Larry James Invitational hosted by Chesterton High School and held at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. Named in honor of longtime coach Larry James, the host Trojans placed 1st in the boys race and Lake Central finished 1st for the girls. As for the Brickies, they had some STRONG performances from both the boys and girls teams! Lopez was the top placer for our girls crossing the finish line in 41st and senior Aalliah Otero was right behind her in 51st to help our girls place 8th as a team.
For the boys, Cohen was once again leading the pack o' Brickies as he finished in 44th overall ... Shaginaw was next in 55th and Theodorakos placed 60th. Rounding out the top 5 for Hobart were sophomore Landon Neace (62nd) and junior Jayden Cooper (66th). The Brickies finished 9th overall in the team standings against a stacked field.
The Brickies will venture to Michigan on Wednesday to compete in the New Buffalo High School Invitational. Should be a pretty cool experience for all involved! As former Hobart Cross Country coach Steve Schwanke used to say, "Hurry Back!" :)
