Happy Friday Hawkins,

I am so happy with all of the wonderful things going on here at Hawkins. The effort led by Mrs. Beach, with Gleaners Food Bank has been phenomenal! It is our goal that no family goes without for the holiday season. Teachers have been hard at work as routines have been settled into and students are making so much progress. A huge thank you to all who came to conferences, this is such an important part of the educational process. Our crossing guard has been at her post now for 2 weeks and it seems to be working well. The crossing guard times are 8:15-8:45 in the morning and 3:45-4:15 in the afternoon.

At this week’s PTO meeting a vote was made to remove our current board members. Let me start by making sure you know this has NO EFFECT on any of the family assistance programs. At this time, we will start the process to elect a new board. Please see the information below for job descriptions and the process for moving forward. Those who know me know I am not a social media person. With that being said I want to caution you from believing everything you read. Myself and the staff at Hawkins always put students first, and strive to make your experience at Hawkins incredible. We will always have bumps in the road, but I hope you feel I am always approachable and willing to work through things with you. If you have questions about something you read, just ask. The PTO event planned for tonight has been cancelled. If you have paid for this event I am more than happy to work to get you your money back, I am just waiting for a list of who those families are. If you paid and want to reach out to me I am fine with that. Looking forward, we have our Brighton Band coming on November 24th to do a performance for the students. This will be an outside event, I will send a reminder when we get close so that students can dress appropriately. We just received the information for the Brighton Ford Toys for Tots Campaign. We will be collecting toys from 11/10-12/4. Toys can be sent into school with your child, or dropped off at the main entrance to Hawkins. Look for a Toys for Tots box or they can be dropped with Officer Roy. The actual event at Brighton Ford will be December 4th from 6-8 pm. For more information, please see the flyer below. I will be thinking up a fun incentive to help motivate the students.

Today we celebrated with our students who ran a ½ marathon during our running club. They enjoyed a pizza lunch and were presented with a certificate. Thanks so much to all of the parents who made this possible, and especially Molly Jourdan and Lisa Piegdon who led the charge. We will also be running our Holiday Shop again this year to help students get gifts for their families. We will be offering during school and after school opportunities for that. Hawkins is a wonderful place with an amazing staff. As we step into the holiday season, I want to celebrate all the good that is going on here. It is so easy to get pulled into the negative, Lets not let that happen. Together we can make this the best year ever for our Hawkins Community.

Mr. McAuliffe

Note On Attendance Note On Attendance

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

We believe that regular attendance and punctuality are fundamental to your child's academic success. Consistent classroom presence allows students to fully engage in our curriculum and build strong relationships with their peers and teachers.

Attendance:

  • Monitoring Absences: We closely monitor student attendance and will reach out to families once a student is out 10% of the year so far.

  • Support and Assistance: If there are factors preventing your child from attending school regularly, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are here to offer support and explore potential solutions.

Punctuality:

  • Prompt Start and End Times: School begins at 9:05 AM and ends at 3:58 PM.

  • Importance of Timeliness: Arriving on time and staying for the entire school day ensures that your child doesn't miss out on important instruction and activities.

By prioritizing attendance and punctuality, we can create a positive and supportive learning environment for all students. Thank you for your continued partnership in helping your child achieve their academic goals.

We are currently just over halfway through the 1st trimester of school. Excessive Absences = 10% or more of the marking period. The section on Attendance (taken from the Student Handbook) is pictured below. Medically excused absences do not count against your student's attendance, so send in those doctor's notes if you have them. If you have any questions regarding your students attendance, feel free to contact Judy Samanich via email at samanij@brightonk12.com

Free and Reduced Lunch Free and Reduced Lunch

Dear Parents,

We’d like to share some important information about Free & Reduced-Price Meal eligibility.

While all students currently receive meals at no cost through the Michigan School Meals Program, qualifying for Free or Reduced-Price Meals can provide additional benefits for your child and family—including reduced fees for school activities, athletics, and testing.

In past years, most students’ eligibility was determined through a process called Direct Certification. This automatically qualifies students without the need for families to apply. However, this year Direct Certification has not identified as many eligible students as in the past.

If your child has qualified for Free or Reduced-Price Meals in previous years but you have not received a notification this year, you may need to complete a short application. Also, if you feel that you may now qualify, you should fill out this application as well (Link to Qualification Standards). The good news—it’s quick and simple to do!

  • Paper applications are available in all schools.

  • Applications can also be printed from the district website.

  • An online Application is available on Parent Connect

If you are unsure of your eligibility status or have any questions, please call the Food Service Office at 810-299-4175 and we’ll be happy to help.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to ensure your child receives all the benefits they are entitled to.

Sincerely,

The Brighton Area Schools Student Nutrition Department

NEWS FROM THE NURSE NEWS FROM THE NURSE

Parents, please remember to be checking your students head for head lice. After a long summer of sleep overs and interaction with friends, family and sporting events, it is that time of year again to be diligent about checking for lice and eggs . While they are not harmful they most certainly are a nuisance and difficult to get rid of. Should you need any more information here is a link for your reference: https://www.cdc.gov/lice/about/head-lice.html

A quick reminder about the board policy regarding medication: All medication including over-the-counter medication (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin, TUMS, cough drops, etc.) must have a MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION FORM. This form requires both the parent's and the medical provider's signature. Without both signatures, we cannot give medication to your student. Also, the school cannot provide this medication. You must supply this medication for your student. The clinic does not have extra. This comes from board policy found here: https://meetings.boardbook.org/Public/Organization/2615

Please make sure your child has an extra set of clothes in their backpack and/or locker in case of accidents or emergencies (i.e. bathroom accidents, playground mishaps, lunchroom spills, ripped or torn clothes, etc.). We do not have extra clothes to lend out. An extra set here at school saves parents an extra trip to Hawkins during the school day. We appreciate your help!!!
