SCIENCE COMES TO LIFE AT GOLD RUSH
One of the things our students love most about learning science is seeing concepts come to life through hands-on experiences. This excitement is evident throughout Gold Rush, where engaging science experiments are happening every day across all grade levels.
All students use the STEMscopes curriculum to study their grade-level science standards. This curriculum is built on the 5E Model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—which encourages students to investigate key concepts deeply and meaningfully. Experiments and real-world applications are an essential part of the Explore phase and are often students’ favorite part of the learning process.
In fifth grade, students rotate through Life, Physical, and Earth science units. They explore a wide range of topics, such as how air and water support plant growth and the different patterns created by Earth’s orbit. Students brought these concepts to life by observing how different types of seeds grow using water, air, and sunlight only. Students also explored mixtures and solutions as they conducted an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances resulted in a new substance. Students noted that a chemical reaction occurred when a substance emerged with different properties when mixed.
In fourth grade, students recently completed a unit on renewable and nonrenewable resources. Through a safe and guided experiment led by astronomer Mr. Jung, students observed the Sun up close and deepened their understanding of solar energy as a powerful renewable resource we can rely on again and again. Using solar scopes, students were able to view incredible features such as solar prominences and sunspots—an experience that was truly out of this world!
These are just two of many examples of how science comes alive at Gold Rush through hands-on, experiential learning. We are proud of our students’ curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm as they explore the world around them.
LEGEND'S WISH WEEK KICKS OFF MONDAY
We are excited to announce that Legend High School’s annual Wish Week kicks off Monday! This special week is dedicated to spreading joy, kindness, and generosity in support of a deserving student. Click here for more from Wish Week recipient Juliette! Juliette is an eleven year old student at Frontier Valley and part of our Legend Feeder!
There are many meaningful ways for our Gold Rush community to get involved and make a difference for Juliette and others. Below are the exciting events and opportunities happening during Wish Week.
PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT – January 31
Legend High School’s Student Government and staff are hosting a Parents’ Night Out on January 31 from 5:30–9:30 PM at Legend High School. Please see the additional information and registration link below to sign up.
GRE SPIRIT DAYS – February 2–6
Students who bring a daily donation are welcome to participate in GRE’s spirit days throughout the week. Juliette loves the ocean, so this year’s spirit days follow an ocean theme. Please see the flyer below for each day’s theme. All contributions, big or small, are welcome.
WISH WEEK T-SHIRT SALES – February 2–6
Wish Week t-shirts will be available for purchase before and after school from February 2–6 outside the main office doors. The cost: $25 per shirt.
Gold Rush students and staff will proudly present our school’s total contribution at the culminating Wish Week assembly next Friday. We are looking forward to coming together as a community to support this important cause and make a positive impact.
ART EXPLORATION
Students across several grade levels are currently exploring one of their favorite art mediums during rotation—clay! Creativity is on full display as students mold and sculpt clay into favorite animals, meaningful objects, and special legacy projects.
In third grade, students are creating animal pots and showcasing an impressive variety of animals, including geese, pandas, and many more. Each piece reflects students’ imagination and growing artistic skills.
Fourth graders are working on pinch pots, learning foundational hand-building techniques while putting their own creative spin on each design.
Fifth graders are creating their personalized clay tiles that represent who they are. As part of a cherished Gold Rush tradition, these tiles will be permanently displayed in the cafeteria, serving as a lasting marker of their time at our school.
It has been wonderful to see the excitement and pride students show as they mold, sculpt, and bring their ideas to life. A special thank you goes to our art teacher, Ms. Dazzio, for her continued inspiration, creativity, and support of our students.
We look forward to seeing these incredible works of art completed and displayed!
