A Note from Mrs. Meyers
Dear Hartwood Elementary Families,
Thank you all so much for making our HES Fun Run such an incredible success! Together, we raised $18,880 to support our school. It was wonderful running alongside the students and seeing so many families cheering everyone on. The energy and spirit were truly amazing.
As we look ahead, we have several exciting events coming up:
Parent-Teacher Conferences (October 19): We look forward to seeing you and sharing your child’s progress.
Trunk or Treat (October 23): Our next big PTA event! The PTA is currently accepting candy donations, which can be dropped off at the front office or near the library. Stay tuned for more details from the PTA soon.
Vocabulary Parade (October 30): We would love to see as many students participate as possible! You can find more detailed information further down in this newsletter.
Veterans Day Celebration (November 6): We look forward to celebrating and honoring our military connected students and families. Please be sure to RSVP using the link below.

CogAT for 2nd grade - Starting this week
Dear 2nd grade Parents and Guardians:
Between October 5th and October 30th, all Stafford County Elementary Public Schools will administer the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to all second-grade students. The information gathered will not be used in any calculation of report card grades. Your child’s classroom teacher will administer the CogAT in three one-hour sessions. To attain the most reliable results, we want to foster a relaxed, natural environment.
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple choice test that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. The data will be used to help the staff make instructional decisions regarding your child’s learning needs and to potentially identify students in need of gifted services. The results of this assessment will be provided to you within a few weeks after the process is complete.
For students with IEPs who are currently not participating in division-wide assessments, please contact your building designee should you decide you would like your child to participate. Any changes will require an amendment to the current IEP to address accommodations.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Meyers

Counselor's Corner
October is National Bullying Prevention month and our goal is to work together to stop bullying in our schools and communities. This month, our counseling lessons will introduce what makes a good friend. We will also define bullying and discuss situations to determine if it is bullying or not. This includes teaching/modeling what is rude, what is mean, and what is bullying.
Wednesday October 21, 2026 we will celebrate Unity Day. Please wear orange to send a visible message to prevent bullying.
As we get to know all our students, there may be needs that arise. Parents/Guardians please fill out this brief form to share with the counselors if there are specific needs for your child.

Vocabulary Parade
Get Ready for our Vocabulary Parade! A Guide For Hartwood Families!
When is it?
Friday Oct. 30th, 2026
What is it all about?
Vocabulary parades have become a popular event at schools around the country. They are a wonderful way to celebrate our love of words and reading. It also provides a fun and academic focus for dressing up in creative homemade costumes.
How do we get ready?
Plan: Think of a juicy word that would have an interesting costume design. Think about unusual words that others may not already know. Look at the lists of words sent home for ideas.
Create: You can recycle all sorts of items around your home to make a creative homemade costume: boxes, poster-boards, hats, paper bags, fabric, tin foil. You can also tie in a vocabulary word to your Halloween costume.
Make a Vocabulary Card/Label: remember to make a large card or sign with your vocabulary words on it, so we’ll know which word you represent in the parade. You can carry the word, make a headband or hat, or have it as part of your costume. Your word just needs to be visible somewhere on you!
Come Prepared: Bring your costume to school with you or wear it. Make sure you can put on the costume by yourself, and that you have all the parts.
For inspiration in creating your costume, there are lots of great ideas online! Check out ideas on Pinterest or Google.
