Dear Davis Families,

The new school year is off to a fantastic start! It's wonderful to see our students settling into their new routines, growing more confident each day, and forming new friendships throughout our school.

This week, our first through fifth grade students began taking the iReady diagnostic assessments in both reading and math. This tool helps our teachers understand what each student already knows well, where they're ready for new challenges, and where they might benefit from additional support. Please remember that this is just one of many ways we assess learning - our teachers use a variety of methods to understand and support the whole child.

We anticipate completing all assessments by next week, and our kindergarten students will begin their diagnostics the week of September 2nd. Once complete, you'll be able to access your child's progress through the iReady parent portal using the directions provided below.

i-Ready Fall Results Letter

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to support your child's growth and learning.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Understanding Davis BEST: Building Positive Behaviors Together

We're excited to share information about Davis BEST, our school-wide approach to teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors throughout our building. At Davis Elementary, we believe that explicitly teaching behavioral expectations helps create a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all our Davis Dragons.

What is Davis BEST?

Davis BEST is our comprehensive behavior matrix that outlines clear expectations for student behavior in every area of our school. We teach and reteach these expected behaviors throughout the year, with special emphasis at the beginning of the school year. However, we continue to revisit and reinforce these expectations regularly to ensure all students understand what it means to be their Davis BEST.

We're sharing our Davis BEST Matrix with you so you can see exactly what teachers have been working on with students. This gives you the opportunity to understand and reinforce these same positive behaviors at home, creating consistency between school and home environments.

Celebrating Our Davis Dragons

We love celebrating when our students demonstrate expected behaviors! Here are the three ways we recognize and reinforce positive choices:

1. Dragon Tails (Class Recognition)

When an entire class demonstrates excellent behavior—such as showing "Hallway BEST"—staff members can reward the class with a Dragon Tail. Once a class earns 10 Dragon Tails, they receive a Dragon Scale and get to celebrate with a special dragon party. These celebrations might include:

  • PJ Day
  • Extra recess
  • Bring a stuffed animal to school
  • Other fun, no-cost activities chosen by the class

The class also gets to add a scale to our Davis the Dragon display, showing their achievement for the whole school to see!

2. Dragon Dollars (Individual Recognition)

Students can earn individual Dragon Dollars when they show expected behaviors throughout their day. These dollars give students choices in how they want to celebrate their positive choices—they might purchase an experience like sitting at the VIP table during lunch or select a small item like an eraser. The choice is theirs!

3. Golden Dragon Award (Monthly Recognition)

Each month, our Davis staff nominates students who have gone above and beyond by being exceptional friends and showing outstanding helpfulness. Teachers select two students per grade level each month to receive our Golden Dragon Award. These special students have their names announced during morning announcements, receive a medal and certificate, and are featured in our school newsletter.

Your Support Matters

Your children have been doing a wonderful job demonstrating their Davis BEST, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate their success throughout the year. By understanding these expectations and reinforcing them at home, you're helping create the positive, supportive community that makes Davis Elementary such a special place to learn and grow.

Thank you for your partnership in helping our Davis Dragons soar!

i-Ready

Students in grades 1-5 have been taking their fall i-Ready test starting this past week. (Kindergarten will take place Sept 2-6.) Make-ups for grades 1-5 will start the week of August 25th. Teachers will use this information to help plan for interventions this fall. The diagnostic assessment sets the personalized online instruction for each student to start the year and readjust during the year. Teachers monitor student pathways with check-ins and ability to make adjustments. Please click HERE for more details.

Attendance

District 303 attendance procedures were updated and approved at the June 9, 2025, Board Meeting. All district procedures are available in the CUSD 303 Student Handbook found in the Parent/Community tab in the Information column of the district303.org website.

Updates to the attendance procedures were made to bring consistency across all schools within the district and to clarify student attendance expectations. One example of an update is the removal of the pre-arranged absence procedure. This aligns with the definitions of excused and unexcused absences found in Section 2.2.

Families are encouraged to review the CUSD 303 Student Handbook to familiarize themselves with the districtwide procedures.
