Thurgood Marshall Middle School Community Message
Dear Thurgood Marshall MS Families:
First, a huge THANK YOU to all of our TMMS staff members who worked tirelessly to make Spirit Week a tremendous success! Your creativity, energy, teamwork, and commitment to creating memorable experiences for our students truly exemplify what it means to be a part of the TMMS Tiger Family. A special shout-out to Ms. Taper, our PBIS Coordinator, for her outstanding leadership, planning, and dedication in bringing the vision of Spirit Week to life. Excellence Without Excuse. Work Hard. Play Hard. That's the TMMS Way!
Second, congratulations to the newly elected members of the Thurgood Marshall Middle School Student Government Association (SGA)! Your selection is a testament to your leadership potential, commitment, and willingness to be the voice and representatives of your fellow Tigers. We look forward to seeing you lead with integrity, demonstrate accountability, and make a positive difference in our school community. Lead with Pride, Serve with Purpose, and Always Be a TIGER!
Third, please mark your calendars for our upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with your child's teachers, discuss academic progress, and identify ways to support continued student growth and success. Additional information regarding the November 10th conferences will be shared through School Messenger during the week of November 2–6, 2026. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure every Tiger achieves excellence!
Fourth, as of Monday, October 5, 2026, all Thurgood Marshall Middle School students are expected to power off and store all cell phones and personal electronic devices in their assigned lockers for the entire school day. Students may not use devices for texting, calling, gaming, music, photography, video recording, or social media, and AirPods, earbuds, and headphones may not be worn in classrooms or hallways unless specifically authorized for instructional or testing purposes. All students have received a locker and are expected to follow these expectations each day. In addition, starting, Monday, October 19, 2026, any phones confiscated by security or administration, parents will need to call the front office and schedule a time to pick up their child's phone. Students/families consistently following the school-wide electronics policy will not be impacted.
Fifth, at Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) provides a proactive, schoolwide framework for explicitly teaching, reinforcing, and recognizing behaviors that support a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment. Tiger Bucks, in which students will be able to use at the P.B.I.S. School Store, will serve as a school-wide incentive system, allowing students to earn recognition for attendance, positive behavior, and academic achievement, reinforcing the TMMS I.C.A.R.E. values of Integrity, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.
Sixth, the school-wide reading initiative known as Reading in the Zone is off to a great start. All students and staff are required to have a book to read. The TMMS 30-minute “Reading in the Zone” block will provide students with consistent opportunities to build reading stamina, comprehension, and academic vocabulary through both free choice and content-based readings. Students may bring a book from home, select a book from their classroom library, or check out a book from the school library to enjoy during this dedicated reading time. Together, we can build a culture of reading and help our Tigers become stronger, more confident readers!
Seventh, during school spirit Friday's, students will be allowed to wear their favorite Team Jersey (e.g., American Football, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Thurgood Marshall MS Paraphernalia, etc.) over top of their grade-level polo shirt, every Friday, to promote school spirit. Students are still expected to wear their regular grade level uniform.
Eighth and finally, please review information in the Thurgood Marshall Middle School Information Center to receive important updates from Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS), Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS), and Prince George's County Government.

The Impact of Chronic Absenteeism and Truancy on Academic Progression and Student Retention at the Middle School Level
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Regular school attendance is essential to every student's academic success, social development, and overall educational experience. At Thurgood Marshall Middle School, we recognize that students must be present, engaged, and actively participating in instruction to master grade-level standards and demonstrate the academic growth necessary for promotion to the next grade. Chronic absenteeism and truancy can significantly interfere with a student's ability to meet these expectations and, over time, may contribute to a student being retained at the middle school level. Please read the TMMS attendance letter to parents/guardians regarding retention.

Keeping Our Focus on Teaching, Learning, and Student Success
At Thurgood Marshall Middle School, we are committed to creating a safe, focused, and productive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to Work Hard. Play Hard. In alignment with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) guidelines and Administrative Procedure 5132, students are expected to power off and properly store cell phones and personal electronic devices during the school day.
Also, starting, Monday, October 19, 2026, any phones confiscated by security or administration, parents will need to call the front office and schedule a time to pick up their child's phone. Students/families consistently following the school-wide electronics policy will not be impacted.

Being Chronically Present: Every Day. Every Class. Every Opportunity. At Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS), we are committed to addressing chronic absenteeism with urgency and purpose by identifying and removing attendance barriers that prevent students from being engaged and present every day, in every class, and for every opportunity to learn. During School Year 2025–2026, TMMS had a chronic absenteeism rate of 41%, meaning that 41% of students missed 10% or more of the school year. Our three-year goal is to reduce chronic absenteeism by 9 percentage points each year, decreasing the rate to 32% by the end of SY 2026–2027 school year. Students can achieve their attendance goal each marking period (Quarters 1–4) by missing no more than two days per quarter and no more than eight days throughout the school year. Students who earn perfect attendance each marking period will be recognized and celebrated for their commitment to being “Chronically Present: Every Day. Every Class. Every Opportunity.”
Once students reach the following attendance data points for the year, a formal letter will be generated and emailed to parents providing student attendance data and requesting a formal meeting with the grade level administrator, principal & State of MD Truancy Project Coordinator:
Quarter 1 - 4.5 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom)
Quarter 2 - 9.0 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom)
Quarter 3 - 13.5 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom)
Quarter 4 - 18 Days + Absent (Formal Letter to Families & Meeting Request In-Person or Via Zoom, and added to Tier 3 Attendance List for upcoming school year)
We ask all parents/guardians to partner with TMMS to make sure their student is “Chronically Present: Every Day. Every Class. Every Opportunity.”
